The Franklin Community Sewing Circle met last Friday at Mrs. Harold Hines home in Sterling. Alma Bolinger led devotion and read Psalm 28. Visitors Mrs. Ward Leach and Mrs. Teresa Rickless attended among 19 members. Supplies and clothing go to Philadelphia via the American Friends Committee. Next meeting October 8 at Mt. Carmel home.
Chadwick residents Mr and Mrs Jay Kurth and family and Mr and Mrs Fred Ernst of Savanna joined Mr and Mrs Dean Hafer for a Thursday fish fry. Don Harris visited Sunday with Mr and Mrs Dp L Plumer in Rochelle. Arnold Blakeslee S A on leave from Atlantic City NJ spent Sunday with Mr and Mrs Ed Brown and will report there Saturday.
Ed Dauphin chairman announces ballots mailed Sept 10 1954 for Community ASC committeemen across Carroll County with candidate lists for Cherry Grove Shannon Elkhorn Grove Wysox Fair Haven Freedom Rock Creek Lima Mr Carroll Salem Savanna Washington and Woodland. Ballots must be postmarked by Sept 17 or returned in person by Sept 17 with eligibility checks conducted at the county office.
Under two national trained Junior Leaders 136 Scouts from U. S. Grant Council learned patrol skills at Canyon Camp September 10 to 12. Instructors Chuck Boebel Stan Hall Kent Smith and others led sessions on Troop organization leadership cooking camping and hiking.
About 160 head of blue ribbon beef cattle including 120 baby beeves and 40 purebred heifers will compete at Liverview Stadium Clinton Iowa in the 20th Quad County 4-H show. Judge Fred Francis of Wilmington Ill leads Friday events with judging starting at 1 PM DST and grand champion finals around 8 15 PM.
The Weber and Schreiner families visited Mrs Sophia Schreiner in Mt Carroll on her 82nd birthday. She has been bedridden for five years. Other lists include Allen Airhart and others in Woodland and York communities. Virginia Mae Adrian and Henry Gene Winter wed at the First English Evangelical church Freeport in a Sept 3 ceremony. Rose Marie Aitken and Milo Reed marry in Savanna First Methodist Church. Lucille Gilman Bragg announces marriage to Dr. Edmund Flexman in Freeport. Relatives attend and futures include new homes and honeymoons.
Leonard Brandenburg of Mill Edgeville was named a winner in the 1984 Illinois Sheep Production Contest. He ranked in the 26 to 7h head division, as six county cooperators participated. Other high scorers included Allen Smith of Chadwick Lester Kandlehner and Forrest Beyer of Mt. Carroll. Certificates will be presented. Flocks were judged by lamb and wool output per flock.
County board approves township levies voted last April for general relief and for road and bridge projects. Carroll County chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will hold a meeting Saturday September 18 in Mt Carroll with Mrs Fred Rhodes Jr hosting. State regent Mrs Henry C. Warner will be the guest speaker.
The Rein & Dahl construction firm of Stoughton Wisconsin secured a 175 026 01 dollar county road contract for a blacktop project in northern Carroll County. The route starts near Schmaling Corner and runs north crossing Plum River toward the Stephenson County line aiming to bypass floods.
John Mest 82 a former Chadwick resident died suddenly July 27 in Riverview. Funeral services were held in Chadwick with Rev. W Chester Jostrom officiating. Burial followed in Chadwick cemetery. Surviving are his second wife Isabel Sherman two brothers two sisters and twelve nieces and nephews. He was born in Albany New York and lived much of his life in Illinois operating a cigar shop in Chadwick.
Merton Schroeder, 22, died from a brain injury after trading cars with his brother Perry and crashing near Sabula. Cousin James Schroeder, 18, suffered neck injuries, in fair condition. Perry had minor injuries when Merton’s car overturned near Miles, Ta. Coroner ruled accidental death.
J W Erdmier of the Joes ASC office announces a new ruling allowing farmers who exceeded their 1954 corn allotments to adjust acreage down to the allotment. Unharvested excess acreage not kept as grain silage or fodder and not left standing after Sept 30 1954 will not count as corn acreage. Farmers must act by Sept 20 and contact Mt Carroll ASC for details.
Regular and supplemental panels named for the November term of circuit court by the county board of supervisors at the September meeting. Lists include Washington Robert McIntyre and others for regular panel and Washington Mildred Milligan among supplemental picks with numerous named townships and jurors.
L R Schubert of Stockton, the drivers license examiner for the area, will not be in Mt Carroll Monday or Tuesday September 20-21 but will be available the following week September 27-28. Donald Rife of Lanark was fined 10 dollars plus costs by Justice Loren Cates on an assault and battery charge brought by his wife. Licenses to wed issued by County Clerk W M Nipe include Donald Kille and Barbara Jean Crist of Mt Carroll and Milo Reed of Sabula Iowa with Rose Marie Aitken of Savanna. Niles Hechtner and Emily P Coddington of Princeton. Real estate transfers list multiple property deeds among local residents in Mt Carroll, Lanark, Savanna, and surrounding townships.
Carroll County NEATHS Mt Carroll Albert H Van Buskirk, 66, died Sunday night at his home. Funeral services were held 2 p m Wednesday at the Christian funeral home with Rev H Rowsey of Mill edgeville officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill cemetery Mt Carroll. He was born near Mt Carroll Sept 8 1888 in Salem township, married Mabel Gump June 20 1916. Surviving: his wife, two daughters Dorothy Sucher and Helen Smith of Mill edgeville, two grandchildren, two sisters Josephine Coady and Lucy Poffenberger, Mt Carroll, two brothers George Shannon and Harry Freeport. His parents, a brother Henry, and a sister preceded him in death.
The Clinton Symphony Orchestra invites instrumentalists from Carroll County and nearby areas to join. Rehearsals are every Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in Clinton High School, under conductor Lowell P. Adams. Openings include clarinet through percussion. First concert date to be announced. Ed Boelkins and Bertha Boelkins of Fulton visited Clinton residents.
