Tax collections near ninety percent in Carroll county

Carroll county treasurer staff prepared to distribute 1938 tax funds to taxing bodies after collecting about 90 percent, totaling 134,450. By Sept 2 total receipts reached 592,625.42. Townships Lin a, Shannon lead at 95 percent paid, Fair Haven and Salem at 94 percent, Washington lowest at 84 percent. Disbursements listed for each township. Mrs George Dachier and son visited Morrison relatives during White side county fair.

Miles Horses Win Honors at Whiteside Fair

A. J. Miles of Mt. Carroll dominated Morrison harness racing at the Whiteside fair. Dorothy Spencer won the 2:12 trot with a 2:10 4-2 heat, Miles’ 2-year-old troiler Dane ol won both the trot and pace specials, Napoleona and Eleanor Thoms dueled in a 2:12 pace with Nepuleana placing second in all heats, Darrell Holman drove Miles’ trio to a 2:00 1-4 heat, and Stanmore—owned by Dr. de Snively of Lanark and driven by Charles Rumley of Morrison—took all three heats in the 2:24 trot.

Quad-County 4-H Beef Show Heads to Clinton Iowa

Carroll county 4-H beef calf winners enter fifth annual quad-county beef show in Clinton Iowa on September 16. Over $500 in cash prizes plus a silver loving cup and rosettes for champion awards. Calves shown by owner to a limit of two. exhibit by 11 a.m. with banquet, judging, and parade scheduled.

Aerial photographs of Carroll County are arriving for an upcoming county map. Ground crews under Herman Daehler will measure check points to enable 40 rods to the inch enlargements. The project uses 14 000 foot altitude photos to assemble a countywide map for the conservation and other departments.

Carroll county dairy herd leaders for August announced

Clarence Cooper of The yon topped the August dairy herd improvement with 19 grade Holsteins averaging 1107 pounds of milk and 38.5 pounds of fat. James Roche’s seven grade Holsteins averaged 812 milk and 36.5 fat, followed by Ren Williamson’s four purebred Holsteins at 861 milk and 34.7 fat. Rex Rahn’s 13 purebred Brown Swiss averaged 826 milk and 31.5 fat, while Rush Garrrell’s 25 purebred Holsteins posted 690 milk and 28.2 fat. Stransky’s Strasdale Bobces Dekel cow milled thrice daily for 120 days, yielding 8264 pounds milk and 68 pounds fat.

Herbert L. Rawlins Jr. former Chestnut Park principal accepts a drawing and math teaching post at Pekin High and Pekin Junior High in Illinois. He earned an education degree this summer and has studied at Western State Teachers College Macomb. He has taught with the National Youth Administration for six weeks and seeks an M A from the University of Illinois. He departed Monday to begin his duties with community good wishes at his advancement.

Man Bound Over In Vernon Farm Chicken Larceny Case

Clarence Scott 30 near Mt Carroll arraigned on larceny charges for stealing chickens from Vernon Weidman farm. He was bound over to the grand jury Tuesday by Justice Frank Sehrgeppel and held in the county jail after failing to post $250 bond.

Stranger Stricken in Savana Cafe Death Identified as Henry Gossel

A man about 55 identified as Henry C Gossel of Eastman collapsed while dining in a Savanna cafe Monday at about seven. He died likely of coronary thrombosis. Coroner and inquest were held. Joseph Horal of Kastman identified the body as his uncle. funeral services were held in Eastman. He was unmarried and survived by a sister, a nephew, and three cousins.

Shannon Farmers Market Cattle Sale at Chicago Stock Yards

D Roy Moll of Carroll county marketed 119 choice heifers from his Shannon area farm at the Chicago Stock Yards last week. Prices ranged from 9.60 to 9.90 per cwt across multiple droves, with weights from 213 to 925 pounds and the highest bid noted at 9.90 per cwt for midweek sales by G Ray Moll. Mr and Mrs Herbert Stein visited with Rey Moll and attended the Eberly reunion at Maple Park.
