Arizona Splendid Showing in Third Liberty Loan Drive

May 31 final figures show Arizona subscribers nearly doubled the second drive. Some 37,025 Arizonans bought bonds totaling 6,975,750 par value, far exceeding the 3,270,000 quota and oversubscribing by 213 percent. Arizona led the twelfth Federal Reserve district in both subscribers and amount raised.

Hearn case goes to jury at night session

The State accuses Roy Hearn of killing Fo H Arrowwood. Trial paused at 7 o clock. witnesses including Dr Briscoe and Mrs Stewart testified for the state, and Hearn testified later claiming Arrowwood drew first with a Winchester rifle. The case will be given to the jury in the evening session for arguments.

Phoenix May 31 The legislature debated contempt law expansion to protect reporters and officials from misrepresentation. The house considered whether bills fit the governor's call and discussed a war measure relief bill for Graham county officers slain during arrest efforts. The senate advanced a state council of defense bill and debated an Americanization measure for English instruction to foreigners and illiterates.

Commission Awards Paving Contracts Between Bisbee and Lowell

Cochise County Highway Commission met in Bisbee with most members present to approve the Warren Bros bid for widening pavement between Bisbee and Lowell. They also accepted bids from Bisbee Auto Co for a large touring car and Hood & Bledsoe for two Ford light touring cars to be converted into light trucks for the engineering corps, which will start surveying the Tombstone Benson road soon. The curb and sidewalk project from Bisbee toward Lowell will be handled by the board of supervisors at their next meeting. The commission plans to reconvene June 7 to bid the grading of the Bisbee to Douglas road.

Hoover denial of wheat stories in Arizona plants

In a telegram to the Arizona Food Administration Hoover denies published wheat conservation claims. He says no statement asserting less conservation is true. He notes a wheat surplus allows only about one third of normal home consumption and details a 75 million bushel May stock to cover roughly three months, with three months normal usage at 126 million bushels.
