Babson Park Massachusetts September 5 A survey shows most consumers favor advertising overall but dislike some presentation aspects and praise visual over audio ads. Critics urge better radio quality and possible boycotts while noting color ads boost reader impact and newspapers offer lasting reach.
Three new establishments start on the main street within the last two weeks. The Sandwich Shop run by Mr and Mrs Garland Harris is leased to Harris's brother in law and sister Mr and Mrs Osmund Carlson who will specialize in sandwiches ice cream and drinks. Kyle's Tavern by Kyle McGinnis opens in the Bolhouse building after repairs and redecoration. Ed Drake opens his tavern this week featuring chrome bar stools and booths. Mr and Mrs Edward French and Chiaren dined with Mr and Mrs Harold Tomman and family in Milledgeville on Sunday.
Vocational agriculture students and 4-H members Chadwick and Thomson enter calves in the 13th Quad County 4-H Baby Beef and Purebred Heifer show to be held in Clinton Iowa September 12 and 13. Entries include Vernon Adolph Jr. Hereford steer grand champion at Savanna event, plus Angus and Hereford calves. Judging starts 1 p m Friday with a banquet at Lafayette hotel 7 p m. Saturday features a calf parade at 10 a m and auction sale at 1 p m.
Carroll county vocationally dairy and livestock judging teams traveled to Urbana to compete in the state livestock judging contest held at the University of Illinois Saturday morning.
A Mt. Carroll justice bound over Fred Thrasher 62 Savanna on an operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated charge after a Route 64 crash. James Lietzen 21 Stockton posted a $500 cash bond after a larceny binding. Kipnis Mt. Carroll fined $100 for junk dealer warehouse violation and plans appeal. Multiple property transfers announced for Mt. Carroll Savanna Lanark and nearby towns.
Martha Bielema of Fulton visits with daughter and family Andrew Houzenga from Monday to Friday. Norman French Jr and family spend days in Chicago. Diane French visits aunt Mrs Edward Smaltz. Clifford Faber hosts Fulton Sunday dinner. Fred Doden hosts Virgil Herrick family Galena Merle Doden Morrison and family William Green and family Argo.
Chadwick and Pnomson vocational agriculture classes visited Clarence Van Buskirk's purebred Hereford farm north of Chadwick last Thursday to study the beef cattle business and view prize show animals. Demonstrations covered grooming show animals, feeding, and management for a beef calf project. The group judged a class of bulls and heifers and discussed official placings before Van Buskirk heads to Henry Illinois and the Illinois Hereford Breeders show in Normal on September 16 with several bulls and heifers consignments.
County 4-H project honor members in clothing, food, and room improvement were chosen at the Mt. Carroll meeting on Sept. 4. The girls were rated on work quality, participation in 4-H activities, and community, church, school, and home responsibilities along with record books.
Funeral rites were held for Robert W. Sigfus 68 who died Sept 3 at his Savanna home with burial in Savanna cemetery. He was born April 4 1870 in Iowa and lived in Savanna. survived by two sons four daughters a sister and many grandchildren. Infant John Guinther son of Charles and Mrs Guinther died at Mt Carroll and funeral services were held in Mt Carroll with burial at Chadwick.
Superintendents and principals from Carroll County gathered Tuesday night in the office of county superintendent L. E. Brudi to discuss plans for the year, secure more supplies, and renew acquaintances. The group meets at regular intervals through the school year.
Mrs. Pearl Gilson was honored at a birthday dinner hosted Sunday by her parents Mr. and Mrs. Carl Robinson. Attending were sisters and families from Clinton Blackhawk Village Milledgeville and Oregon Wisconsin visitors Mr. and Mrs. J F Gallagher and son. Deanna Gilson, the honoree's daughter, also attended.
A 25 cow Stransdale farm No. 2 herd tops Carroll County Dairy Herd Improvement with 1068 pounds milk and 34.6 pounds fat. John Derrer and Son had the high August cow at 1996 pounds milk and 71.8 fat. Other top herds include Leslie Durwood and Stanley Finifrock. Month average 656 pounds milk 25.4 fat from 472 cows across 24 herds, 88 dry. 14 unprofitable cows sold to butcher.
