The History of Germany Valley by Anna Wellhousen
In 1890 Adam Fister began hauling lumber from Bancroft and built a complex that locals dubbed Hell's Half Acre. The settlement, largely German, grew around Fister’s store later renamed German Valley. Herman Tjarks Sr. bought the store, then Patterson, who added a post office. Joe Russell opened a thriving blacksmith shop, hiring Hase Austin who also ran a second shop and taught school. Cream separators emerged, Frank Bacon built a cream station, and a creamery formed as farmers produced milk locally. Churches were limited. Rev Williamson conducted Sunday services in a schoolhouse and laid the groundwork for a Methodist church at Titonka. The butter industry shifted as creamery profits rose and ownership changed among local families.

German Valley Commerce and Rail Rumors Then Decline
The passage traces ownership changes of local businesses from Hansens to Hellers to Franks, with Pranks the last operators in German Valley. It notes the creamery’s machines moved to Thanka, a new amusement hall, informal youth activities, and races. Rail plans shifted, Titonka growth hurting German Valley trade, store closures, and Krause family succession after a period of decline.
