Sumner Special. Funeral services for Mrs. Louisa Luckfield, 79, who died at her Sumner home April 16 after a brief pneumonia illness, were held Sunday at the Evangelical church. Interment in Union Mound cemetery. Born in Germany, she married Fred Kuhlman in 1872 and had five children. The family moved to Iowa in 1884. husbands died in 1889 and 1916. She later married Charles Luckfield, who died ten months earlier. Survived by five children: Rev. H. W. Kuhlman of Caro, Herman Kuhlman, Mrs. Mary Linderman, Mrs. Elizabeth Reed of Weiser, Idaho, and Emma Kuhlman of Salem, Oregon.
The annual report for April 1 1930 to March 31 1931 shows Tripoli in good financial health with no bonded debt. Receipts totaled 16721.36 dollars, expenditures 9997.49, leaving 6723.87 on hand. The year’s balance exceeds the previous year by over two thousand dollars and includes payments on last bonded debt.
Miss Ruth Anderson of Cedar Falls was surprised with a party by the Christian Endeavor society at her Cedar Falls home east of town Saturday evening. About twenty guests attended with outdoor games planned, a weiner roast for refreshments but rain shifted to indoor games and refreshments. Miss Alene Murray of Cedar Falls also attended.
The Leader notes a fourth daughter born to the editor and his wife on Saturday night April 18. The baby weighs 8½ pounds and both mother and child are reported to be doing well. The note jokes about delaying publication if a boy had arrived and mentions future staff in a light tone.
Waterloo Police sought Lyle Cobb a 38 year old factory worker last seen Saturday night leaving his home at 512 Eleventh Street West to buy groceries. He is 5 feet 5 inches tall, wearing a brown suit with a blue shirt and brown raincoat, and drove a 1924 Hudson coach. Mr and Mrs Frank Koch were Waterloo callers.
In Des Moines the house rejected attaching an income tax to the millage bill by a 57 to 46 vote. The still unsettled fight featured fiery debate, party-line splits, and talk of a trade with the senate over road bond legislation. The millage bill passed 95 to 5, as senators blocked the enabling measure for the road bond issue.
Honors for the county baseball championship will be decided in Tripoli as Janesville Plainfield and Tripoli meet at the baseball park on Monday March 27 with first pitch at 2 PM. The winner advances to the district tournament later.
A reception was held Monday evening April 20 at 7 30 in the church basement by the Luther League to honor the year’s confirmation class. A short program preceded games and contests. A late lunch was served after tables were decorated in yellow and light green.
The Tripoli Fire Department awarded the bid to H. H. Buhr garage for a new fire truck with a partial trade in on a Chevrolet chassis. The unit includes hose ladders and chemical tanks. The chemical truck will serve rural calls while the main truck handles local emergencies, improving overall protection.
Des Moines reports by April 22 show rains and snows improving prospects for 1931 crops, though subsoil moisture remains below ideal. Federal statistician Leslie M. Carl notes normal rainfall could sustain growth. Northwest Iowa has improved after earlier dryness. Other towns describe recent rains lifting field conditions, spurring planting, hay, and pasture progress with corn sowing likely to begin around May 1 in many areas.
A. L. Jacobson, manager of the Tripoli Canning Company, said this week that the coming season's sweet corn acreage is fully subscribed. The plant plans to contract 500 acres but 550 have already been arranged. No additional acreage can be contracted. Sweet corn prices are attractive this year, with the local plant contracting all acreage at $9.00 per ton.
The senior class has selected The Devil's Scrapbook a comedy drama by Edward MacArthur. Rehearsals began Monday and the play will be staged May 15 at the Tripoli Opera House under Miss Beryl McCreery's direction.
St Pauls Lutheran pastor Rev E H Rausch receives a three month leave of absence, with Rev A G Weninger and Rev C Weltner covering duties. Rausch, a Mercy Hospital patient, recently underwent throat surgery. Also noted: Izaak Walton crow shoot captains Earl Duker and H B Yardho. Father Raymond Bohrer of Spillville has been appointed the new chaplain at St Joseph Mercy Hospital, adding spiritual leadership to the medical facility and serving patients and staff in the region.

Walter Mendel, formerly of Waverly, marries Martha Dassow in Milwaukee April 14. Bert Bessmer, recently operated on in Chicago, returns home. son doctor joins him. Bert will not resume insurance duties until late summer.
Ernest Ladage and H. T. Lau were in Charles City on business Wednesday, meeting local officials and discussing pending projects. The pair's stop followed prior engagements in the region and signals continued cooperation with area enterprises.
Fremont correspondent reports a birthday gathering at the Ernest Piegors home Monday evening. A crowd enjoyed progressive five hundred with high honors to Mrs. Irwin Franklin and Henry Klemp and low to Ardis Ferson and Frank Bruncheon. Mrs. Piegors served a lap supper. Attendees included many Piegors and relatives plus the Kleiss, Klemp, Buhrow, Ganske, Brockman, Franklin, Bruncheon, Ferson, Matthias, Tiedt, Richards, and Wild families.
Ruth Marian Aschbrenner, daughter of Mr and Mrs Robert Aschbrenner, died Thursday evening from burns when her clothing caught fire near a bonfire. Her mother suffered severe burns while trying to extinguish the flames. Survived by parents four brothers and four sisters. Funeral held Sunday at 1:30 p m at home and 2 p m at Spring Fountain Lutheran Church. Burial in Spring Fountain Cemetery.
The junior high declamatory elimination contest was held April 17 with twenty three seventh to ninth graders. Twelve finalists were chosen for the May 1 final at the Opera House. Winners in the humorous division include Florence Struckmeier Clifford Eichmann J Bennett Margaret Webrand Orval Harmening Willis Krueger. Dramatic division winners are Lois Frese Beatrice Bockhaus Pearl Bathke Darlene Bull Elvera Kelling Arline The grades will present a short program with the contest at the Opera House.
Mrs H G Dangremond aged 28 died at her Luverne Minnesota home after a brief illness. She was formerly Miss Ethel Schucknecht of Sumner and daughter of Mr and Mrs W J Schucknecht. Survived by husband, one son, mother, and three brothers. Funeral and burial at her Luverne home Thursday afternoon.

A health talks and free health movies program will be presented at the opera house on May 1 as Child Health day. Sponsored by three local organizations, the event invites all ladies and especially mothers with children. Refreshments will follow for the children.
