Harry Charneski 19 spent Sunday night in Savanna city jail on charges of leaving the scene after a sideswipe crash near Savanna that injured four people in the Padgitt family. He drove a Packard owned by Rhene Law and was returning toward Mt. Carroll when the collision occurred.
Shannon boards faced ongoing teacher shortages as four educators departed or were hired in four months. On Monday, another resignation reached the school board while Herbert Borchers, the third hire, and Roland Wirt both left their posts recently. Miss Falcdene Winters remains as temporary instructor for the two grades until a new teacher is secured.
Steel bins to hold about 2 000 bushels each will be erected at several county sites within weeks to house roughly one third of the 1938 sealed corn. About half of sealed corn owners responded on loan settlements with a third planning to deliver to the government, others re sealing. If market prices rise, many may sell. a third may still deliver loans. One carload of bins ordered, with 15 to 18 bins per car, and sites to be arranged in towns countywide. Approximately 180 000 bushels were sealed last year, implying 30 or more bins needed.
Robert G. Ware 43, long known for local baseball, was found dead at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday on his Fulton area farm. An inquest occurred that afternoon at Fay funeral chapel. He was born Oct 17, 1895, son of James and unnamed Fulton parents, and served in World War I with the Fulton American Legion post. He leaves three brothers Wallace near Lanark Carl in Moline James of Burlington Tenn., two sisters Eleanor of Philadelphia and Mrs Lawrence Metzgar of Fulton, and several nieces and nephews.
Carroll county police received a 49 page list from the secretary of state listing about 3700 names and addresses whose drivers licenses were returned as invalid. The note explains many licenses mailed to those addresses were sent back due to incorrect addresses. Motorists are urged to contact the Springfield office with correct addresses to obtain their licenses. The list includes several Carroll County residents and notes some Thomson and Lanark addresses among others.
Two Carroll county cattle feeders Claus Prins and A Hook from Thomson sold cattle on the Chicago market last week. Prins delivered 22 head of 1180 pound beeves that sold without sorting at 10.35 per cwt. Hook sent 24 head of 880 pound cattle that brought 10.25 per cwt.
Carroll 4H beef calves claim ribbons and prizes at the Quad County Baby Beef Show in Clinton. About 100 youth from four counties competed, with every participant earning at least five dollars plus ribbons and rosettes. Grand champion was an Angus exhibited by Lois Mommsen of Miles Town. reserve champion a Shorthorn shown by Leo Duer of Charlotte Town.
Fire at 4 30 p m today destroyed about 200 feet of the electric cable spanning the Milwaukee railroad bridge over the Mississippi at Savanna. A steamer crew on the river observed the blaze and alerted Sabula firemen who flooded the cable from the river. A short circuit blamed by Milwaukee officials disrupted power for the drawbridge. Workers were brought to the scene to repair the line, and service resumed by noon. The Arrow, Milwaukee’s eastbound crack passenger, was delayed 30 minutes arriving in Savanna at 4 54 p m.
Savanna high school grid squad opened the season with a 13 to 6 win over St. Mary's Clinton on St. Mary's field. Nightingale recovered a fumble at Savanna's 4 yard line and Schaffer scored from three plunges. Cravetta added the extra point on a line play. In the fourth quarter Sampson Savanna tackle broke through for a second touchdown behind the 8 yard line. Nightingale downed the ball behind St. Mary's goal for the score. extra point failed.
Savanna voters approve a bond issue to finance the purchase of an athletic field. The county treasurer announces annual tax sales begin Oct 9 and the delinquent tax list is published this week. County residents plan a Sept 27 farm tour to study soil conservation and beef calves shown by Carrell 4-H win honors at a Clinton county show.
Bids invited for 128 storage magazines at Savanna Ordnance Depot including 119 igloo type, seven standard ammunition, and two smokeless powder magazines. Opening dates set for October 17 for the 119 igloo magazines and October 12 for the other types.
Stransdale Farms Products hosts an open house today and Friday to celebrate its eighth anniversary. Visitors tour the Savanna plant and nearby farm areas, learn dairy processing steps, see Holstein cows, and meet staff including plant superintendent Paul Turner and farm manager Adam Heinze.
Checks for Parity payments under the 1939 AAA are expected to arrive at Carroll County Agricultural Conservation Office soon. The total county payout is about 105000 dollars, with roughly 85000 dollars included in the first group of checks. Transmittals delivered around 1245 applications, the first batch nearly 1100, the last two smaller.
Ten women are among thirty county jury nominees for a condemnation suit over land to build a Mill edgeville Polo road. A twelve member panel will be chosen to assess damages as part of the October 16 hearing before County Judge Orion M. Grove in Mt. Carroll.
The 1939 assessed valuation for Carroll county taxes is 16,335,680, up 120,000 from 1938. Personal property drives the increase to 2,893,920, while land values edge down to 3,539,480. town lots rise to 9,962,330.
Rufus Kahler went to Peoria Monday to bring back a new Caterpillar motor patrol grader recently purchased by the county highway committee. The grader will be used in maintaining sections of the county highway system patrolled by Kahler.
