Rebholz and Drape start excavation on the new high school building funded partly by a 30 percent Public Works Administration grant. The plan includes a combined auditorium and gymnasium, seven classrooms, library, rest rooms, and modern utilities. About 30 workers will be employed for five months under PWA wage scales.
Chas F Mershbach born June 20 1856 in Putlitz Germany died Saturday April 7 at 11 20 after a long illness. He worked as a rural mail carrier in Tripoli and Minnesota before living with relatives in Douglas township. Funeral Wednesday at 1 pm at Louis Bergmann residence and St Peters Evangelical Church burial in St Peters cemetery. Survived by a step daughter Mrs David Dempster a step son Will Boetcher a sister in law Mrs Carolina Meier four nephews and three nieces.
The Junior Auxiliary of the American Legion met at the Legion hall on Monday evening April 9 with eleven members present. President Darleth Ambrose led the ritualistic meeting. A cookie sale to fund the treasury is planned for Saturday April 21. After the business, members enjoyed entertainment and a lunch served by Darlene Buls and Hulda Dettmer.

A jury in the Leonard Schlaugenhauser estate will contest found that instruments 11 and F are not valid wills. Plaintiffs won several cases including Poock v Tiedt and Laird v McKeown. many cases dismissed or closed by written order. final guardianship reports and real estate sales authorized. Mrs Arlene Krueger thanks the Royal Neighbors for a plant during illness. Miss Minnie Schwem of Water loo visited over the weekend at her father C G Schwem and daughter Miss Nevada’s home.
A surprise party marked the 40th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Adolph Koch at their home on Thursday evening April 5. Relatives and children gathered before 6 pm for dinner served at 6:30, with cake made by their daughter Mrs. Arnold Sell. Attendees included Miss Milley Koch Alfred and Barbara Koch James, and many others from Buck Creek Readlyn Frederika and Tripoli. The couple wed 40 years ago at Crane Creek Lutheran Church and have lived on the farm now owned by son Alfred before retiring to Tripoli about ten years ago.
Mr and Mrs Henry Klemp near Tripoli were honored with a surprise party on April 4 to mark their 30th anniversary. Friends attended with baskets for a midnight supper after card games a mock wedding and songs by Richard Leistikow. The gathering included many neighbors and relatives listed by name.
Readlyn forms a new baseball club after Monday meeting electing Clarence Freitag as manager replacing Eric Poock. Freitag becomes secretary, with directors John Meier Henry Schumacher Herman Thran Frank Eichmann and E H Gehrke. Only veterans Diekman Strumpel and Thran remain from last year’s state champions as Freitag builds a new team from young players and new additions.

In a Saturday county spelling bee held at the high school auditorium 38 entrants competed. Prof Hart of State Teachers College Cedar Falls announced words while judges included Leonard Racker Florence Groves and a Sumner couple. Bernadine IngerSol, daughter of Floyd IngerSol and pupil at St Pauls Lutheran Parochial School, won and will represent Bremer county in the state contest in Des Moines in about three weeks.
Mrs Louis Herman, 49, died at her home Sunday afternoon after a brief illness. Survived by husband and two sons David Dopp of this city and Osia Dopp of Chicago, plus father James Whitehead and sister Pearl Whitehead of this city. Funeral at Kaiser funeral home Wednesday at two o'clock with Rev H D Temple of the Methodist Episcopal church officiating, burial in Harlington cemetery.
