Harrisville Pa May 23 The state Republican convention drew a large crowd at the opera house as 257 delegates met to nominate candidates for governor lieutenant governor auditor general secretary of state and congressman at large. Gen Daniel Hastings was unanimously nominated after Gen Beaver proclaimed him the hero of Johnstown. Others named include Walter Lyon for lieutenant governor Amos Flan for auditor general James W Latta for secretary of internal affairs Galusta A Grow and Geo F Huff as at large congressman. The platform endorsed bimetallism and pro American protection while denouncing Democratic tariff policy and urging strong measures against crime and unfit citizens.

Judge Foster Hints Release of Sanders Men
Judge Foster pressed for habeas corpus relief for Sanders and his army after hearings with Captain Waters and Insurance Commissioner Snider. He sent a telegram to U S district attorney William Perry urging discharge of all but a few. Perry replied he would act after arriving. Balloonist’s narrow ascent ends as balloon bursts
Miss Josephine Baraboo, a balloonist from Open, nearly died during an ascent when the hot air balloon burst at about 800 feet and struck the parachute, preventing its opening until about seventy five feet from the ground. She was badly bruised but expected to recover.
