Arthur Brisbane contends government overreach threatens liberty while praising labor peace via arbitration. He cites cash farm relief in 1933, Soviet and Italian controls on speech and press, and Mussolini’s plebiscite. The piece weaves fears of dictatorship with anecdotes of bandits and fashion reform.
The district court in Bremer County opened a will contest case over Leonard Schlagenhauser with Michael Meyer from Germany testifying with an interpreter. Meyer, claiming possible paternity, is 42 and a disabled World War veteran. Other witnesses included Rev. E Schoenbohm and William H Sassman Jr and Sr of Denver. Leonard Schlagenhauser died in Independence in January 1933. Charles Kacere faces manslaughter charges from a fatal 1932 crash at highways 10 and 59. Edwin Mummelther of Mrederika pleads not guilty to perjury and illegal liquor sales.
Mr. and Mrs. Otto Biermann were surprised by relatives in the north part of town on their 15th wedding anniversary, April 2. Guests included the Sievers, Ambrose, Schmidt, Schumacher, and Bockhaus families. They enjoyed visiting, cards, and a late lunch. The Biermanns recently moved from a Siegel area farm to the city.
Mr and Mrs Archie Clary of Waverly hosted a Sunday birthday party at their home honoring Mrs Clary born March 29 and her brothers Forest Parson aged 25 and Roland Parson aged 23 whose birthdays fall April 2. Attendees included Parson family relatives from Frederika and Garrison. A birthday dinner at noon and a 6 PM supper concluded a pleasant day. Look at your label. Is your subscription due?
Bremer county board of supervisors approved a road program totaling 39 miles of construction at an estimated $22,350 across Dayton through Washington townships. 1984 budgets were set for supervisors to county officers, with allocations for courts, sheriff, clerk, auditor, treasurer, recorder, schools, courthouse, and related funds.
A large audience heard the Easter cantata Christ Victorious at St Peter Evangelical church with choirs from three local churches. The 40-voice chorus was directed by Rev E F Byers, organ by Clarence J Kimbal, processional by August Wendt, offertory by Mrs L H Fink, and recessional by C J Kimbal. The program filled the church to near capacity and inspired listeners with each number.

Ivan I. Meyer 42 former superintendent of Tripoli public schools died Friday night in Savanna Illinois. Funeral services were held at Iowa Falls Methodist church Tuesday. Born August 26 1891 in Macomb he married Goldena Gardner February 19 1912 and survives with son Maurice daughter Mildred and his parents Ida F. Meyer Macomb Iowa. He taught at Hudson Woodbine Tripoli and Cedar Rapids Iowa.
Readlyn voters head to the polls on May 3 for a special election to decide two questions about an electric light and power system. The measures seek to erect the system with transmission lines and authorize indebtedness not exceeding 16000 dollars. The town now is served by Central States Power and Light Corporation.
District court listings include Maxfield township and Jefferson township school districts in equity suits. Civil cases include C DeHaan Co v E C Claus for 365.20 and Levine Jones v Otto Ludwig and Hannah Ludwig for 1067.26 via transcript of judgment. Guardian appointment sought in Henry Piegers v F J Piegers. W C Hoth vs Carl Behrend and wife for 719.90 in personal taxes.
Henry C. Koch 67, longtime Tripoli resident, died March 27 at Mercy hospital Waverly from heart disease. Born January 9, 1864 in Fre mont township, he lived in Tripoli, worked in local stores, and in recent years at Farmers Store. Survived by his widow Anna Krull, five brothers, one sister, inlaws, and many nieces and nephews. Funeral March 30 at St Peter's Evangelical church with burial in St Peter's Cemetery.
Monday April 2 marked the ninth anniversary of Mr and Mrs Perry L Crittenden. They hosted a 6 30 dinner with guests including her parents Mr and Mrs F D Kimbal their sons Clarence and Frank his mother Mrs Julia Crittenden their son George and Miss Cassie Alma Mundtrom also attended. Cards and visiting provided entertainment.
Tripoli plans a benefit dance on April 10 to raise funds for a full set of new uniforms. Music will be Glenn Byers and his band. Players include W C Fergeman Dexter Krueger Elmer Homan Walter Sommer Lester Bockhaus C A Spier John Simpson Amos Belknap James Bennett Arnold Ducker Ducky Holmes Lester Boeckmann Nelson Nimeyer and L W Vanderlinden. Manager is H W Krueger with Fred Fink as secretary treasurer and J A Hale E A Carstensen and Harold Bierie as directors.
Mr and Mrs Carl Hay enjoyed a housewarming Monday night at their home. Two independent groups attended by design from Crane Creek Lutheran Ladies Aid and local relatives. Guests included Will Dohrmann Lucille Essman Mildred Hunemueller Estella Pries Millard Pries C C Schmidt H L Pries Elmer Rieck William Rieck August Schellhorn Ella Kuker Iola Kuhrt Kenneth Kuhrt Louis Helms Ray Buchanan Emma Pries and others from Leroy township and Minnesota.
Miss Elda Buhr daughter of Mrs Henry Buhr wed Wernhold Meier son of Mr and Mrs John Meier at St Matthew's church on Monday April 2 at 1 30 pm. Bride wore white satin gown with cap veil and carried calla lilies. Attendant Lorena in pink taffeta with roses. Groom attended by brother John. Reception at Mrs Henry Buhr home. They will reside in Readlyn.
The Cedar Valley baseball league of six towns meets in Waverly. Tripoli and Shell Rock vie for the opener while Walter Fergeman and Henry Krueger attend. Twenty games are on the schedule from May 6 to September 16 with Shell Rock hosting Tripoli. Umpires Andy Freidel J Johnson and C Chambers hired and Wilson official baseball adopted.
Miss Dorothy Sparks and Carl Hagemann were married at St Andrew's Episcopal church with Rev. Giles H. Sharpley officiating. The couple, both Waverly high graduates, planned to reside in this city after a wedding dinner at Hotel President with sixteen guests.
Miss Emma Anhalt of this city and Mr. William Snodgrass of Waterloo were united in marriage at St Marys Catholic church Monday morning April 2. Rev T R Collins performed the nuptial mass. Attendants were Miss Esther Anhalt and Charles Anhalt. A dinner followed at the Anhalt home. The bride, formerly a Mercy Hospital bookkeeper, now resides with her parents. The groom works for Otis Elevator Company in Waterloo and they will reside there.
Mary L Thompson aged 80 died Saturday March 24 at her daughter Mrs Bert Winchells home after two weeks illness from pneumonia. Born February 20 1854 in Lockport New York she moved to Iowa as a child living in Black Hawk County and Shell Rock. Widowed in 1906 she resided with her daughter and is survived by son Roy Thompson of Shell Rock and daughter Mrs Bert Winchell of Waverly.
The Waverly golf club is building a 22 feet square clubhouse with a cement floor beside the caddy house to host parties and entertain members and families. Howard Martin of Cedar Rapids will serve as greenkeeper for the summer starting April 1, bringing four years of course care experience from Oelwein under pro C. D. Knapp.
Stuart Shipman age 20 died Monday afternoon after faining at work on his barn and striking his head on the building. He had been in frail health two years. He is survived by his parents Mr and Mrs For rest Shipman and a sister Klea. Easter egg hunt sponsored by the Child Welfare department of the Woman's club drew many children at the Fairgrounds with Donna Mae Carlson, six, winning the golden egg. Waverly Fire Department hosted visiting firemen from Tripoli, Shell Rock and Denver last Wednesday.
