Babson warns inflation as a spreading epidemic risking deaths like smallpox. He urges prudent investment, favors short term war bonds and real assets, warns inflation harms railroads utilities and employment, and advises against borrowing. He corrects past wartime reemployment timing for veterans.
Preston Prairie Dulcie Petty visited Wallace Williams while Mr Pyse remained nearby. The Etta Horner home entertained the Harvey Downings and Paul Metz family.
Quad County 4-H Baby Beef show at Clinton crowned winners with Benjamin A. Grove of Bryant winning grand championship on a 925 pound Hereford and Lois Mommsen of Miles taking reserve. Entrants from Carroll and Whiteside received numerous blue red and white ribbons across Shorthorn and Hereford classes with multiple youths named from Savanna Milledgeville Lanark Fulton Prophetstown Morrison and more.
Charles W. Cole Jr., 39, of Dixon, son of Charles W. and Lettie Cole of Lanark, died instantly September 15 when a railroad car on which he rode derailed at Green River ordnance plant and crushed him. An inquest was held in Dixon. funeral was in Lanark with Rev. George Parker Rossman officiating. Surviving: wife Catherine Maloney Cole, parents, brothers Ray Seymour, John in Aleutians, and Paul of Lanark. one brother Roy preceded him in death.
In an election last week Woodland township voted to borrow 3000 to build and repair bridges and culverts. Only 89 voters participated with 32 in favor and seven against the measure.
County Clerk W M Nipe issued a marriage license to Walter I Hicks of Los Angeles and Genevieve F Kilanchfield of Savanna. A new, larger safe was installed in the County Treasurer Frank L Ross office, with workmen facing a height clearance challenge. Sheriff Eber Shepherd traveled to Car l otin NL to recover a stolen car and the suspect arrested there.
Savanna high school grid squad defeated Stockton High 19 to 4 Friday night to extend their winning streak to 18 games. Starting lineup included Adams, Mc Intyre, DeFranco, Truninger, Brown, Nowak, Miles, Elder, Tucebat, Doty and Engaldo as Lyons High of Clinton, Ia visits Savanna tomorrow for an Illowa league matchup.
Carroll County Red Cross chapter voted 200 from county fund for hospital production and accepted a quota of 400 navy kitbags to be filled locally. Home nursing circles planned for October with books ordered. Chadwick branch organizers discussed Junior Red Cross formation. Attendees included Mrs. W. H. Taylor and others from Chadwick.
The Illinois Supreme Court ruled retailers cannot add sales tax as a separate charge. They must embed the 2 percent levy in the listed price, as in the People's Drug Co. case. Retailers may not pass tax as a line item. a $1 item would show $1.02 to collect the tax.
The Illinois Department of Conservation released 65 000 small four inch bass into Carroll Creek Johnson Creek East Plum River and Elkhorn Creek last week to bolster local fish populations.
Thomson reports Mr. and Mrs. Henry Eubanks of Milledgeville were guests Sunday of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Robinson and family along with Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey Clarke of Clinton and Mr. and Mrs. Lee Sweeley and daughter. Also visiting were Oscar Sweeley of Lanark and Mr. and Mrs. Albert Warfield of Savanna.
Fall outlook meeting on September 28 at 7 45 p m in the Farm Bureau Auditorium Mt Carroll will cover livestock production trends feed supplies marketing outlook and economic phases for swine dairy poultry and beef. Shannon High School organized class officer elections last week. Officers elected include senior class president Bill Scharman with Kenneth Moll as vice president and Kenneth Hoffman as secretary and treasurer. Junior class president Robert Shirk and secretary treasurer Betty Rodermel. sophomore president Kenneth Rausch with Loren DeWall as VP and Iva Kampmeier as secretary treasurer. Freshman president Cecelia Stevens with Delores Picking as VP and Phyllis Peters as secretary treasurer.
Carroll county buyers Towland and Frey of Lanark sent 29 head of prime Hereford steers to the Tuesday Chicago Stock Yards sale selling at 16.90 per hundredweight averaging 1136 pounds. Hog and steer prices also climbed with hogs reaching 15.40 per cwt and steers hitting 16.95 per cwt as new seasonal highs. Sunday visits noted with Mrs. Wm Schleuning at the Henry Schleuning home.
A federal ruling prohibits hunting migratory game birds from motor boats or boats with an outboard attached. Shooting is allowed only after the outboard is detached and stored, and cripple retrieval may occur with the motor attached if the boat is not used for shooting. The ruling allows motor boats for transport to meeting points.
Public wartime appeal promotes Series E Bonds as safe investments with redemption options and guaranteed repayment by the United States. It emphasizes buying at least one extra $100 Bond, explains denominations and 75 percent price, and notes 10 year maturity with interest and immediate redemption after 60 days.

Two soldiers from the Savatina ordnance depot died after their car plunged from a railroad viaduct in east Savannah about 9 p m. Cpl John G Peak 24 of Milwaukee and Sg t Thomas W Cauley 27 of Milwaukee were members of the military police detachment. Cauley died at Savanna hospital. Peak died at Milwaukee. Funeral rites held Wednesday. Cauley survived by wife. both bodies sent to families in Wisconsin.
The Food Distribution Order No. 75 interpretation allows any person who has produced or fed livestock on their premises for 60 days to slaughter for home consumption without a permit. Slaughter is prohibited for resale, and the 60 day period can be met on urban or rural premises with enough weight gain.
Retail and wholesale motor truck deliveries nationwide will be sharply curtailed effective 12:01 am Monday Oct 11. The ODT director Joseph H Eastman announced bans on retail package deliveries under five pounds or 60 inches in girth, Sunday deliveries except ice mink or cream, and weekly limits on beverages tobacco confectioneries ice cream sherbets magazines and cut flowers. Wholesale deliveries of many products must also be reduced to comply.
Mt. Carroll high school fell 20 to 6 to Polo in the season opener. Polo scored in the first and third quarters, Mt. Carroll's only TD coming in the second period. Next schedule shows Mt. Carroll hosting Mt. Morris tomorrow night with several upcoming road games listed.
Twenty yearling Herefords from Riley Lotzbaugh near Lanark topped the Chicago market at 16.80 per hundredweight with steers averaging 1170 pounds. Two heifers sold at 14 while a 1080 pound steer belonging to Marcia Poquet brought 16.25, much of the proceeds going to a war bond for Marcia. Lotzbaugh plans to keep about 100 head in the feed lots as he recalls buying the cattle in December and feeding them through winter on a 50 50 grain mix. Mrs. Marie Miller has improved after a hospital stay and returned home.
