Hannibal Missouri promotes Mark Twain historic sites and nearby Dickson Mounds at Lewiston with details on the Mark Twain Cave and Twain boyhood home. The piece surveys Riverside park monuments, the Mark Twain Memorial Bridge, and Mound Builder burial sites with questions about origins and daily life of the First Americans.
The Parent-Teachers Association held its September meeting at the high school gym with a reception for teachers. The club voted to join local groups in helping at the U S O center in Savannah, and shifted monthly meetings to the third Thursday. Religious education in Thomson schools was discussed and a social hour followed the program led by Mrs E O Hemmer and committee.
Preston Prairie reports new fi los for Charles Kessler Wallace Williams and Glen Bickelhaupt. Oscar Brown of Chadwick called here Thursday. Mrs Donald Buckwalter welcomed a daughter on Sept 12. Mrs Ross Boylan and Mrs Omar Ketchum visited Polo homes Wednesday and Thursday. Blanche Beck departed for Los Angeles to visit her brother.
Savanna tennis reports show Thomson Consolidated School instructor Miss Louella Weidman and Dr. L B Hussey winning the county tournament mixed doubles 7-5 6-2 at Old Mill park. Ferguson and Hussey took men's doubles 6-0 9-7. Louella and Louise Weidman won women's doubles 7-5 6-2. Savanna players captured all titles.
Thomson briefs note multiple moves and enrollments from California to Illinois and Florida. Elynor Stagg heads to the University of Miami in Coral Gables as a junior, while Mrs. Chittenden enrolls in Home Economics at the University of Maryland. Robert Demaree earns a lieutenant promotion at Camp Croft, and Sgt. Paul Rice relocates to Los Angeles from Fort Sill. Community updates include visits and gatherings among Thomson residents and friends in nearby towns.
The Women’s club plans a farewell party for Mrs Glenn Demaree before she moves to Dixon on October 1. Committee chair Mrs J Y Stickell and members Mrs Chas McGinty and Mrs David Switzer organize a music program memory album and stunts followed by a buffet luncheon.
Thomson and Argo Methodist churches schedule Sunday worship and Sunday school with sermons on Using What We Have and World Wide Communion. Bottled by notes, the Ideal district Parkhill pupils list names, bus transport by Mr. Dambman, and a Savanna weekend visit by Janibelle Beck.

George Gilbert of Freeport, recently operated on, has returned home improving. Mrs Paul Vance back in Cedar Rapids after St Luke's hospital release. George Hicks released from Morrison hospital after short stay. Johnny Brown released from Fort hospital Fort Bragg.
Miss Frances Brudi daughter of Mr and Mrs Harry Brudi Mt Carroll married Har ry Neuschwanger at the Methodist parsonage Kahoka Missouri in a 10 45 am ceremony Rev Monroe Peterzon officiated The couple’s attendants were Mr and Mrs Eugene Dayboll of Savanna Neuschwanger is a farmer and grandson of Mr and Mrs Frank Smith The bride attended Mt Carroll High School.
Chester Algoe a member of the U S Army motorcycle cavalry was honored by relatives at Kendall Young park. He had built a racing reputation with wins in St Paul and Beaver Dam before the war paused contests. He competed in the county fair races last fall and was edged by pros after turning the local track in under 34 seconds. Kyle P McGinnis now stationed at Tacoma has been sent to Bowling Hill Virginia.
Mrs Lyle Greeley hosted the Teachers Reading Circle at her home Tuesday. The group, smaller this year, discussed beginning chapters of three books and noted local school arrangements. Refreshments were served as members listed include Roland Starck Parkhill and Mrs Harvey Seim Oil Valley. The next meeting is set for Thursday Oct 8 with Mrs Stage.
The August library report shows adult fiction circulation 109 and classed books 22, magazines 40, and one new subscriber registration. In the juvenile department story books circulate 106 and classed books 7, with magazines 34. Grace Strauch serves as librarian.
County seeks new members for its ration board and invites interest in first aid classes. Contact Arthur Pape or Mrs. J D Morse for details. Meetings run at Savannah with Dr Chipman as instructor, first session Monday evening September 21.
Plans to increase the War Price and Ration Board to at least 12 persons are underway as officials are asked to submit names. Charles Kingery of Mr. Carroll, chairman of the county civilian defense council, says the enlarged board will improve representation and handle new duties including gasoline and mileage rationing.
A farewell covered dish dinner and social hour will follow Sunday school at Community Church for Mr and Mrs Demaree and Ruth as they move from Thomson to Dixon. Each family brings own dishes and silverware. All friends invited.
1st Lieut. M. K. Brookstra departed Tuesday for Midland Texas to join the Midland Army Flying School where he will serve in the dental corps.
