Traffic on 93 North of Tripoli is now closed while two bridges over Plumb Creek are rebuilt. The five month closure redirects through traffic via U.S. 63, Iowa 3, and Iowa 150. United Contractors, Inc. of Des Moines, Iowa is the prime contractor.
The town issues a tornado warning with a continuous siren blast lasting two to five minutes urging immediate shelter. An all clear signal follows as a wailing siren for about 70 minutes ending the alert.
A spring cleanup at Maple Hills Country Club is set for Sunday April 11 starting at 1 00 PM. Club President Erwin Towne says volunteers will clean the clubhouse interior and the surrounding grounds and members are urged to reserve the afternoon to help.
Two Frederika churches sponsored a bicentennial style show at United Methodist Church on Sunday March 28. Skits and displays featured 78 garments ages 30 to 135 years with 67 wedding outfits from 1877 to 1975. An old fashioned beef stew supper followed at St John Lutheran Church by oil lamp light.
Funeral services for Rosa Lampe 67 of Frederika were held Friday at St John Lutheran Church Western Douglas with burial in the church cemetery. Lampe formerly worked at the New Hampton Care Center and died after arriving at New Hampton hospital. She leaves six sons Lavern Larry Virgil Arlan Eugene and Melvin two daughters two sisters and a brother.
The Tri Poli Tastee Creme will be open every day starting at 11 a.m. Effective immediately the change expands weekly hours and confirms ongoing operation.
A free nondiscriminatory cardiac health clinic for children and youth with rheumatic heart problems will be held in Waterloo on May 7, 1976. University of Iowa cardiologists will conduct examinations with X ray and lab services. Served counties include Allamakee, Benton, Black Hawk, Bremer, Buchanan, Butler, Chickasaw, Clayton, Fayette, Floyd, Grundy, Tama, Winneshiek.
Maple Hills Country Club plans to open the course this weekend with practice area and greens available though full play awaits a later date. Membership dues for 1976 are due in two installments, first half delinquent by 15 and second half due by July 15. First ladies day is April 21 and first men’s day April 22. annual open dinner set for April 24. A member letter is being drafted.
Cubmaster David S Bremer of Pack 32 announces 40 Cubs will display items on Tripoli history at the May 8 Heritage 76 Scout-O-Rama at the West Union Fairgrounds. Tickets cost 1 00 and go on sale April 7 through the pack. committee members include Eugene Buenger and Mrs Richard Johansen.
Volunteers begin their annual April Crusade visiting residences and businesses for the American Cancer Society. Monetary gifts support research and battle the disease second only to heart disease in deaths. Please welcome these volunteers and have your gift ready. Also note the Tripoli City Clerk’s office will be closed Wednesday and Thursday for meetings in Des Moines.
In cooperation with the National Weather Service the Butler Brem er Civil Defense schedules two Tornado Spotter training sessions for April 10 and 11. April 10 in Sumner city hall at 1 30 p m. instructors Charles Francisco Waterloo Airport Weather Service. April 11 at Parkersburg High School 7 00 p m with Lawrence Krudwig Des Moines airport. Also the Waverly St Paul Parish House session 1 30 p m will be held with Krudwig. Topics cover tornado causes radar watches and warnings identifying real tornadoes look alikes reporting and Skywarn. Two way radio users and public safety officials urged to attend. Funeral services were held at St Francis Church in Dumont for Daphne Angstman 37 who died Tuesday at Hampton hospital. Survived by husband daughter three sons mother and siblings.
Sharon Hoffman, daughter of Mr and Mrs Robert Hoffman of Waverly, named a Regents Honor Scholar at Wartburg College. She is among 90 finalists selected after three screening steps including entrance test scores class rank a written essay and a personal interview. Sharon plans to graduate in 1976 from Tripoli Community School.
The Second Annual Waterloo Extension Area Senior Citizens Arts and Recreation Festival will be held at the Waterloo Recreation Center May 13, 1976. Entry deadline is April 30. Open to all 60 plus, with exhibits in visual art and performance arts across multiple categories. Sponsored by Bremer County Extension, Area Agency on Aging, and ISU Cooperative Extension Service.
Job Service of Iowa calls for youths 14 or older to sign up for seed corn work in several area towns including Waverly Shell Rock Plainfield Tripoli Denver Janesville and Sumner. Most jobs run two to three weeks in July with older workers starting in June roguing corn and serving as crew leaders and bus drivers. Wage likely around 2.10 dollars per hour with crew leaders paid more.
Tripoli Community School entered 48 events at the Iowa High School Music Association Solo and Ensemble Contest held at Hudson Community School on April 2 and 3. Vocal events earned 8 I's 13 II's and 7 III's while instrumental events produced 10 I's 8 II's and 2 III's with numerous divisions and ensembles recognizing students from Tripoli and nearby areas.
The Bremer County Cancer Board held a March 29 meeting in the First National Bank community room with thirteen members present. Memorials totaling 1537.75 since September 1, 1975 were announced, and local Legion groups donated 131 to the American Cancer Society. A Certificate of Authorization was accepted, Roberta Bamker named historian, Avis McGinn chosen for the Harold Morgan Award, and a nominating committee set. Grace Lutheran Luther League to sponsor a soup supper April 8 to fund the Luther League convention in New Orleans.
Denver Senior Citizens Housing Committee has optioned land from owner Jim Prestein southwest of St. John s Lutheran Church near Fairview Street and Prestein Drive. Preliminary architecture plans for a new development were approved at the meeting. A door to door fund drive will run April 20 to 24. The John Glenn Chapter of the National Honor Society at Tripoli Community School will induct new members on April 14 at 7 30 p.m. in the high school gym. The public is invited to attend.
Emilie Helen Buss Nerge died April 3 at her Sumner area home age 76. Funeral Wednesday at St Paul Lutheran Sumner with Emerson Milnes Funeral Home in charge. Surviving husband Johnnie, sons Melvin and Elmer, one granddaughter, and siblings noted. Burial at Fairview Cemetery Denver Iowa.
