A community guide urges residents to assess and improve home grounds fences roads and vacant lots. It stresses neat yards, maintained trees, tidy surroundings and minimal costs. Citizens are urged to inventory needs support local groups and dedicate time to beautify Carroll County.
Monday features hot dogs, potato chips, buttered corn, graham cracker dessert and milk with orange juice. Tuesday serves meat loaf with potatoes and gravy, sliced tomatoes, celery, bread and butter and ice cream. Wednesday offers creamed y with noodles and peas with biscuits jelly and applesauce. Thursday presents lasagna with cottage cheese, read and butter and jello. Friday includes meat pie supreme, cole slaw and peanut butter cake.
Carroll County Red Cross members met at Elmer and Mrs. Weber’s Chadwick home on August 26, 1969. They discussed making dirty bags for service men in Vietnam, urged volunteer groups to assist, and reported a Katrina Camille area appeal with an $846 goal and September 15 deadline. Bloodmobile visits were planned for October 12 in Mt. Carroll and December 15 in Savanna.
The Thomson ambulance was sent to the home of Mr Henry Paulsen on a late Wednesday afternoon call as Mrs Paulsen fell ill. She received oxygen and was transported to Savanna City hospital where staff report she is feeling fine today. Mrs Paulsen recently underwent open heart surgery at the University Research hospital in Chicago.
Mr and Mrs Tom Root of Savanna hosted a Sunday supper for the birthday of Harry Root of Thomson. Attending were Walter Root of St Paul Wayne Root Nashville Earl Root David Joe Root Karen David Stricker Randy and Sophie Grawe plus the Root family.
Thomson notes social visits with Mrs. Vada Carroll and her niece and husband from Mt. Carroll. Sunday guests Mr. and Mrs. John Gunn of Clinton Iowa and Mr. and Mrs. David Gunn of Macomb Illinois. callers include Mr. and Mrs. Eddie Kaczinski of Bryant Iowa and Mrs. James Hunt of Clinton Iowa. Lloyd Smith family of Hinkley California visited last week. Guy Plumley spent Sunday and Monday with Wendell Tipton in Swisher Iowa.
County Clerk William Nipe records show 27 marriage licenses issued in August 1969, the highest for August in nineteen years. June and July saw 26 licenses each, the usual low period for wedding filings in the same year.
A Sunday evening softball doubleheader at Old Mill Park in Savanna features the Carroll County Allstars versus a Dubuque Iowa girls team at 6:30 p.m. The 8:00 p.m. game pairs the local Irish Inn team with a team from K Falls.
Mr and Mrs Myles Haas camped at Savanna Army Depot with guests Mr and Mrs Frank Flack of Hanover. The Mullen family from Elgin joined relatives in Savanna for Labor Day weekend with multiple dinners and visits, including Mr and Mrs Merle Cate and families at the Public Use Area near Blanding. Pvt Jon Mullen called from San Diego, and Eldon Hickey with Vada Carroll spent the weekend at Castle Rock Wisconsin.
The PTA will hold a meeting on Thursday, September 11, at 8 p.m. in the school cafeteria. A teacher reception is listed as part of the event.
Mr and Mrs Everett La Shelle moved last weekend from Rock Falls to their home on west Main Street in Thomson.
Fay Ashby of Thomson has been named Maintenance Supervisor for Carroll County by the Illinois Department of Highways. The appointment took effect September 1, with Ashby previously acting as labor foreman. Carlyle Richter of Mt. Carroll and Lynn Speers of Lanark were named new labor foremen to lead two crews countywide.
The Music Boosters invite all band student parents to attend the first meeting of the year Monday at 7 30 p m in the band room.
The Carroll County Farm Bureau will mark its Golden Anniversary with a celebration on September 13 at the Carroll County Fairgrounds. Elmer Airhart of Savanna, committee chair, announced a free pit bar-b-que and beer dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. A 7:30 p.m. program at the grandstand will feature U.S. Congressman John B. Anderson and the Mount Vernon Christianaires quartet. Farm Bureau families should return reservation cards promptly.
