Mt. Carroll high school defeated Warren high 18 to 6 Friday night in Mt. Carroll in a U S Grant conference game. Warnock Smith and Miles scored touchdowns for the victors as 18 friends and neighbors attended. The Hartman family received aid after a hay barn burn caused earlier losses.

Fifteen-Year-Old Irene Beauvais Located After Denver Absence

Irene Beauvais of Savanna has been found in Denver where she had been working in a grocery store. Her parents and Savanna police had sought her since Sept. 25 after she left Sept. 9 for Lowryfield to visit Charles Brady of Pennsylvania. Irene is 5 feet 3 inches, about 135 pounds with brown hair and eyes. Her mother is seriously ill due to the disappearance.

Dairymen to keep accurate records for fall price adjustments

Dairy farmers in Carroll county must maintain exact records of milk and butterfat sales and dairy feed purchases from October 1 to December 31 to qualify for War Food Administration three month adjustment payments. Payments, based on increased feed costs since September 1942, will range from 25 to 50 cents per hundredweight for milk and 3 to 6 cents per pound for butterfat, with adjustments for existing subsidies or hay programs.

Truck crashes culvert wall early Monday

A Wisconsin bound milk tanker from C. L. Transit Co. escaped injury when the tractor trailer struck the headwall of a cement culvert near the Salem town hall. The rear wheels were damaged and the trailer wheels ripped from the chassis. milk contents were transferred to another container and no spill occurred. A Freeport wrecking crew removed the vehicle later.

Barn Fire Claims Hartman Farm Hay Supply

Fire destroyed a large hog and cattle barn on the George H. Hartman farm south of Ideal shortly before five on Saturday. Neighbors and Chadwick Mt. Carroll firefighters fought the blaze for nearly four hours, saving adjacent buildings and keeping livestock from the barn. The hay supply burned, a granary and hoghouse were near, and crews braced walls with iron pipe as soaking saved other structures.

Anark Boy Enters Big Stock Show at Chicago Market Fat Stock

Loren Martz a 15 year old Lanark farm boy enters two Hereford baby steers for Carroll county at the Chicago Market Fat Stock and Carlot Competition to be held November 29 to December 2. The entries close November 1 for individual classes and November 20 for carrot exhibits of fat and feeder cattle sheep and swine.

Savanna Grid Squad Dominates DeWitt 26 to 0

Savanna high school opened with a 26-0 win over DeWitt on their home field. Engaldo scored three touchdowns and added an extra point, Doty found the end zone once, and Wilson kicked one extra point as Savanna extended its two year, 20 game win streak in football.

Rock Island recruiter to interview men 17 or older for Navy or Naval Reserve at the Savanna post office on Thursday October 14 at 1 p m. Women may join the WAVES or Reserve. WAVES require 20 years old and two years of high school. applicants must bring birth or baptismal certificate and parental permission. Naval Reserve may enlist men aged 38 to 50 with special skills.

Carroll county Farm Bureau starts a state drive aiming for 1 076 members by Nov 18, the date of the annual TAA meeting. As of July 31, paid members were 1 008 with 1200 workers assisting. D Brissenden spoke at Monday’s session as plans continue.

Lanark-William T. Shilling Dies in Yard Ladder Fall

County death notices report William T. Shilling 82 of Lanark died at 2:20 p.m. Sept. 30 from injuries after a ladder broke when a tree limb fell while he trimmed a neighbor’s yard. A coroner's inquest returned a verdict of death from fall injuries. Burial was in Lanark cemetery. Surviving include widow Clara Flickinger, two sons Harold and Maynard, daughter Mrs. Wales Gossard, three grandchildren, and a sister. Funeral services were held in Lanark.

Mrs Anna Gordon of Mt Carroll dies Thursday night at Caroline Mark Home where she had lived 11 years. Born July 16 1865 in Lanark she leaves one son Floyd of Galena. Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 pm in the Christian Funeral Home Mt Carroll with burial.

Three Traffic Deaths Reported in Northwestern Illinois

During September, six counties in northwestern Illinois saw four traffic fatalities, with three in Carroll county due to car crashes and two soldiers among the victims. An additional death occurred in Ogle county. In the first nine months of 1943, twenty four people died in local traffic accidents across the six counties, with Carroll Whiteside and Lee tied at five deaths each, and Jo Daviess Stephenson and Ogle tied at three each.

William Rediske Dies in Roundup Montana Veteran Operator

William Rediske died last Thursday in Roundup Montana after months of illness. He was a World War I veteran and a telegraph operator at Marcus north of Savanna. Funeral and burial were held in Roundup. Survived by his widow two daughters Dorothy Corry of Fort Benning Georgia and Mario Rediske of Billings Montana a son Cadet Raymond Rediske at Cornell College Mt Vernon Iowa and many other relatives.

Freerksen Farm Home Damaged by Fire

Fire damaged the Freerksen farm home near Shannon on September 29. Damage was estimated at about 3500. The blaze started from an overheated kitchen stove, with the ceiling igniting and flames spreading to the roof before Shannon firemen extinguished it. The Freerksen brothers have lived on the farm for 60 years.

Hoth local postmaster and port of embarkation authorities report overseas service members will miss Christmas mail goals as 15 October deadline looms. Indictments Hit Polo and Milledgeville Men

Four indictments against five defendants returned by the Whiteside county October grand jury. Harold Fredericks of Polo and Melvin Pilgrim of Milledgeville charged with forgery, plus other defendants from Dixon charged with burglary and larceny. No Marketing Quotas Proclaimed For 1943 Corn Crop

The War Food Administration says marketing quotas will not be proclaimed for the 1943 corn crop. Quotas may be proclaimed under certain Agricultural Adjustment Act conditions, but those conditions do not exist this year. The September crop report uses the October 1 carryover estimate to show a total corn supply for 1943-44 of 417,500,000 bushels, yet the volume prevents quota proclamation and no referendum will be held this year.
