New Currency Won’t Trigger Inflation, Economists Say
Two Townes College economists Geoffrey Shepherd and Wallace Wright dispute fears of rapid currency inflation from new federal emergency bank legislation. They argue the new money would not inflate prices unless credit expands, as each dollar added is matched by credit removed. They note the currency is backed by 100 percent commercial paper pledged to Fed banks, predicting only mild price rises from modest credit expansion and banks staying liquid.
