Regular levies for town and relief funds and for road and bridge funds, certified to the county clerk by township officials this year, were approved by the county board of supervisors Tuesday at the regular September meeting. Levies range from 1000 for town and relief in Lima to 22392.59 for town and relief and 23500 for roads in Savanna township.
County Supervisors approved a $61 925 appropriation for general expenditures plus funds for mothers pension blind benefits county highway and tuberculosis uses. A $1 400 state aid road share was also authorized and the levy set to raise these totals with adjustments for remaining balances.
County and community committee men directing the agricultural conservation program in Carroll County will gather in the Mt. Carroll office on September 22 for an information meeting. A state representative will attend to brief committeemen who will relay details to farmers at township meetings soon. Community elections for next year are planned in October during the first or second weeks, with information meetings held then. Officials said a vote on market quotas could occur then if deemed necessary and a decision on market quotas may be made this week.
The National Youth Administration announces a higher Illinois and Carroll county allotment for 1939 40 to aid nearly 30 000 students with part time work and stipends. Needy undergraduates may earn 10 to 20 monthly, graduates 20 to 30, while high school students receive 3 to 5 monthly. applicants evaluated by schools based on need and scholastic record.
Carroll County's Savanna 4-H livestock judging team captured state honors in final contests announced Saturday by the University of Illinois College of Agriculture. Members Paul Miller Paul Doty and Fred Dauphin led the team coached by R E Lamoreux. The report notes concern over former worries being taken over by the government.
LeRoy Goss a 60 year old Savanna engineer was seriously injured when Milwaukee railroad passenger train No 107 struck two moving freight cars near Marion Iowa. He suffered internal injuries and burns and was thought to be most severely hurt among seven casualties. Only one passenger Grover Andres Omaha 50 sustained two fractured ribs. Milwaukee officials opened an inquiry as the high speed train plowed through dirt after the crash with freight cars on a siding leaving the rails and one coach damaged.
Arthur Ferguson was elected president of the Savanna Tennis Association at a meeting in the Old Mill park shelter house. The group changed its name from Carroll County Tennis Association to Savanna Tennis Association and set April for the first meeting of next year. Officers include Louella Weidman vice president Gladys Runyan recording secretary Dr L Bo Hussey corresponding secretary and June Sprecher treasurer. A constitution was adopted and a match with the Morrison association resulted in Morrison winning 4 to 3.
At the start of the November circuit term Supervisor Sherm Myers urged immediate action to prepare courthouse space for women jurors. The single upstairs room may be inadequate for juries of both sexes, prompting a referral to the public building committee for investigation and action. Water as wages on Baluchistan plains notes villagers receive water shares for irrigation.
Four Carroll county residents petitioned for blind benefits, and after long discussion one application was granted while three were denied. Medical examiner Dr. 8 P Colchour answered supervisors questions, noting the three refusals involved applicants past the age of able employment when blindness began. Mary Shellhouse received approval as she was young enough to have pursued work if not for vision loss.
An impending marriage is announced for Miss Mildred Weidman of Savanna and Sylvester Alden Jr. of Savanna, with a wedding planned for Saturday afternoon September 20 at the Savanna Methodist church. A party honoring the bride was held at the Weidman home with guests from Dixon Stockton Mt. Carroll and Savanna.
Joe Zink 45 resident north of Mount Carroll suffered a deep cut from the shoulder to below the elbow when his car was hit by Lloyd Bennett 30 of Mount Carroll. Zink was treated by a local physician and taken to Freeport hospital. Bennett uninjured. The collision shoved Zink’s car about 60 feet. both vehicles were badly damaged as Bennett approached from the north near the high school.

Husking contest planned for Carroll County this fall with site near Milledgeville under consideration, date likely in October.
Carroll County supervisors selected two women Dora Daehler and Lucinda Frederick as regular grand jury members for the November circuit court term. Four alternates named. A new state law requires women on petit juries and now allows grand jury service. A 300-name panel was drawn for the year with 200 to be drawn into panels.
Greenawalt Brothers of Carroll county marketed a drive of 24 yearling steers from near Lanark in Chicago Stock Yards trade last week. The lot averaged 995 pounds and sold straight at 11.25 per cwt. Hog prices rose to a new top of 9.40 in Chicago trade, 2.45 above last week and the highest since Oct 3 1938. Cattle reached a seasonal peak of 12.00, the highest since June 1.
Carroll county's Farm Bureau will sponsor a countywide corn husking contest this fall. Farm Adviser M. P. Roske said the event will be held in October at fields including the Henry P. Rahn farm two miles west of Mill edgeville. Each township should select its best husker to compete, with 14 entrants unlikely. The winner may enter the state finals if eligible. Committee members include Roske, Ralph Fahreny, Wesley Nessemier and John Fogel.
The Review will publish names of delinquent taxpayers and property descriptions in the Sept 21 issue. The county treasurer said lists go to print after noon Sept 17. owners must pay before then to avoid inclusion and added printing costs along with the existing one percent monthly penalty.
More than twenty teachers in Carroll County schools enrolled in an extension course for teachers offered by Northern Illinois State Teachers College at DeKalb. The program begins September 26, with two hours of work weekly over 18 weeks. Classes will meet Monday evenings in Mount Carroll.
Frances Shimer Junior College at Mt. Carroll begins its eighty seventh year under new president Albin C. Bro who took office July 1 and and moved with his family into Sawyer campus home. New staff include Lawrence Carra replacing Annie Ross in drama and Lois Engleman returning as librarian. Dorothy McLemore now heads the Shimer conservatory replacing Grace Changstrom. Summer campus improvements include Hathaway hall and West hall renovations and a new projection room in Metcalf hall for motion picture or sound classes.
Stanley Swinuchowski dropped his wallet while fishing in the Manasquan River inlet at Point Pleasant two weeks ago. Reverend A Boyland FitzGerald of Plainfield did not hook the fish he thought he had. The wallet and the two dollars inside were later returned by registered mail.
