Two soldiers alleged to have escaped Kellogg Field guardhouse were arrested in Savanna driving a stolen car. Pvt. Robert Blair and Pvt. David Durant were handed to Kellogg Field officials after Savanna police identified Durant as a holdup suspect in the Savanna cab driver case. The pair said two Fargo sisters, Beverly Burr and Audrey Burr, accompanied them to Freeport. the girls were detained but released after no charges were filed.

Oscar Weber Dies. East Moline Funeral Held for Chadwick Buyer
Oscar Weber 59, longtime Chadwick merchant, died Friday in an East Moline hospital. Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Frank Funeral Home Chadwick with Rev. Merle Hawbecker officiating. Burial followed in Chadwick Cemetery. Attendants included nephews Roy Weber, Joseph Weber, Earl Green, Harvey Seim and others. He was born January 25, 1885, lived in Carroll County most of his life, ran a Chadwick store 23 years, and is survived by a sister and several nieces and nephews. Preceded by parents, two brothers, a sister, and a half brother.

Cream on brown license plates for 1944 chosen
Illinois will issue 1944 passenger plates in cream numerals on a coffee brown background made of fiber material. Secretary of State Ed ward J Hughes office announced the change after University of Illinois colors were abandoned due to poor durability in the fiber. John Nash said the cream-on-brown scheme previously worked on steel plates in 1939 and is allowed since it doesn’t duplicate colors used in the last four years.

The Martha Montgomery estate sold at public auction on Wednesday afternoon. The 145 acre farm in Ustick township brought $52.25 per acre and was bought by Harry Montgomery. The present tenant is Alvin Keller and he will rent Harmon Stakemiller's Chadwick farm next year. The residence at 307 East Wall Street Morrison sold at the premises to Harry Montgomery for $4,000.
