Keim Herd Tops DHIA Unit In September

Edwin Keim & Sons Brown Swiss herd of Mt. Carroll led Carroll No. 1 West DHIA in September with 41.1 pounds butterfat from 21 cows, 981 pounds milk per cow, and a 98 pound individual butterfat record. Other top herds include Weidman & Toepfer and Judson Grove with large milk and butterfat totals. Overall unit averages were 750 pounds milk and 27 pounds butterfat across 396 cows in 19 herds, with 73 dry cows.

Delays in Corn Harvesting Affect Midwest Areas

Rainy, cool weather slowed harvesting as moisture remained high in DeKalb Tuscola Shenandoah and Fremont prompting drier loads at 24 to 28 percent moisture. Northward moisture held at 27 to 38 percent while soybeans in Illinois neared record yields and frost caused limited northern damage. The corn borer is emerging across the north central belt raising urgency to harvest promptly.

Census 1954 appoints Lee R. Gifford as crew leader

Lee R. Gifford of Carroll, Iowa, named crew leader for the 1954 Census of Agriculture. He will direct 16 enumerators to survey farms in Carroll and Daviess counties, report Oct. 4 for training in Chicago, and then recruit and train staff for the November 3 start.

Highway Mishaps Keep Sheriff on Jump Last Week

Sheriff Harry Miller and deputies investigated a string of auto accidents last week. Incidents included Harold Bast sideswiped on Route 88 near Mt Carroll with no injuries, and a load of tin rolls spilled from a trailer on Route 64 east of Mt Carroll. Fred Henze suffered a compound arm fracture near Shannon on Route 72. Ralph Mummert was injured on Route 78 south of Mt Carroll, and a two-vehicle crash at the foot of Weidman hill on Route 64 east of Savanna injured Claude Pitts and Eugene Miller.

Mrs Frank Herrick Dies After Illness in Canastota

Mrs Frank Herrick of Malvern died Friday morning at a sanitarium in Canastota New York where he had been treated about a week. Funeral services were held at 2 pm Sunday at Fuller funeral home Savannah with burial in Savannah cemetery. Survived by husband a brother and sister in Erie Pennsylvania. Carroll Youth Triumphs at Sterling Junior Baby Beef Show

Donald Dickinson, 13, won grand champion for his lightweight Angus steer at Sterling Sales on Saturday. Merle Gray of Morrison earned reserve grand with a Shorthorn. Herefords, Angus, and Shorthorns competed with 89 calves, 54 sold at auction for $26.50 to $32.50 per cwt. prizes included a purebred Duroc gilt and cash awards of 10 and 5 dollars for first and second in class.

Two men received sentences to state penitentiary after pleading guilty to armed robbery and automobile theft. William Hoover and Lawrence Hemminger faced concurrent terms. other Sterling youths sought probation. Mt Carroll Woman Louise Johnson Dies at 82

Louise Johnson 82 of Mt Carroll died Monday in a Freeport nursing home. Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Christian funeral home in Mt Carroll with Rev. John J. Main officiating and burial in Oak Hill Cemetery. Born January 22, 1872 in Mt Carroll, she married Matt Johnson in 1905 and lived in Rockford 35 years before returning to Mt Carroll after his 1944 death. Surviving are a brother and five sisters from several towns.

Mount Carroll Fire Protection District forms with district wideTaxation

At midnight September 30 the Mt. Carroll Volunteer Fire Department ended and the Mt. Carroll Fire Protection District began after a spring election. Fire Chief Arthur Zobbe remains, with little personnel change. The district expands to cover Mt. Carroll surrounding farms, adding 14 farms east of town. The new district will be funded by taxation and serves the Lanark area farms now connected to Mt. Carroll lines.