Mrs. Helen Rice reports her son Pfc. Elwin L. Rice married Virginia Gregory five weeks ago in California. Rice is now stationed at San Francisco.
Monday evening supper guests included Mrs. Gerald Brown with Mrs. Albert Herbig and Mrs. Paul Melendy of Savanna. Various locals and visiting relatives were noted in Clinton including moves, weekend visits, and farm equipment purchases.
Mrs. Herbert St. Ores hosted a Friday afternoon party for Janice St. Ores fifth birthday. Guests enjoyed ice cream angel food cake doll face cookies and candy. Attending were Nancy Wilt Marilyn Bolhous Carol Williams Markis Delos Zenk Betty Harold Blodgett Joyce Carol Sack Ruth Demaree and Arla St. Ores.
Mrs R J Houghton hosted the Argo 500 meeting with results: Mrs Verne Kauffman won first, Mrs Fred Nipe second, Mrs Ralph Stearns third. Evelyn Welch to entertain Sept 24. Argo Home Ee club set Sept 18 at the Methodist church. Thomson 500 group meets today with Mrs Beas Carpenter. Chat-a-While to meet Sept 26. hostess to be announced. Savanna Reading Circle includes Mildred Withhart guest at East Savanna home. Royal Neighbors met with Mrs J Y Stickel. Girl Scouts held meeting in library basement Sept 15. Eleanor Stearns earned three badges, Barbara Frazier four, others one or two.
Alma Robinson and Letha Gaar were chosen to represent York Community High School at East Bay Camp on Lake Bloomington, near Bloomington, Aug 27 to 30. They stayed in cabins with about 60 girls, attended daily meetings on crafts, folk dancing, orchestra, glee club, tennis and swimming, and brought back ideas for the local club. Arla Brown attended last year as the first participant. The four day camp replaces the fall conference for Vocational Homemaking Teachers. tuition was paid by the Busy Bee club.
Mrs Blanche Beck attended as a guest at the Wayne Ashby home on Friday. Ford Grim joined a Mt Carroll picnic for mail carriers at Point Rock park on Wednesday. Arnold Alm and wife marked their 15th wedding anniversary Saturday. Eldon Hickey arrived from Tose Mount Minnesota to spend two weeks with relatives. Sunday guests at John Cooper’s included Ben Jokers and Ernest Gunkel of Sterling. Willard Hartman family moved from Fulton to a newly purchased house in East Savanna. Richard Badtke dined with Frank Badtke in Rock Island with Mrs Badtke returning home. Sunday supper guests at Gerald Brown’s included Warren Green of Mt Carroll, James Green and sons, and Mrs Wm Baker now back from Clinton to her parents. Corp Wilbur Stickekll visited Boston en route to an unknown destination. Mrs Elmer Davis and daughter left for Fort Stockton Texas after a week with local relatives.
A Sunday gathering at Old Mill park in Savanna honored 1st Lieut. M. E. Brookstra who left Tuesday for Midland Texas where he will be stationed with the dental corps. Attending were Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Dresbach and family of Mr. Carroll, Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Groharing and sons, Mr. and Mrs. John Carpenter and family, Mrs. Adeline Groharing, Mrs. Brookstra and the honoree.
Parents report son Eoa Hook has landed in England and is well. He praises the country as fine and sends regards from his travel.
Mr and Mrs Ernest Tousley welcomed a daughter Mary Ann born Friday night at Jane Lamb hospital. Mr and Mrs John Braden of Decatur welcomed a son born Aug 14. Braden’s wife Helen Lillie is the daughter of Rev Asa Lillie a former Thom son Baptist pastor. Mr and Mrs Harry Holy of Chestnut Park Savanna welcomed a daughter born Saturday morning at Savanna City hospital, weighing seven pounds six ounces. Mr and Mrs Lane Brearton of Chicago welcomed a daughter born recently at St Josephs hospital Chicago. Brearton is the son of Mr and Mrs J L Brearton of Savanna.
The Women’s Society of Christian Service met Sept. 16 with 21 members and one visitor. They planned a sewing session for carpet rags Sept. 21 and voted to sponsor a daily devotional volume for a soldier, hoping other churches and groups will join the effort.
In a marathon baseball clash at Chadwick Park atmosphere resembled a horse shoe game era. Spring Valley Aces rally to beat Rock Falls 12 to 11 after 11 innings amid rain and crowded, lively chatter.
Argo F A George Miller of Batavia and Harold Miller of Geneva visited recently in the James Mummert home. Mr and Mrs Harry Householder visited Savanna with their children. Donald Householder left for induction. Miss Arlene Smith is employed at Fred Smith store. Dan Emnyre rents farms nearby for the year. Mrs John Faber is improving from burns. Lynn Krempel, infant son, was dismissed from Savanna hospital and taken home.
