The death of Speaker Longworth draws deep regret across Washington and the nation. He is praised as able witty and tactful, with colleagues and the country honoring his character and sympathy for his widow.
Deputy Game warden C A Beck er and staff placed over two thousand young bullheads in the Wapsie east of town after bringing them from Spirit Lake. Several thousand game fish of several species were planted in the river above Frederika dam in a coordinated effort with Tripoli supporters to boost local fishing. Additional catfish bass and bullhead minnows will be released later this year as the department commits to frequent restocking and strict enforcement along the Wapsie.
Ephraim Watenpaugh, 96, longtime Sumner resident and one of two remaining Civil War veterans in town, died at his home after a paralytic stroke. Born 185? in New York, he crossed to Illinois, then Iowa, homesteading in Bremer County before enlisting in Co. B Fifteenth Iowa under Sherman. Surviving son Fields Watenpaugh of Montana and daughter Mrs. Fay of Sumner. Funeral held at 2 p.m. in the local churches with ministers from U B and Methodist congregations.
Alvin Sheffert twenty five of Luana was shot and killed Monday night by Arthur Roberge Milwaukee railroad special policeman after they tried to flee with eighteen tubs of butter from a guarded car. A companion escaped and authorities suspect an organized butter theft gang operating in Fayette and Allamakee counties. The coroner’s jury returned a verdict of death from a gunshot wound and the dead man’s brother faces sentencing in the penitentiary range.
Four counts allege twelve ballots were illegal in the February 11 school election. Contestants seek reversal to overturn a seven vote margin after totals of 299 yes and 2092 no. Petitions cite absent voter forms, voter age, and notary issues as violations. Local board took no action pending further filing by Monday evening.
Gasoline prices at all stations in the city and surrounding towns dropped one cent last Saturday due to over-production in crude oil fields. High test Ethyl now sells at 17.5 cents including tax, low test at 14.5 cents, and tank wagon price for low test at 12.5 cents. Some areas report tank wagon gasoline as low as 11 cents, though not yet general.
A gathering of thirty two relatives celebrated the birthdays of Mrs. Henry and Mrs. Clara Ross at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Emory Henry. Guests included Mr. and Mrs. Guy Hinkley and family, Tibbetts, Dilley, Tibbetts of Richfield, Baxter and family, Henry and Mary Henry, Tibbetts, Carney and families. Dinner and supper were served, gifts given to both honorees.
Miss Elizabeth Henning and Harry H. Buhr, popular locals, wed Wednesday April 8 at 2 50 PM in the First Lutheran church Waterloo with Rev Henry Moeller officiating. Attendants were the groom’s sister and brother Mrs W H Warner and Mr W H Warner. The bride wore blue flat crepe. groom in a dark blue suit. After the ceremony they returned to Tripoli that evening. The couple will reside in Tripoli leasing the Henry Westendorf home after school closes. Best wishes from friends.
On Monday April 13 the 66th birthday of C G Schwem was observed with relatives and friends gathering Sunday afternoon and evening. His daughter Mrs A C Sommer from Waterloo attended with husband and children, joined by Ervin Hoppenworth family from Siegel and other neighbors and friends for visiting and ecards.
In Warren township, August Krueger purchased Carl Drape's east town residence, already occupied by the Drapes. Krueger plans to take possession this fall. Drape retains the house he built last year in the same block and is unsure of his future plans.
Ralph Schultz son of Mr and Mrs W C Schultz of this city broke his right arm Saturday morning while cranking a truck. He works as a farm hand for Mr and Mrs James Madden and had taken milk to Excelsion creamery. Mrs Louis Ehlert brought him to town for surgical care by Dr H W Clasen.
A Des Moines report outlines the Forty fourth General Assembly nearing adjournment with focus on tax reform efforts opposed by organized interests. A new pipeline bill by Senator O P Myers passes the Senate, regulating crossing rights, permits, taxes, bonds. Despite county highway fund petitions, primary road funds remain untouched.
The State highway commission approved paving six miles of highway 59 from Primary No. 10 north to Primary 93 this year. G O VanDerveer of Waverly and F P Hageman urged the move, noting low material and labor costs. Surveying was finished last week under J A Paulson, with contract timing expected to be set in May.
Contracts signed for next year in Tripoli public schools keep the same faculty with the exception of the fourth grade teacher. Miss Loveland leaves to resume college work. a vacancy awaits selection. Current staff includes Irene Oleson, Verna Milroy, Cholene Boyle, Katharine Loveland, Mrs. Walter Beisner, L. W. Vanderlinden, Veryl Sturch, Agnes Lenz, C. Vern Donahoo, Beryl McCreery, superintendent A A Belknap, music director G C Myrick. Five weeks remain in the current school year ending Friday May 22.
Tripoli and surrounding farming communities will gain improved fire protection under a joint plan by the local fire department and Town Council. They will purchase a larger truck equipped with hose and chemical tanks, funded half by the town and half by the department, at an approximate cost of 900 to 1000 dollars. The move aims to ensure chemical and hose coverage for rural calls while maintaining city protection, with fundraising activities planned to cover the town’s share.
Four couples obtained marriage licenses in Minnesota. J Reynold Johnson aged 23 of Worthington and Marie L Peterson aged 22 of Worthington are among the applicants, along with Ralph L Fritz of Waterloo and Lulu Lorenzen of Waverly as the other pair.
The Waverly Chapter of the Walton league invites members and spouses to an Elk dinner April 15 in Waterloo with Elk roast and full trimmings for about 500 attendees. Schild Brothers sign a three year Colburn lime quarry lease to haul 4,000 to 5,000 tons this season, and nine tons have already sold. City council votes to mark Bremer avenue for two hour parking to aid shoppers and farmers, ending overnight car congestion.
Ruth McCaffree of Janesville, daughter of Mr and Mrs R H M McCaffree, won the spelling contest at the Bremer county event held Saturday with 45 contestants. Judges were A N Rogers of Plainfield, Margaret Cane of Readlyn and Hilda Fideler of Tripoli.
Miss Lucille Simmons history and English instructor in the junior high at Waverly schools and daughter of Rev and Mrs Simmons formerly of this place has been awarded the May Douney history scholarship of Drake college.
Dr. E. H. Kromer and wife, with Dr. Kromer’s parents Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Kromer, departed for Texas by automobile to visit Dr. Paul Kromer. The trip will last about a month.
Waverly captured three Becker-Chapman post silver trophies at the Oelwein music contest last week. Richard Harden won first in the tuba solo. Waverly’s wind group took third. First-place entrants advance to the Iowa City State Contest May 5 and 6.
