Navy recruits pour in from Arizona plus twins abroad

Navy recruiter A. T Flynn reports May sees 23 Phoenix men join the service and June figures rise to 19. Among them were Emmet and Emory Boyle, twins from Globe now living in Clovis NM, and Horace and William Maxwell, also from Clovis. Federal Prisoners Given Sentences in Washington Court

In a federal court at Washington today judge H Sawtelle sentenced J C Roppins for espionage act violation to two years at Leavenworth. Elsivo Lopes received a draft violation sentence of days in Gila county jail. James Breen was fined 100 dollars for selling liquor to Indians. Sam Ford also 100 dollars and a Stday sentence in Gila county jail for giving a drink of liquor to a soldier. Joseph Nichols was sentenced to 15 months at Fort Leavenworth for draft evasion.

More Stenographers in Government Day Tucson

June 7 The government must have more stenographers and typewriters. The United States civil service commission received word from the local board that despite efforts, the required number of applicants for stenographer and typewriter examinations for department service has not been met and the board is urged to continue recruiting. The civil service commission added that the need will persist during the war and examinations will be held whenever four candidates can be assembled.

May copper output at Douglas smelters totals 24 million pounds

Douglas reports May copper production across two smelters at 24,170,000 pounds. Copper Queen led with 16,142,000 pounds and Calumet Arizona yielded 8,028,600 pounds, with O14 Dominion at Close contributing 2,239,000 pounds and Humboldt smelter at 2,000,008 pounds. The figures indicate a normal mining period in the region.

Lyman Dam to be rebuilt by state in Apache County

June 7 Phoenix George W Harben aided by Judge George It Croup of St Johns is abstracting titles to 80 tracts for a state loan to finish the Lyman dam project in Apache County. The state treasurer will deliver 120000 for the loan, with work due in ten days and completion expected by January 1 1919. The old dam failed in a 1915 flood killing eight and causing 300000 in damage.

Judge Lockwood seeks reelection for Cochise County bench

Judge A C Lockwood announces his bid for a second term in Cochise County. He has served about a third of the unexpired term of Judge Sutter and plans a countywide campaign by letter and brief trips. He led the Liberty Loan Committee during the war and has long resided in Douglas after being born in Illinois. He previously served as Douglas city attorney. He will run on the Democratic ticket in the September 10 election.

Mexicans Deported for Violating Work Contracts

Four Mexican laborers imported under U S work-exception rules were ordered deported from the immigration station in Tecson Arizona to Nogales for leaving the agreed agricultural labor. The group, two men and two women, had shifted to other employment after entering the United States.

Brakeman Fatally Struck Near Pol o In Tucson

S P Brakeman S P Brakeman 15 Struck By Train in Tucson near Pol o east of the city Wednesday asleep on the main rails. He died Thursday morning at St Marys hospital. Inquest held by Coroner Pease. Age 25, survived by a widow and one child.

JURY FINDS GIBSON GUILTY IN SHORT TRIAL

The State of Arizona charged Lafe Gibson with fostering liquor sales in Gleeson. The trial lasted about twenty minutes with three state witnesses. Jurors, mostly Bisbee residents, were chosen. Gibson’s counsel waived his presence. Witnesses testified Gibson sold whiskey and filled barrels with water to mislead locals. The case continued on Page Eight.
