A parade of E S letters swarms into the scene as a quirky trend grows in popularity. Researchers note increasing use of the letter duo across media and branding, signaling a rising cultural fascination with abbreviated typography.
Sixty banners and badges decorate Topeka as two thousand or more delegates arrive for the state Christian Endeavor convention at First Presbyterian Church. Delegates come by Santa Fe and Union Pacific trains from Lawrence Leavenworth Olathe Ottawa and other points, with speakers from Boston and Pittsburgh expected. The city arranges housing meals and events while the church and auditorium are elaborately decorated for the gathering.
A large crowd fills First Presbyterian church as Christian Endeavor delegates, including color and race diverse youths, gather for welcoming addresses by Mayor Harrison and Rev Byers. Sessions tease two gatherings at Presbyterian church and Representative hall with varied programs led by Prof Kelly and Rev Clark among others.
Mrs E M Wardall of the city received a telegram from Sackimuxto California dated May 24 announcing that the convention adopted woman suffrage squarely in the platform. The Sunrise Christian Aidesvor meet is planned for the east side with services at Third Christian church hall Saturday morning, Third Presbyterian at Fourth and Branner, and Liberty church at Fifth and Leland Sunday morning.
Charges filed with Governor Lewelling accuse Warden Dick Chase and Directors J. Hard T. H. Bowler and George Hollenbeck of crooked practices at the Lansing penitentiary. Discharged employees allege book keeping conflicts over hog sales and unspecified transactions. Governor says charges noted but pending further consideration.
The Shawnee county Populist central committee expelled members opposed to the state administration and replaced them with allies. Ed Corning was removed after clashing with J. W. Breidenthal, and Frank Leach facilitated the shift. Frank Curry alleged Breidenthal’s role and warned of a fight over future nominations, saying the group may abstain from primaries if the state house slate dominates. Names substituted include R. E. Heller A. Webber and T. A. Grange.
The enormous scaffolding in the center of the state house dome is at risk of collapse as underpinning fails. Workmen rush to add supports while visitors still climb the structure during ongoing dome construction.
Nave McCord & Co, a major western firm, plans to locate a new wholesale grocery in Topeka. A sizable building will be secured, with Parkhurst Davis & Co supplying fruit and other goods, and an experienced manager has been hired.
At Otatox Kans May 24 the Second congressional convention resumed at 9 o'clock. One hundred and fifty four ballots were cast with no change. Funston faction defeated in attempt to break the anti Funston compact. Campaigners debate motion to end pledges. Buchan hopeful of nomination with rumored deal to receive Funston support. Phillipsburg session reports thirtieth ballot without change. Local motions and candidate list read. J H Reeder withdraws. Weather notes mention showers and legal notices and health updates on Mrs Lease’s husband.
The Topeka District M E conference adopted a resolution urging Republicans to adopt a clear prohibition stance or risk Methodist support. Delegates from 29 churches, totaling 4 684 members, warned they would abandon allegiance to any party that ignores prohibition, signaling likely wider district endorsement.
May 24 Senate bribery inquiry opens into sugar trust links with tariff legislation. E J Edwards testifies about sources for his Holland letter while details remain scarce due to closed doors. He alleges Carlisle pressed for sugar protection and hints at large contributions to Democratic campaigns in 1882 and connections to brokers Moore and Schley.