Allen Dykstra on furlough from Korea visits siblings Delbert Nelson and Kathryn Dykstra of Argo and brothers Siebert and John of Fulton. A surprise party for John Hook includes many relatives and friends. Delbert Nelson injured by a cow. stitches required. Local farming and road work update with Argo-Fa highway progress.
Three youths from Mt Carroll and Stockton were bound over to the grand jury on larceny charges after admitting taking a truck spotlight. Bond set at 500 dollars each. they remain in county jail. Victim neighbor Mrs. Floyd Lego reported seeing two men in the yard before midnight.
A Thomson fire committee reports a 1947 two ton extra duty truck is being equipped in Flint Michigan and will arrive in Thomson about. The $5800 model will have a streamlined cab and be fully equipped. About $1300 remains to complete the payment. Donors include John Regan Dick Williams Mrs. Bristol Don Hickey Robert Lewis Henry C Bielema Garrett Housenga Roy Houghton Ralph Huggins and others, bringing total donations to 4451.
Teachers assigned to six rural Carroll County schools after the Aug publication include Oak Grove with Mrs. Vivian M. Chapman. Hanover with Mrs. Vera Garst. Lanaikh with Miller and Mrs. Betty W. Shoup. Daggetts with Virgil Mielke. Savanna with Emerson and Betty Wagner. Chadwick with Mrs. Mildred F. Jecklin. Fair Haven Center at Chadwick.
Mr William Bright and daughters and Mr and Mrs Knorr of Lanark called on Mr and Mrs Kyle Rawlins and Mr and Mrs Paul V Will. The Will couple have returned from a week's wedding trip in northern Town and reside at Blackhawk Village near Hanover. Mr and Mrs Harry Wilkerson and family visited her parents Mr and Mrs Shirley Stage near Fulton. Ted Storm Bud and Ann of Wacker were Sunday dinner guests of Mr and Mrs Willis Stage.
The season began Monday with weak scores as few bowlers had played since May and heat dampened interest. Fathered oroharing posted 204 in his first game while Brad complained of tough luck. The Farmers team is short a man and may seek a temporary bowler, with Sack and McBride beating them 2 games to none. Mr and Mrs Paul Heusinkveld hosted Dr and Mrs H J Heusinkveld of Clinton for Mrs Heusinkveld's birthday, while Mrs Clara Switzer visited friends.
At the 5th annual Illinois Statewide Public Health meeting in Chicago, discussion focused on a full time health department serving two or more small counties. Carroll and Jo Daviess counties attracted interest with local officials and health leaders in attendance including Dr Ruth Church Miss Robina Walters Margaret Handlin and several county supervisors and physicians.
Carroll county supervisors approved regular and supplemental grand juror panels for the November circuit court term. The list includes jurors from Washington, Woodland, Freedom, Cherry Grove, Shannon, Lima, Rock Creek, Salem, Mt. Carroll, Savanna, York, Fair Haven, Wysox and Elkhorn Grove, with many named individuals.
Delegates from Carroll County travel to Bloomington this week for the Rural Youth camp. Organizers expect workshops and activities aimed at leadership and community service.

Dick to begin fall term at University of Missouri. Several visits and family events span Fulton Rock Falls Morrison Albany and Savannah with birthdays anniversaries and a 92 year old passing.
County board of supervisors approved general township and road and bridge levies for Carroll county townships at the September session. Most townships raise taxes from last year with Woodland the sole exception for general levies. Road and bridge levies rise in 13 of 14 towns, some by only a few dollars. A county levy was postponed to an adjourned session. Jurors pay is set at seven dollars per day for grand and petit jurors after a failed higher-rate motion.
Friday event at the Seim home for Miss Blanche Seim, soon to wed Robert Ludwig of Trenton Michigan. Games and contests awarded prizes, guests listed, gifts given for her new home.
Friday evening guests at Earl and (Mrs) Voss included Charles Voss and family and Marvin Voss from Fulton and Lloyd Johnson from Argo Fa. Thomson area families extended visits and guests over the weekend with St. Ores Renner Sack and Spiering tied to local households. A note urges voters to support funds for a new grade school on September 15 and to back Thomson kids with the project.
