A Kansas dispatch reports Gov. Lewelling signaling possible retirement from the governorship as party factions prepare for renomination. He notes campaign bitterness and duty to the party, with Populist county conventions largely backing his renomination, though several counties show mixed delegations and potential challenges at the state convention.
May 15 at Sarsiaga Sanatoca the Presbyterian general assembly heard Prof. Smith's twelve grounds of appeal read by Elder Daniel N. Shields. The session closed with hissing as Shields spoke and Smith prepared to reply amid a four hour hearing and a shaken crowd. In Chicago, May 25, Old Hutch and other operators fought at McCoy's hotel leaving Crum unarrested and Hixon lightly wounded.
United States District Attorney Perry consents to releasing all men except Sanders and the engineer and treman. The group will be asked to appear at the September session as Captain J. G. Waters reports Perry's position and Sanders may consent to terms for immediate release.
The counterfeiters cases against Frank L Turner Hoy Hoishines and Joseph Teter opened today before US Commissioner Mileham Teter waived examination and confessed He will testify later and bond set at 22000 Hoffhines and Turner cases continued to June 21 and 12 with bonds 2000 and 200 respectively
In Chase county a county convention nominated Jefferson after Fred Pracht J L Thompson and W A Wood as delegates to the state Populist convention at Topeka on June 12. Resolutions endorsed the state administration and woman suffrage and condemned Coxey's treatment. A separate note reports Senate committees finding bribe offers in the Kyle Hunton case and refuting Butts claim of a bankers syndicate. Major Wm Sims Jr grandson fell sixteen feet from a banister in the state house and broke his right leg.
Ed Griffith injured and confined to his room with a sprained ankle. Henry Clark of Lawrence named regent of the state university replacing ex Governor Robinson Greenwald. Councilman Stephenson attended the Second District congressional convention in Olathe. A mere suffrage meeting led by Willis Gleed is set for Saturday June 26. Rev Benjamin L Smith of Topeka linked to state Christian Endeavor union presidency. Prof D A Kelly of Emporia mentioned. Scottish Rite Masons banquet tonight honoring 15 graduates at Masonic parlors with Ohmer brothers supplying refreshments. An effort to grant Bowers and Martineau an extra 40 for high school work postponed due to lack of quorum. May 7 estimate of 3828.1 deemed low. Beck, Miller, and Shaw failed to constitute a quorum.
Desperate clashes spread across Centratia and nearby areas as Duquoia and Centratia miners renew assaults on armories and mines. Troops and deputies mobilize. reports note powder blasts, barricades, and ongoing armed confrontations with fluctuating casualties.
In Washington on May 25, Senators Hoar and Harris clashed during debate on the Hawaiian resolution. Harris asserted the tariff bill was before the senate and accused Hoar of out of order discussion. Hoar denounced Harris as discourteous while Harris retorted that Hoar violated rules and owed no courtesy to Tennessee. The exchange ended after sharp retorts between the two lawmakers.
May 25 Leavenworth reports almost all strikers returned to the city after being marched from the Missouri side by sheriff deputies and ferried by sympathizers in skiffs. Agitators work city wide with police and labor groups showing sympathy though no general strike is seen. About 100 Kansas and Texas mine workers refused to report for work.
The French Republic filed a $1,000,000 damages suit in the U S circuit court against the World’s Columbian Exposition today over claims linked to goods harmed in the Manufactures building fire. Indians Return From Their Junker. Washington May 25.—Osage delegates, who had been in the city two weeks discussing reservation matters with Congress, have returned to the Osage reservation in Oklahoma.
Dr H W Roby reports Mrs Mary E Lease in a very critical state and deteriorating despite morphine relief. He cites disputes between her physician Dr Williams and homeopaths at Olathe, Governor St John involved, and notes her husband’s absence and her son Charley remaining with her. Indignation rises among Olathe citizens.
About 32 unemployed men from Topeka plan a 1 PM march to Mayor T W Harrison to demand work. They will join General Sanders and may proceed to Leavenworth if no jobs are found, while the mayor denies offering local work.
At a Leavenworth gathering Clemens and others proposed forming a Home Guard to maintain order amid worker unrest. A resolution urged Captain Hunter to offer state help to the governor, aiming to curb striking miners and deter ex officials. About 75 residents signed a request for work.