The public is invited to attend a meeting Saturday evening September 6 at 8 00 pm in the Mount Carroll school cafeteria sponsored by the Carisa County Taxpayers Association Canan candidates will be present to speak with a question and answer period concluding the program.
Sauk Valley College announces three Sunday tours in September led by President Edward J. Sabol. The 85 percent complete three story facility will host tours on September 7 14 and 21 starting at 1 pm with guides and child care. The building spans 810 feet and 8 acres of floor space designed for about 2000 full time students and aims to finish in December.
The 1969-70 Sterling Area program launches with registration on September 9 and 10 at 7 00 PM in the Whiteide Area Vocational Center adjacent to Sterling Township High School. It offers basic education, vocational and general courses, with fees due at registration and some classes free of charge.
A call for women in the Thomson community to join a Woman's Bowling League at Fulton Recreation Lanes. Gather at 9:00 AM on Thursday September 11 with bowling set to begin at 9:30 AM. two Thomson teams desired and vacancies will be filled as space remains.
Sick Mrs Adeline Groharing of Fulton and Thomson origin rushed to Jane Lamb Hospital as a medical patient. Tammy Hoy, 10, daughter of Hal and Mrs Hoy, had surgery at Jane Lamb Hospital Clinton Saturday evening. Mrs Elsie McKee and Joe Ervin also noted as Mercy Clinton patients. Earl Holman Jr remains at University Hospital Iowa City. Herbert St Ores Sr discharged from Sherman Elgin after seven weeks.
Thomson Junior High German chorus members donated their full fund balance to aid community Christmas decorations. A $23.40 check arrived from Paul Petratz to support Main Street pole decorations, with an estimated $750 to $1,000 needed for ten poles. Organizers seek further contributions and ideas for events like a band concert and ice cream social.
Chomson Briefs Mr and Mrs Jay Buikema Jr and family of Sterling spent Saturday night and Sunday with her parents Mr and Mrs John Kramer. Mr and Mrs J F Wilhelm of Battle Creek Mich were Sunday guests of her sister Miss Dorothe Lewis. Mr and Mrs Paul Petersen and Caroline with her parents Mr and Mrs William Cleaver of Lisbon and Jane Holesinger visited in Nebraska with Mrs Petersen's cousin and husband Mr and Mrs Arlie Stipp of Plymouth. Mrs Rene Welch and Debbie of Clinton were Sunday visitors of Mr and Mrs Lawrence Halfman and family.
Mr and Mrs William Mask of Fulton welcome a son born Friday at Mercy hospital. Mrs Mask taught at Thomson school last year. Mr and Mrs Denver McGinnis of Cloquet Minnesota announce the birth of a grandson to Mr and Mrs Norman Eastman of Cloquet. Mrs Eastman is the former Densal McGinnis.
Mr and Mrs Fred Miller hosted a Riverview potluck in Thoms on Sunday for grandson Greg Miller of Milledgeville who leaves Tuesday for U S Army service. Attendees included Mr and Mrs Willard Peters of Sterling Mr and Mrs Ivan Miller of Milledgeville Jesse Wade La Verne Calif Weldon Eye Morrison Mr and Mrs Gene Halfman and family Mr and Mrs Dick Miller and family Mr and Mrs Loyal Brunner and family Miss Iris Miller and Mr and Mrs Merle Bielema and family all of Thomson.
Labor Day gathering at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Huizenga drew many relatives. Attendees from Fulton included C. P. Huizenga and several families such as Drolema Workman Sikkema Huizenga with Hrenda and Mike, and Harold Smith with Cindy and Doug. Morrison guests included Mr. and Mrs. Hui zenga Donna and Ruth, while Thom son residents joined Mr. and Mrs. Joe Spencer Jr.
The Thomson Village Board will hold its regular monthly meeting Monday evening at 7 50 p.m. in the fire station. The session is scheduled a week later than usual because of the Labor Day holiday.
The first PTA meeting of the year takes place Thursday evening September 11 at 8 00 p m in the school cafeteria. Superintendent Howard L Kennedy will introduce the faculty followed by a social hour. A supervised nursery for preschoolers through third grade will be provided.
