William Hoover and Ralph Rife, two Lanark youths, were arrested after allegedly taking part in the armed robbery of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Shore in Shannon last Monday night. About 70 dollars and undisclosed change were taken. Both youths were held on armed robbery and stolen property charges with bonds set at 5000 and 2000 respectively, and Hoover remained jailed after failing to post.
Marriage licenses issued last week from the county clerk to Thomas Johnson and Mary Jane Smith of Sabula Iowa and Duane Lotz and JoAnn Bates of Lanark Illinois were recorded. Plea deals saw Llewelyn Cook and Kenneth Haggett, railroad workers, plead guilty to burglary and receive 30 days in county jail with credit for time served. James Kye of Savanna was detained on suspicion of taking four hams from a railroad car awaiting formal charges. Roger Mummert of Freeport was released after a assault with a deadly weapon arrest due to unavailable witnesses. several property transfers and another notice of potential information filing in county court were noted.
Milledgeville services are set for Mrs Jenilee Koehler Prowant of Twenty-nine Palms California who died September 9. The Assembly of God church in Rock Falls will host a 2 30 p m ceremony with Rev Harry Lutz officiating. Burial follows in Chadwick cemetery. Visitation at Woodin funeral home after 4 p m Wednesday and at the church after 11 a m Thursday. She was married to Jack Prowant and leaves three Koehler brothers and her parents Alvin and Mrs Carroll Koehler.
A notice from Mrs. Dora Wiebenga states illness requires her to quit working outside the home. She thanks past employers for their kindness. The notice is dated September 9.
D Eldridge McBride is appointed dean of students at Shimer college Mt Carroll Illinois by President F J Mullin. He succeeds Dean Joseph P Schmitzen who leaves to resume graduate studies after two years in the post. McBride, a University of Chicago graduate, has taught social sciences at Shimer since 1944 and has led the centennial committee.
Forty home economics 4 H exhibits and 40 4 H calves from each of four counties will be shown Friday September 17 at Riverview Park Clinton Iowa. Barbecue and fish supper start at 5 00 pm CST followed by a style review novelty numbers by 4 H clubs and judging of the grand champion steer in front of the amphitheater.
A University of Illinois extension engineer outlines cost effective horizontal silos for self feeding. A 20 foot wide silo serves 40 to 60 animals and can feed from both ends. Milledgeville Garden club met Thursday evening at the Mary Fletcher Club Rooms with about 27 members and guests. Mrs. R. B. Thomas welcomed attendees and secretary Mrs. B. W. Hanna read the club collect. V. S. Todd discussed slides from travels while Mrs. M. R. Beinheil introduced the entertainer. Refreshments followed as members shared floral arrangements.
Brown Swiss herds led Carroll County DHIA in August production. Edwin Keim & Sons, Mt Carroll, topped Unit 1 with 1098 lbs milk and 41.5 lbs fat. Rex Rahn, Lanark, led Unit 2 with 1133 lbs milk and 43 lbs fat. Five top herds listed with owners and averages. unit totals show 642 cows in 25 herds, 701 lbs milk and 2.63 lbs fat per cow on test. 129 dry cows.
Green Giant Canning Company completed its 1954 corn pack with 437000 cases stored this year. The plant processed 666 tons of corn in a day, set a daily packing record, employed 173 foreign workers, and shipped 28 railbox cars for storage before labeling and year round shipping begin. Labor conditions improved over prior years despite higher acreage.

Hindy Foster of Oneida hosted her sister Mrs Florence Manrney and a group of relatives and friends over the weekend. Guests included Mr and Mrs George Hanna, Mr and Mrs Frank Beers and family, Miss Kecca Tianna, Mr and Mrs John Weed, and others from New London and Winona Indiana.
Over the holiday weekend no traffic fatalities or serious accidents were reported in Carroll county. Nationally highway fatalities were fewer than anticipated.

Chadwick High beat Forreston 16 to 4 Tuesday afternoon in Chadwick. Iboden pitched seven innings allowing three hits as Chadwick scored nine in the seventh and totaled 16 runs. Forreston made five errors while Chadwick had four.
A reunion of the George Eberly and Judas Kuter Eberly families was held Monday at Pioneer Park in Hinckley with 46 attendees. Officers elected included President Rev. Malcolm Ludy, Vice President Russell Higley, Secretary Mrs. Donald Schumacher, Treasurer Ruth Eberly, Chaplain Reynold Ludy.
Cherry Grove reports depart for Chicago as school year begins. Peter Birchen, brother of John and Henry, is a patient at Deaconess hospital in Freeport. A Sunday school class social occurred in the church basement Friday evening. Ed Bast traded his truck for a sedan. Mrs. Don Ritenour and Mrs. G Snyder, nurses at Green Giant canning in Lanark, will be relieved soon as corn canning ends. Carolyn Erbsen recently tested driving in Mt Carroll. Garland Winters returned from a broad U S motor trip. Mrs. Cloyd Sturtz attended a D C Circle dinner in Oregon Friday at Maxon Manor. Labor Day was celebrated at Shannon. Cherry Grove will be represented at the district meeting in Elkin. Weather favorable for a prospective camerow crop. Relatives attended Kenneth Blakeslee’s funeral Tuesday. A business meeting is set for Friday evening September 10 at the Cherry Grove church. A photo of the triplet Holstein calves on Fred Fields place appeared in the Sterling Gazette.
Fred Good of Lanark will display paintings and carvings at the annual Greenwich Village Fair on Sunday afternoon September 1 on the Burpee Art Gallery lawns at 737 N Main St Rockford Illinois. The fair emphasizes craft exhibitions and demonstrations with games for children and various entertainments. Good hosts a one man show on the gallery second floor during the fair and through September.
