A wartime appeal to Arizona women urges cutting nonessential purchases to aid the war. It promotes lending money via War Savings Stamps, promising 4 percent interest, with $417 stamps maturing to $5.00 on January 1. The campaign presses pledge signing by June 28 to back troops and weapon supply.
Phoenix June 21 Dr Orville Brown of Phoenix was named by Governor Hunt as state superintendent of public health to replace Dr W Sweek who resigned to join the U S Army Medical Corps. Brown will assume duties at once and is an authority on asthma with a national reputation and a Royal Society honor.
Ray B. Krebs, secretary of Cochise county Local Board, reports General Crowder's instruction classifies married men since May 18, 1917 into Class One. New questionnaires mailed June 25 must be returned by July 1. duplicates available if not received by June 27. Registrants June 8, 1918 receive numbers on the new form around June 25 for reference.
Federal court in Tucson announces twenty five indictments linked to the 1917 Bisbee deportations. Named are Harry Wheeler former Cochise county sheriff, J C Greenway, Wm H Brophy, and Reuben Clampitt, with several others identified as leaders in regional finance and industry. Wheeler has been linked to the deportations in a cablegram.
Early today a committee from Douglas arrived in Bisbee to circulate petitions seeking the removal of the court house. Despite numerous refusals the Douglas group pressed on with a late afternoon attempt to secure support for the move, as reported by Bisbee Ore.
J M McDonald of Bisbee announces candidacy for Cochise County Sheriff on the Democratic ticket. He has lived in the county since age three, served as street commissioner, deputy U S Marshal since Joe Dillon’s appointment, and is secretary of the Cochise county central committee. Also notes cantaloupe shipments from Salt River valley set to depart Mesa June 24 and Glendale by July 1 to 5, with 500-600 carloads from Mesa and about 700 from Glendale expected by Santa Fe and Arizona Eastern railroads.
A ten year old boy was crushed to death when a heavy ore wagon driven by his father ran over him after the child either fell or tried to dismount. The incident occurred two miles from town near the Lucky Cass mill as the father rushed to Dr. Hughart’s office. Both parents are grief struck. the wheel passed over the boy’s stomach before aid could arrive.
Petition with about 4000 names filed to initiate a measure to reintroduce the death penalty at jury discretion in first degree murder cases. Senate Bill No. 11 protects soldiers civil rights during service, ensuring home finances remain intact. Also signed were Senate Bill No. 2 creating a dairy commissioner, a substitute for House Bill No. 3 on soldier voting, Senate Bill No. 20 criminalizing forged affidavits for draft deferments, and Senate Bill No. 9 the Americanization bill establishing night schools for English language and American ideals for non-English speakers.
