A Dutch couple won first prize for best parade costume at Fulton Fall Festival last weekend. Girls wore Holland replicas and clomped in wooden shoes. Cathy Kane and Carol Sikkema portrayed a maiden and a gentleman. Prizes went to best costumes, pony cart, pets, and decorated bicycles. Judges included Everett Streit, Harvey Shawver, Morrison, and Elynor Stagg.
The Legion Auxiliary will hold a food sale starting at 11 oclock Saturday in the Utilities building. Donors are asked to label dishes and tins with names so items can be returned to their owners.
Five youths faced charges after attempting thefts at Thomson melon stands. Marvin Morris 15 of Clinton and four Morrison High School boys were caught or identified by farmers and deputies. Morris posted bond after a larceny hearing. the others paid fines of $5 plus costs and spent a night in jail. one was released on $250 bond.
On Sept. 5 the Sandridge school club Hap py Sandburrs elected President Julia Fedderson and Secretary John Fedderson. A homecoming is set for Sept. 28 at the schoolhouse with prizes for farthest travel, oldest teacher, and oldest pupil.
Thomson softball team won twice at Old Mill Park in Savannah. Friday they beat McConnel 16 to 3 with Coon as winning pitcher and scoring in every inning. Sunday night Thomson defeated Sod 5 to 2 in the second game.
The American Legion announced a raffle giving away a new RCA Radio. It is on display at the Holland pool hall in Thomson and details are available from any Legion member.
Thomson briefs list visits and gatherings involving families from Bur bank California Walnut Mt. Carroll Milledgeville Clinton Chadwick Stockton and Elizabeth. Residents attend weekend dinners calls and Sunday visits at homes of May Stade Wilt Stainbrook and others.
The State Department of Public Health will bring a portable chest X-ray unit to Mount Carroll at the Utilities Building on Sept 23 24 25. Appointments are available 10 to 12 and 1 to 4 each day. letters with appointments were mailed, others may be accepted with physician approval and no charge.
Walter O Hoover 68 a Milwau kee railroad engineer died at 8250 am Saturday in Savanna city hospital. Funeral 2 pm Tuesday Fuller funeral home Savanna with burial in Savanna cemetery. Born Dec 25 1974 in Milledgeville he worked as an engineer 38 years. Survived by daughter Mrs Irvin Shrake Savanna five sons Jesse and Dan Savanna Harold Davenport Floyd and Kenneth Bensonville three brothers John Mt Carroll Jason Freeport Elmer Monticello la and a sister Mrs Fred Schneider Mt Carroll
Mrs Orville Shidler 74 died near Lauiwik after an illness of about fifteen years. Born March 12 1874 on a farm west of Milledgeville she was married March 3 to Orville Shidler. Survived by husband a daughter Mrs Lewis Brunner Lanark a granddaughter Fairy Brunner a sister Mrs Mary Landner Bristol Pa and a brother William Fierheler Dakota Funeral services at Cherry Grove church were conducted Sunday afternoon by Rev Merle Hinenbeck with burial in Junction Cemetery Pallbearers were nephews Wesley Henry Will Charles John and Lewis Miller flower committee Mrs Ed Bast and Mrs Murray Garst.

Glenn Zugschwerdt of Mt. Carroll was elected chairman of Carroll district as delegates from Thomson Savanna Hanover and Galena met at Smith cafe in Savanna. J Lael Speer presided and reports for the past year were approved. plans for Camporee at Palisades State Park October 4 and 5 with a court of honor were set. Ladies’ night will be observed November 17 at Hanover.
Merle Gaar attends Frances Shimer Junior College in Mount Carroll where the campus remains open this season to veterans from Carroll County and nearby communities.
County clerk reports marriage licenses for Arnold B. Abraham and Hazel Irene Stroup of Lanark. Judge Leon A. Zick granted four Savanna area divorces including Lucile F P Moore from Owen S Moore for desertion and Lernice Shafer from Charles Shafer for cruelty. Velma Leavens and Augustus Leavens obtained a divorce, and Frank Herbert Jr. was granted a divorce from Betty Herbert on desertion.
Eugene Johnson 21 of Savanna received a year of probation after pleading guilty to larceny and had been jailed seven months for stealing tools from Mr Carroll. Motions to quash indictments against Frank Gierens 60 of Dubuque Jr and Nicholas Fereneak 33 of Chi uve were held in county jail since arrest. June 12 two slot machines were taken from a tavern north of Savanna and charges filed in Carroll county circuit court by Ralph Eyton. hearings set for next Monday.
The state auditor reports August payments to dependent children under aid to families in Illinois totaled 55,439 children benefiting. This is down 13,403 from July. Carroll County had 10 dependents receiving 902 dollars and Whiteside County 154 dependents receiving 4,155 dollars.
Ivan DeSpain a 16 year old of Mt Carroll was treated at Savanna City hospital for a brain concussion bruises and cuts from a fight with Merle Potter or Joe J Spencer. He is to be dismissed tonight. Potter and Spencer spent the night in jail and were released after a state attorney visit. Each posted a 15 dollar bond to cover hospital and medical expenses.
A Chadwick man was indicted by a grand jury on a manslaughter charge. The report notes a sharp cool-down early in the week with temperatures dipping below 50 as smoke from furnaces signaled fires. Strong west winds made outdoor conditions brisk despite milder afternoons.
Black Oak Grange will hold its annual Booster Night Friday September 26 at 8 oclock in Grange hall Chadwick. A good program is planned and refreshments will be served by the Grange ladies at night’s end. State Rep John K Morris of Chadwick will discuss Farm Legislation in our Capitol and What’s Happening to it and R T Sieloff of Iowa will speak on Farm Organizations and Farm Individuals.
Carroll County Home Bureau gathered 118 members and 12 guests at the Mt Carroll Methodist church for its first annual meeting. Mrs Eugene Murray was re elected president for a two year term amid reports from officers and chairmen and installation of new directors G W Wolf and Merle ielster.
Colby Loechel, 26, of Chadwick, faces a manslaughter indictment returned by a Carroll county grand jury. He was held on a $5000 bond after arrest Monday evening. later released when a real estate bond was posted by his parents. The case stems from an August 12 crash near Argo-Fa that killed Mr and Mrs Frank Warfield as Loechel’s car left the highway and struck them in their yard. he allegedly drove drunk at high and reckless speeds.
The Y C H 8S class elections held Sept 12 produced presidents for Freshman Jeanne Ellett Sophomore Fay Ashby and Senior Sylvia Dykstra. Seniors also chose a class play The Daffy Dills to be staged Nov 7. The annual staff was named with Leota Housenga A Lberta Johnson and Lola Grim in key roles.
Miss Nellie Parsons, living with Mr. and Mrs. Charles Sack, marked her 92nd birthday on Wednesday receiving 25 congratulatory cards. Health and cheer mark the occasion as friends hosted a Thursday afternoon gathering with several local residents and relatives.
The Baptist Ladies' Aid met in the church basement for an all day session with a noon potluck. Members quilted and sewed carpet rags while a pink and blue shower honored Mrs. Delbert Gaar with many gifts.
Richard Kane, son of Mr and Mrs Leland Kane of Fulton, became suddenly ill last Thursday and was rushed to Jane Lamb Hospital where his condition is reported as poor.
