In a special session the Thomson Village board voted 4 3 to reappoint Virgil MacDonald as Village Marshal. The vote followed debate over his past conduct and his current request while Shutters cast a breaking vote. A three member police committee was planned for the next meeting.
The Thomson Trim Tops club met August 11 and heard Mrs. Marge Benson, Area Captain from Rock Island, Illinois, speak. August Queens were Isadore Senneff, Jeanette Dykema, Syl via Witt and Myrna Sippel with Sylvia named Queen for the month. The next meeting will be held Tuesday, September 2, due to the Labor Day holiday. It will also mark the beginning of a new contest. Visitors are welcome.
Mount Carroll Jaycees sponsored an ice cream social to aid Larry Sipe's family, netting 529.74. The event added to a fund at Mount Carroll National Bank, with about 1600 in hand earlier this week. Community support included blood donations, food, and volunteer help from Geneseo Jaycees and local businesses.
Mrs Richard Miller chair of local Girl Scout activities says a new Junior troop leader has been secured and 4th to 6th graders may enroll with a 32 member cap. Organizational meeting Tuesday after school in the cafeteria. an assistant leader is sought. Cadette unit to meet September 10 after school in the cafeteria. Brownie troops are chaired by Mrs Donald Kramer.
Mr and Mrs Larry Smith and their family recently returned from a trip to New Mexico where they visited her parents Mr and Mrs Harold Brown. Mrs Michael Brearton and her children of Marion Iowa were also guests of her parents.
Mrs Margaret Johnson and Mr and Mrs Aaron Johnson visited Friday evening with Mr and Mrs Carl Petersen.
Carroll County Sheriff Harry H. Miller and Deputy Howard Helms nabbed 19 year old John Thomas Robertson of Flint Michigan near Harper one mile west of the Milwaukee rail line after a 13 hour manhunt. Robertson admitted stealing a truck and a radio found in the cab. The arrest followed a statewide pursuit involving Illinois State Troopers and local deputies.
Mercy hospital in Dubuque Iowa reports Sick Louis Shelly a patient in room 357 will undergo surgery Friday. The item notes his admission and planned procedure. Kathy Gray a 13 year old from Thomson fell Saturday while biking and sustained four stitches on the chin and one on the forehead with minor cuts. Don Schoening returned home Friday from St Marys hospital in Rochester Minnesota after surgery.
The Thomson school system opened its fall term with a two day workshop for teachers led by Superintendent Howard L. Kennedy. Sessions covered rules and regulations, curriculum changes, new projects, in service training, and planning for a revised high school curriculum guide.
Timber Lake Playhouse presents Eugene ONeill's Long Day's Journey Into Night opening September 3 in Mt. Carroll for an eight season run. Linda Holmes stars as the troubled wife mother, Richert Easley her husband, Michael Gross as the elder son, Steve Shaffer as the youngest, Susan Budden the serving girl, directed by William Raffeld. Reservations at 244 8844.
In Carroll County Court Magistrate James Thorp fines were levied August 25 for liquor violations and reckless driving. Sterling residents Kathy Meiners and Arlyn Hinrichs each paid 100 dollars plus 22.40 in costs after pleading guilty to minor possession of alcohol. Dolores Hubble of Savanna faced OMVI, fleeing and speeding with fines totaling 150 plus 15 costs, 25 plus 5, and 50 plus 10 respectively. Anthony Vanderbeke of Clinton Iowa received 100 dollars plus 15 costs for reckless driving.

The Thomson Woman's Club will meet next Thursday at 8 p.m. in Mrs. Eugene Murray's home. Attending will be club sponsored students Pam Kaufman and Larry MacWorthy who attended music camp this summer. Harlen Rigney of Freeport will give the Con-Con talk as the highlight.
