Funeral services held for Mrs Laura Smith in Mt Carroll

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon in Mt Carroll for Mrs Laura Smith 76 who died Friday evening at her home. Rev Frank Countryman officiated burial in Oak Hill cemetery. Born March 10 1871 in Boone Ia she was daughter of Frank and Sarah Barry. Widowed since 1913 her survivors include daughters Mrs Margaret Judge Rockford and Florence at home plus two grandsons. A son Paul was killed in action in Germany in 1945.

Funeral services for Susie Dean in Savanna

Funeral services were held last Thursday in Savanna for Susie Dean 78 with Rev. Russell Shaw officiating. Burial followed in Zion cemetery northeast of Savanna. Dean died Oct. 21 at a Galena nursing home after living in Savanna, Chadwick, and Tanark, born in Dundee Scotland. She was survived by nieces and nephews. John E. Roberts 74 died suddenly in Savanna from a heart attack. Burial was in Center Hill cemetery. Surviving include a widow, two daughters, three sisters and four brothers.

The York West End and Fair Haven Home Bureau units charter a bus for a sightseeing trip to Chicago on Wednesday November 5. The bus departs Thomson at 6 am and Chadwick at 6:15 am. Reservations with Mrs. Boyd Handel by Saturday November 1. In other notes Mrs Mary Kuhse returned Sunday night from a two week visit to her niece Mrs Harvey Bohnhoff in Schopsville. Mrs May Sharp of Plattsmouth and Mr and Mrs Dwight Wagner of Rochelle were weekend guests of Mr and Mrs Howard Baker.

Motorists Hurt In Crash Near Savanna

Circuit Judge and Mrs. Robert M. Carter of Wilmington were injured in a head on collision on route 64 two miles east of Savanna at 4 p m Saturday. Mrs. Carter suffered face and chest injuries but was not in serious condition at Savanna city hospital. Her husband had bruises. Their car collided with a vehicle driven by Raymond Fulrath of Mt Carroll a war veteran who escaped injury. Fulrath drove an auto owned by Mrs Clarabel Smith of Savanna.

Acting Postmaster Appointment at Chadwick

Evelyn Cook resigns as Chadwick postmaster effective October 31 after five years in the role. Robert Balk becomes acting postmaster until examination for permanent appointment, aided by Balks wife Mabel Waener Balk who will help in the office. Balk, son of Helen Halk of Mt. Carroll, served in the U S Navy and lived in the area.

State Allots Funds For Local Road Improvement

Gov Dwight H Green releases half of a 15 million dollar farm to market road appropriation to 1 412 townships and 158 road districts for the current fiscal year ending June 30 1948 The division of highways estimates major improvements to almost a third of the state's secondary roads Allotments based on county mileage include Carroll 53 709 Whiteside 81 587 Jo Daviess 64 870 Roads will be surfaced with oil gravel or bituminous material 25 percent of allotments may be used for grading culverts bridges First allocation funded surfacing only with township duties to cover grading and culvert costs

National Guard Unit Planned In Savanna Area

Plans for a Savanna national guard unit were laid out at a city hall meeting last Friday. Recruiting aims for Nov 6 with officers named on Tuesday. The unit will have 183 personnel at full strength and at least 50 minimum, drawing residents from nearby communities. Members aged 17 to 35 are eligible with I R Sanberg, Savanna mayor, as the point of contact.

Lawrence Woessner of Shannon was elected president of the Carroll County Dairy Herd Improvement Association at the annual meeting and banquet in Mt Carroll. Funeral set for Warner F. Schreiner Tuesday

Plans for a proposed addition in East Savanna will be presented to the federal housing authority in Chicago. The Carroll County Housing Authority, with 22 651 in grants from the Illinois state housing board, oversees an eight acre tract option known as the Ammon Sartwell addition. The authority hopes to start work in spring, using funds for land, streets, gutters, sidewalks, sewers, water facilities, and possible landscaping, with some houses built by Savanna Building Corporation.

Kin Of Local Resident Dies In Auto Crash

Mrs. Ray Angel of Eagle Colorado and her husband Ray Angel died in a head on crash near New Castle Colorado on Sept 15. Funeral services for both were held Sept 19 with burial in Eagle. Mrs Angel, born July 29 1900, moved to Eagle in 1902 and was married Oct 29 1933. Survived by her mother two sisters and by Mr Angels mother a brother and three sisters.

Local Resident Schreiner Died At 79 In Chadwick Home

Warner F Schreiner a Carroll county native and Chadwick resident since 1930 died Sunday morning after a lingering illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 1 30 p m and 2 p m at Hope Evangelical United Brethren church with burial in Mt Carroll. He leaves two daughters Olive Freeman and Lila Warfield eight grandchildren and one brother Henry. He was active as a farmer and church worker and had served as school director and road commissioner.

Weber Family Returns From 6500 Mile Southwest Trip

Mr and Mrs Joseph Weber concluded a 6500 mile motor journey through Memphis Arkansas Texas New Mexico Arizona Carlsbad caverns and California with Mrs H F Weber joining for weeks in California They faced a snowstorm near Salt Lake City delaying travel before resuming their return trip via Boulder Dam and Salt Lake City home on U S Route 30.

Busy Sunday at M and M Cafe as bus party overruns dining room

Mrs Pfundstein reports a group of ten Savannah residents chartered a bus to visit the Chicago zoo and fueled a near sellout at the M and M cafe. The crowd ate all but one chicken drumstick and left no leftovers for Monday. Mrs George Dambman Jr hosted Girl Scout activities Wednesday night with games prizes and refreshments.
