Mrs. Caroline Muender 78 was killed instantly at 1 25 p m Sept 23 when struck by a Great Northern streamliner at the Main Street crossing in Milledgeville. Eyewitnesses and officials described the run to the crossing and the incomplete stop 1500 feet past it. A verdict of accidental death was returned. funeral services were held at the Brethren church with burial in Maple Ridge cemetery. She was born Feb 7 1876 in Jordan township and married Albert W Muender in 1908. Surviving are sisters and brothers in Sterling and Milledgeville.
Friday evening October 1 at 8 o clock in the church Esther Schmaling will present photographs from her Alaskan journey. Live Wire class members will host a silver tea to raise funds for the class treasury.
Fred Katzenberger 78 of Mt Carroll died Friday at home. Funeral 2 p m Sunday at Frank Funeral Home with Rev. John J. Main officiating. Burial Oak Hill cemetery. Born May 17 1876 in Eau Claire Wis son of John and Elizabeth Heid Katzenberger. Survived by widow three daughters ten grandchildren 18 great grandchildren a sister and five brothers. Fannie Nace 84 of Savanna died Thursday Sept 23 in Savanna City hospital after a broken hip. Funeral 9:30 a m Monday at St John s Catholic church burial in Savanna cemetery. Born Oct 21 1869 in Savanna daughter of Henry Wise and Elizabeth Miller Nace. Never married. Survived by two half sisters and a half brother.
Mr and Mrs Dwight Spealman and Mrs Hazel Lafferty of Lake Chelan Wash spent Sunday in Champaign with BRI Spealman a student there and then went to Lansing Mich and brought home a new car for Mrs Lafferty. Tomorrow she will leave for home and Mrs Spearman Mrs Alvin Larem and Mrs Clayton Kaul will accompany her for a short trip home by train.
Mr and Mrs Ernest Brown and their two sons were dinner guests Sunday at the home of Mr and Mrs Orion Alexander. Mr and Mrs Alexander were evening visitors at the home of Mr and Mrs Albert Adolph.
Mr and Mrs W G Heide express gratitude for kind cards gifts and good wishes received on their 60th wedding anniversary. They thank friends and neighbors for the love and support shown during the celebration.
Adjutant and committee chairs for the Carroll County American Legion were named by County Commander Marrion Savanna at a Thomson meeting. New posts include Harold Westphal Savanna as adjutant and J Vincent Sullivan Savanna as service officer. By-law amendments were approved and the next meeting set for Oct 18 in Savanna with the 13th district fall gathering Oct 3 in Oregon.

In Carroll County Court George Rhodes 20 Chadwick fined $50 for automobile wheel larceny. Henry Turner 52 Aurora pleads guilty drunk driving fined $200 after Route 80 crash near Thomson. Civil decree Mildred Elliott divorced from Ervin Elliott Lanark. City of Savanna vs Mid-Continent Petroleum Co continues to Nov 8. Real estate transfers listed for several townships including York Savanna Milledgeville and Gilberts.
Sheriff Harry Miller announced heightened measures at the county jail after a recent escape attempt by four prisoners. Extra lighting was installed above courthouse windows on both sides as guards found a strip of iron and a pipe hidden in the prisoners quarters.
James Eller 16, a Polo junior, died when his borrowed car left the Milledgeville road near Polo and overturned. The body was found at 5:15 am by Robert Kalas. an inquest followed. Survived by parents, three brothers, a sister, and grandparents. funeral held at Milledgeville Brethren church.
Milledgeville witnessed Phyllis Wolf wed Arlyn Bryson at the Brethren Church with Rev. H. H. Rowsey officiating. The couple, returning from a northern wedding trip, will reside at 421 S. Division St. Polo. Savanna hosted Mary Thulen and Lawrence Bauer marrying at 2 30 p m with Justice Farle Engelking presiding. They plan to live in Galena.
Navy Secretary Charles S. Thomas will address a Carroll County Republican Women’s club banquet at Mt. Carroll High School gym on October 14 at 7 PM. Tickets go to members first then the public. Thomas will fly into Rockford at 4:20 PM and travel to Mt. Carroll. Thomas, from California, previously advised Defense Secretary James Forrestal and led California Republican finance efforts.
