Mt Carroll exhibitors Mary Guenzler and Lowell Topfer showed the grand and reserve grand dairy calf champions at the annual 4-H club roundup and Farm Bureau fair. Betty Keim won the dairy cafe class with a Brown Swiss calf. In swine and sheep, grand champions went to Robert Pheil of Lanark and Kenneth Wood of Mt. Carroll respectively. Ma dean Miles daughter of Sr and Mrs Coleman Miles of pt Ca roth severely injured Saturday evening in an auto accident at Davenport. Her nose was crushed and split open when thrown against the dash of the car she rode with Rex Mower Lanark as they hit another car that cut in front of Lowers machine. She was taken to a hospital in Davenport for medical care and remained there until Sunday when her parents drove 40 Davenport to bring her home. Lower and the occupants of the other car were uninjured.
Vandals removed reflector buttons from highway signs and guard rails near Mt Carroll. State patrol and highway officials warn that any person caught with missing reflectors will be arrested and prosecuted. The signs warn motorists of danger spots and their removal could cause serious accidents.
Nearly 160 banking leaders from multiple counties will gather at Rock River Country Club in Oregon on September 15 for Ulinnis Banke Association Group Five's fall meeting. Led by S. E. Guramin, the event will probe regulatory and public relations topics, with talks on double liability, bank pensions, and public education on banking questions ahead of the 1948 elections. Speakers include D. PL Schmitt, Fred A. Gerling, and Marlin A. Gruettinger. G. M. Poley serves as group secretary.
Several accidents at the Route 78 and Route 171 junction were reported over the past days. Harold Warfield of Mt. Carroll escaped injury when his car left the highway, while another vehicle struck a guard rail at the same point. The other driver’s name was not learned and he was said to be from low. Route 171 work unfinished and missing signs leave strangers unaware of the junction.
A. J. Miles of Mt Carroll has two horses entered at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines this week. Dorothy Spencer, a 2 trotter, and Napoleana, a pacer, are scheduled to race with Napoleana set for Wednesday and Dorothy Spencer in a 2:1 trot on Thursday. They recently won events at Eldon, with Napoleana taking the 2 pace purse and Dorothy Spencer the 2:17 trot. Miles expects keen competition and declines to predict outcomes.
Wills of the late Elizabeth Mull day and Benjamin FL Hartman were admitted to probate last Wednesday by Judge Grien M. Grove in Comby court in Carroll County.
School superintendent releases a full list of rural teachers in Carroll county and announces farm tours to show soil erosion control methods next Thursday and Friday. Other items include a lone welfare superintendent application, a Northern Illinois bank heads meeting in Oregon, and fall festival preparations in Savanna for September 20 to 22.
Sheriff Eber Shepherd holds women in the county jail on Friday. Charles Holman of Thomson is jailed on a failure to support his children charge with a $500 bond. Roy Klitz of Mt. Carroll is held after a prior bastardy case. his bond was reduced and later he was re-arrested.
The Morrison fair in Illinois attracts many residents from Carroll County with strong displays, exhibits, and fine horse races. The event is hailed as a leading county fair despite past difficult years for entertainment, drawing broad local attendance.
County Superintendent L E Bruch reports rural schools in Carroll County have engaged teachers for the new school year. Many campuses were remodeled and equipment updated as at least ten schools extend to ten months while several run eight or nine months. A list names teachers by district and school across the county with numerous faculty assignments.
Milledgeville hosts the annual Carrow County teachers institute on Wednesday and Thursday October 27 and 28 at the high school with two outstanding speakers. Garry Cleveland Meyers PhD will discuss child training and home school links among other topics. Dr W P Dearing of Oakland City will address public education and the human teacher in a changing world. The district meeting occurs Friday October 29 in Freeport.
The annual roundup and picnic announced top premiums for 120 exhibited items. Winners include Margaret Mielke Wanda Phillips Ellen McKee Lois Carbaugh Lavonne Holm Jeanette Smith Joann Albert Norma Schaut Joyce Burkholder Virginia Wurster in Beginners Clothing and other divisions.
