Des Moines reports H L J Gresser a farmer living seven miles south of Des Moines and a half mile northwest of Avon was found dead with two bullets in the head at his isolated farmhouse. Authorities deem it murder with no sign of self harm and note the house showed little disturbance. C F Graves and C P Keiling recall seeing William Carter visiting the farm. Carter had recently bought the property from Gresser.
Des Moines Oct 6 Frank Brothers was indicted by the grand jury for shooting Howard Wittell a 12 year old newsboy at the rear of 119 Walnut street The direct charge alleges with intent to commit murder He was arrested within an hour of the indictment and posted $1000 bond signed by Mose Levick
W B Brown Storm Lake banker testified that he trusted his assistants for the false report to the controller of the currency. Senator Healy’s cross examination pressed Brown to admit carelessness in bank conduct as government and defense rested with trial to proceed tomorrow.
Louis Valeske pleaded guilty to practicing medicine without a state certificate and was fined $300. In default, he faces county jail time at $3.88 daily. The report also notes family tragedy and other scattered items from New Hampton.
Des Moines October reports the death of Hon. Richard B Clarkson pension agent for the Iowa Nebraska district and former editor of the Iowa State Register aged 65. He had suffered diabetes and died at 7 30 yesterday morning at his home 805 Pleasant street Des Moines. He leaves wife and children including Joby Clarkson and Mrs Jon Zivart.
W V Willcox has been appointed pension agent for the Iowa Nebraska district by President Roosevelt. He will receive his bond and assume duties once approved, likely by Oct 12. The term runs to December 1906 with expectation of a four year extension.
Report describes General Weaver knocked down during a disturbance at a tabernacle meeting. Pentico, a drunken attendee, was arrested after the incident. Weaver remained not seriously injured.