Mrs. Alton G. Hall state president of the American Association of University Women will be guest speaker for the Mt Carroll branch at its first meeting of the season on Monday Oct 4 at 8 pm in Mrs Robert Keohane home. A 7 15 pm board meeting precedes the session with prospective members invited. Hall will discuss The American Citizen and AAUW. Professor Nathaniel Miles chairs the legislative committee. Dr Katharine Wright Northwestern University chief psychiatrist will lecture at Evanston Oct 9 on Women at Work with a workshop including sessions at the National College of Education Evanston and Northwestern University. About 49 members of the American Legion Auxiliary of Carroll County attended the Lanark meeting and installation at 8:00 p.m. in the Legion hall last Wednesday. New officers installed were President Grace Sweitzer Lanark Vice President Ruth Grimm Mt. Carroll Secretary George Peat Lanark Treasurer Doris Brown Thomson Chaplain Marie Olson Chadwick Historian Marie Friedenbach Savannah. A short program followed with community singing and a piano duet Elaine Hanbecker Patricia Graham. Refreshments were served by Lanark Auxiliary members.
Mrs. Ross King appointed business manager for the Clinton symphony orchestra overseeing finances tickets and publicity. The first concert is December 12 at Washington Junior High auditorium with 52 members including Arietta Gordon on french horn. conductor Lowell P. Adams notes family friendly light music. Mrs. King formerly worked for Review Publications and is married to a northend Clinton physician.
Farmers from Carroll County enter Brown Swiss stock for the 2nd International Dairy Show to be held Oct 9 to 16. C Robert Sibley lists 11 animals, Edwin Keim to exhibit a bull calf. Junior entries from Gary Arcilla and Truman Sibley participate in 4 H and FFA classes. Open Brown Swiss judging Oct 14–15 by Harold Kaeser.
A Tuesday scramble dinner at the home of Mrs. Kathryn Rahn honored Mrs. J. B. Beardsley of Seattle Mrs. Donald Baerditsburg Pa Mrs. Emma Miller and Mrs. Stanley Locke of Milwaukee who visited relatives. Others present included several local couples and extended family members.
Mr and Mrs Denton Naniga and guests Mrs Robert Irish and daughter Kim of Downers Grove visited Mr and Mrs Ralph Anderson in Stockton for Sunday dinner. Marilyn St Clair of Clinton IA wed David Young of Thomson in Zion Lutheran Church Clinton. H C Hinkel visited Sunday with Mr and Mrs Allen Zugschwerdt. They drove through town and had Savanna dinner before returning home.
Salem Home Bureau held a Tuesday meeting at the home of Mrs. Max Fulton with twenty members present. Mrs. Boyd Handel led a yarn and rayon craft lesson on how to make stores, and Mrs. Fulton spoke on recent developments in medicine and public health. A nominating committee was named, and plans were announced for the October 7 annual meeting in Mt. Carroll with decorations by Mrs. Isadore Saidel and Mrs. Adeline Van Orman. A fall tour on October 30 will go to Chicago to visit Olson Rug Co. and attend the Ice Follies.
Arraignments occurred in Carroll county circuit court with three defendants pleading guilty and two seeking extra time to file motions. William Lilly admitted larceny and requested probation. Samuel Turnbaugh Jr pleaded guilty to larceny of a motor vehicle and grand larceny. William Hoover pleaded guilty to armed robbery larceny and assault. Charles Greer and Lawrence Hemminger asked for time to file motions. All three remain jailed. Turnbaugh and Hoover to October hearings, with others bound over on an escape attempt charge.
About 100 attended a craft day at the farm bureau hall on Monday September 20. Activities included basketry crochet and Swedish weaving lessons along with painting on wood and demonstrations. New cooperators welcomed and a Home Bureau annual meeting set for October 7 with, potluck, and speakers.
Four men bound over to the county grand jury after a failed jail escape at Carroll County Jail. Hemminger and Greer held on 15000 bond, Turnbaugh and Hoover on 10000 bonds. Hemminger allegedly hid hacksaw blades in his shoes and a bar was cut in the cell block during the attempt.
The second annual Save Your Land contest will be held Friday October 8 at 1 15 p m in the farm bureau hall. Eligible entrants include young farmers whether tenants or landlords with a 15 contestant limit. Prizes total 50 dollars with 25 15 and 10 for first to third place. Each contestant and spouse attend a dinner sponsored by Carroll County Bankers Association in late October.
