Sheriff Hary Miller investigated two separate crashes early Friday in the county. Arnold Blakeslee of Chadwick survived a ditching with a slight forehead cut while his car was badly damaged. A truck carrying hogs overturned two miles north of Lanark on highway 72, killing eleven hogs and scattering the rest before they were gathered and moved toward Chicago.
Real estate deeds list transfers among Smith Griswold Echternach Sites Law Daws Nice Fossett Nichol Rummel Weidman Kniss Grindley and others in Lanark Savanna Milledgeville Mt. Carroll Cary and Wysox with licenses and court actions including one marriage license and sobriety related fines. Robert Erdmier resigns from Carroll County Farm Bureau Insurance Department to farm.
Kenneth Schneider of Mt. Carroll Illinois shows the grand champion Duroc in the Duroc show at the Iowa State Fair with junior yearling Miracle Kid do. The same pig was reserve champion at the Illinois State Fair this year among 300 plus Durocs shown from four states.
Five indictments, two suppressed, were returned by the Carroll county grand jury. William Hoover of Lanark faces armed robbery charges after allegedly holding up Charles and Mrs Shore in Shannon Aug 30, taking 72 dollars. Samuel J. Turnbaugh Jr. of Mt Carroll is charged with larceny of a motor vehicle after taking a Moltmann and Smith car on July 1. Charles W Greer of Sterling is charged with burglary and larceny for the July 1 theft of a .22 revolver from the Howard B. Gorman building at Savanna airport. All defendants are in county jail under bonds of 5000, 2000, and 3000 respectively.
Mrs. Raymond J. Crist of Mt. Carroll announced the marriage of her daughter Barbara Jean to Donald Kille of Mt. Carroll. The ceremony was Sept. 9 at Thomson with Arden Rhodes and Walter Harman in attendance. Kille recently left for military service. Dororthy Sorensen of Clinton wed Willis Holmquist of Mt. Carroll Sept. 16 in Camanche Iowa with Justice Howard Petersen officiating. The couple resides at 2314 McKinly Street Clinton Iowa.
Three 16 year old Milledgeville youths were fined 75 dollars plus costs for dropping rocks from an overhead crossing onto an eastbound North Coast Limited train. Each was ordered to pay 40.40 dollars for repairs after the windshield of a Vista Dome car was smashed but no passengers were injured. The hearing before Justice Loren Cates in Mt. Carroll heard details from railroad special agents. Suspects named are James Dieter Larry Spaulding and Don Eubanks.
The Sharon Dale Dance Studio of Sterling plans dance lessons in Mt Carroll if enough interest exists. Registration is next Tuesday Sept 28 from 3 to 6 pm at the Mt Carroll Community Building, or applicants may mail a card to Sterling. Further information is in the studio advertisement in this issue.
Glenn Diehl of Lanark Illinois has been hired to represent the three Farm Bureau Insurance Companies in Lanark and Shannon. Diehl will serve the territory to be announced later. He brings seven years of experience with Carroll Service Company Feed Division and is well known in the region.
Jack Bowman 27 of Mt Carroll is hospitalized in Savanna with a shoulder wound after Don Rush fired at what he thought a red squirrel. The incident occurred north of Mt Carroll as Bowman sat beside a tree. Bowman is expected to be released Tuesday.
The Chadwick Woman's Club opened its year with a 6 30 dinner at the high school gym attended by 65 guests. Col L A Burbank of the Savanna Ordnance Depot spoke about Italy with slides of Naples Rome Florence Milan Venice and more and shared an amusing misprice glass anecdote. Three new members were welcomed Mrs Carnness Mrs Robert Balk and Mrs William Janssen.
Carroll Chapter D A R met September 18 at Mt. Carroll home of Mrs. Fred Rhodes Jr. Assistant hostesses were several members. A donated antique table for the Illinois room in Continental Hall was accepted. Mrs. Henry C. Warner spoke on the Constitution and national defense urging vigilance and voting for good government. Next meeting November 20 at the Radke hotel Savanna with Col. L A Burbank as speaker showing Bavaria and Ludwig slides.
General Hobart R. Gay named Commanding General of Fifth Army succeeding William Kean. Gay, a veteran of World War II and Korea, comes from Fort Hood where he leads III Corps. He previously commanded VI Corps at Camp Atterbury and held multiple chief of staff roles in Allied theaters. Local social notes record visits by Vernon Alexander family and Morton Higley household.
