Milledgeville Woman Killed By Train At Crossing

Mrs. Caroline Muender 78 was killed instantly at 1 25 p m Sept 23 when struck by a Great Northern streamliner at the Main Street crossing in Milledgeville. Eyewitnesses and officials described the run to the crossing and the incomplete stop 1500 feet past it. A verdict of accidental death was returned. funeral services were held at the Brethren church with burial in Maple Ridge cemetery. She was born Feb 7 1876 in Jordan township and married Albert W Muender in 1908. Surviving are sisters and brothers in Sterling and Milledgeville.

Fannie Nace 84 of Savanna died Thursday Sept 23 in Savanna City hospital after a broken hip. Funeral 9:30 a m Monday at St John s Catholic church burial in Savanna cemetery. Born Oct 21 1869 in Savanna daughter of Henry Wise and Elizabeth Miller Nace. Never married. Survived by two half sisters and a half brother.

Spealman Family Members Travel for Visit and New Car

Mr and Mrs Dwight Spealman and Mrs Hazel Lafferty of Lake Chelan Wash spent Sunday in Champaign with BRI Spealman a student there and then went to Lansing Mich and brought home a new car for Mrs Lafferty. Take Additional Precautions At County Jail

Sheriff Harry Miller announced heightened measures at the county jail after a recent escape attempt by four prisoners. Extra lighting was installed above courthouse windows on both sides as guards found a strip of iron and a pipe hidden in the prisoners quarters.

Hazelhurst Teen Dies in Polo Crash Early Sunday

James Eller 16, a Polo junior, died when his borrowed car left the Milledgeville road near Polo and overturned. The body was found at 5:15 am by Robert Kalas. an inquest followed. Survived by parents, three brothers, a sister, and grandparents. funeral held at Milledgeville Brethren church.

Navy Secretary Charles S. Thomas to Speak at Mt Carroll Banquet

Navy Secretary Charles S. Thomas will address a Carroll County Republican Women’s club banquet at Mt. Carroll High School gym on October 14 at 7 PM. Tickets go to members first then the public. Thomas will fly into Rockford at 4:20 PM and travel to Mt. Carroll. Thomas, from California, previously advised Defense Secretary James Forrestal and led California Republican finance efforts.

Salem Home Bureau Meets at Mrs Fulton's with 20 present

Salem Home Bureau held a Tuesday meeting at the home of Mrs. Max Fulton with twenty members present. Mrs. Boyd Handel led a yarn and rayon craft lesson on how to make stores, and Mrs. Fulton spoke on recent developments in medicine and public health. A nominating committee was named, and plans were announced for the October 7 annual meeting in Mt. Carroll with decorations by Mrs. Isadore Saidel and Mrs. Adeline Van Orman. Arraign Five Men In Circuit Court Pleas And Requests

Arraignments occurred in Carroll county circuit court with three defendants pleading guilty and two seeking extra time to file motions. William Lilly admitted larceny and requested probation. Samuel Turnbaugh Jr pleaded guilty to larceny of a motor vehicle and grand larceny. William Hoover pleaded guilty to armed robbery larceny and assault. Charles Greer and Lawrence Hemminger asked for time to file motions. All three remain jailed. Turnbaugh and Hoover to October hearings, with others bound over on an escape attempt charge.

Craft day and notices from Home Bureau hall

About 100 attended a craft day at the farm bureau hall on Monday September 20. Activities included basketry crochet and Swedish weaving lessons along with painting on wood and demonstrations. New cooperators welcomed and a Home Bureau annual meeting set for October 7 with, potluck, and speakers.

Four Men Face Added Charges After Jailbreak Attempt

Four men bound over to the county grand jury after a failed jail escape at Carroll County Jail. Hemminger and Greer held on 15000 bond, Turnbaugh and Hoover on 10000 bonds. Hemminger allegedly hid hacksaw blades in his shoes and a bar was cut in the cell block during the attempt.

Save Your Land Contest Set for October 8

The second annual Save Your Land contest will be held Friday October 8 at 1 15 p m in the farm bureau hall. Eligible entrants include young farmers whether tenants or landlords with a 15 contestant limit. Prizes total 50 dollars with 25 15 and 10 for first to third place. Each contestant and spouse attend a dinner sponsored by Carroll County Bankers Association in late October.