Mount Carroll suspect William Mullen aged 26 was held to the grand jury on burglary and larceny charges after admitting theft of about 175 from the Emens home and a German Luger from Pitts Sporting Goods in Savanna. He sold the pistol in Clinton, Iowa, and used most of the proceeds.
Fire at Clyde Foltz farm five miles southwest of Mount Carroll destroyed a 76 by 50 foot barn and a machine shed on Saturday afternoon. Loss was estimated around $25,000, partly insured. Three firefighters sustained burns. 3,700 bales hay and 38 acres of lead straw were lost, along with a farm disk. Two sows and 15 small pigs were saved.
The 1954 Red Annual Fall School at Savanna Illinois Ordnance Depot hosted by Commanding Officer A. Burbank drew about 260 visitors with 145 fire departments and 12 equipment firms represented. Participants included 33 SOD firefighters with 45 auxiliaries and crews from Galena and Greater Rockford. Attendees hailed from Illinois Wisconsin and other states including Texas Indiana Missouri Minnesota Nebraska and Ohio.
Chadwick residents Mr and Mrs John Kingery left Monday for their home in San Diego California after visiting his mother Mrs C M Kingery and other relatives. Roy Hartman Jr and family of Rockford were Saturday guests in the home of his parents. Clarence Van Buskirk Lanark and Harvey Wagner Otawa also visited for a 6 30 dinner with Albert Hartman and wife. M and Mrs K W Senneff spent the weekend in Milwaukee Wisconsin and attended a Midwestern Shrine benefit pro football game Saturday evening.
The Quad-City 4-H beef show in Clinton Iowa crowned the Shorthorn steer of Larry Mommsen near Goose Lake as baby beef grand champion with Hereford reserve going to Charles Meyers of Miles. Carroll County youths earned several placings across weight classes and departments.
Robert Sibley family Chadwick Sinvis entered 19 head of Brown Swiss cattle for the 1954 National Dairy Cattle Congress to be held in Waterloo October 2 through 9. Exposition secretary manager E S Estes announced about 2,200 top dairy cattle from breeds including Ayrshire Guernsey Jersey and Milking Shorthorn will compete for nearly 50000 in cash prizes. Brown Swiss and Holstein-Friesians show runs October 7 and 8 with other breeds on other dates.
Springfiell Illinois September 8 Coronor William G Stratton proclaims September 25 as 11.505 Day to dedicate the captured Nazi submarine in a 2 pm ceremony. The undersea raider will be moved to a permanent site at the Museum of Science and Industry Jackson Park near 57th Street and South Lake Shore Drive for a future public opening.
Sunday dinner guests at Mr. and Mrs. Albert Queckboerner's home included Usman Bushman and family of Nixon, Robert Queckboerner and daughter of Lanark, Glen Hartman and family, Pay Queckboerner and sons, and Russell Queckboerner and sons. Also present were Mr. and Mrs. Robert Spencer and their sons, visiting in Brookville at the home of her parents Mr. and Mrs. Frank Bowers, honoring Mr. and Mrs. Harry Hufford of Arcadia California.
Republican candidates led by U S Senate hopeful Joseph T. Meek plan a Carroll County tour on Thursday September 30 with state office seekers Warren F E Wright and Vernon L Nickell. They will visit Milledgeville and Savanna for a lunch and will be joined by district incumbents Leo E Allen Franklin A Stransky Harold Widmer and local ticket holders and county officials. Local residents may obtain luncheon tickets from the precinct committeeman.
Elmer J Engleking 84 Savanna native died Sept 164 in Savanna city hospital after several days illness. Funeral in Savanna Methodist Church with Rev A Stanley Beck officiating. Survived by five sons two daughters ten grandchildren seven great grandchildren and wife who died in 1947. Also notices of Harrison Ivey and Elizabeth Murphy other local deaths.
Mr and Mrs Joe Weber planned a weekend with relatives in Chicago. Mr and Mrs Kenneth Wood of M Carroll and several others visited the Schnitzler home in Bagley Wis. Mrs Mary Friederich spent the weekend with the Friederichs. Roy Hartman attended the funeral of Peter Wendel of Freeport. Robert Cheese man and others called on nearby residents. A group picniced at Sinnissippi Park in Sterling with multiple locals present.
Dr. Lowell T. Coggeshall of the University of Chicago addresses the Cancer Society district meeting in Aurora noting 10 000 women saved from cancer death compared with a decade ago and citing advances in chemotherapy hormonal therapy radiation therapy and new equipment. Delegates nominate candidates for the Illinois Division Board and report a Florida vacation trip by local residents.
