Eureka Kansas October 24 Babson argues the education boom masks a 56 percent college mortality rate. He traces failures to flunking finances interest illness and unknown causes and calls for better vocational training and youth preparation for work. He urges communities to fund graduates becoming employers over sports spending.
Circuit Clerk Gordon Smith announces the pool of petit jurors for the November term in Carroll County. The names include George Shields Hazel Helbling Washington Ed Rast Cherry Grove Hazel Dresser David Leonard Phyllis Copperwell Audrey Stoner Shannon Erna M Garner and others from towns such as Mt. Carroll Rock Creek Fair Haven Wysox and Savanna.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon in Mt Carroll for Mrs Laura Smith 76 who died Friday evening at her home. Rev Frank Countryman officiated burial in Oak Hill cemetery. Born March 10 1871 in Boone Ia she was daughter of Frank and Sarah Barry. Widowed since 1913 her survivors include daughters Mrs Margaret Judge Rockford and Florence at home plus two grandsons. A son Paul was killed in action in Germany in 1945.
Funeral services were held last Thursday in Savanna for Susie Dean 78 with Rev. Russell Shaw officiating. Burial followed in Zion cemetery northeast of Savanna. Dean died Oct. 21 at a Galena nursing home after living in Savanna, Chadwick, and Tanark, born in Dundee Scotland. She was survived by nieces and nephews. John E. Roberts 74 died suddenly in Savanna from a heart attack. Burial was in Center Hill cemetery. Surviving include a widow, two daughters, three sisters and four brothers.
The York West End and Fair Haven Home Bureau units charter a bus for a sightseeing trip to Chicago on Wednesday November 5. The bus departs Thomson at 6 am and Chadwick at 6:15 am. Reservations with Mrs. Boyd Handel by Saturday November 1. In other notes Mrs Mary Kuhse returned Sunday night from a two week visit to her niece Mrs Harvey Bohnhoff in Schopsville. Mrs May Sharp of Plattsmouth and Mr and Mrs Dwight Wagner of Rochelle were weekend guests of Mr and Mrs Howard Baker.
Miss Katie Dambman was the honored guest at a Tuesday afternoon birthday party hosted by her sister Mrs Louis Zugschwerdt. Ice cream and cake were served as gifts and well wishers gathered including Mrs Sam Hummelman and others from Lanark Milledgeville and nearby towns.
Circuit Judge and Mrs. Robert M. Carter of Wilmington were injured in a head on collision on route 64 two miles east of Savanna at 4 p m Saturday. Mrs. Carter suffered face and chest injuries but was not in serious condition at Savanna city hospital. Her husband had bruises. Their car collided with a vehicle driven by Raymond Fulrath of Mt Carroll a war veteran who escaped injury. Fulrath drove an auto owned by Mrs Clarabel Smith of Savanna.
Evelyn Cook resigns as Chadwick postmaster effective October 31 after five years in the role. Robert Balk becomes acting postmaster until examination for permanent appointment, aided by Balks wife Mabel Waener Balk who will help in the office. Balk, son of Helen Halk of Mt. Carroll, served in the U S Navy and lived in the area.
Mr and Mrs Sam Shilling will host an open house Sunday from 2 to 5 pm and 7 to 9 pm to mark their 45th wedding anniversary on Oct 29 in observance of the milestone.
Mr Marie Buikema of Fulton spent the weekend with her nieces Mrs Delbert Nelson and Kathryn Dykstra. Mr and Mrs Hiram Green entertained relatives from Milwaukee on Sunday. Mrs Kate Gleason returned home to Ideal after visiting her daughter Mrs Myrta Turney. Miss Esther Schmaling and mother visited friends in Shannon. Delbert Nelson drove to Chicago on business last Thursday. Mrs Quiamboa spoke at Garret Bible Institute in Chicago. Mrs Geneva Ditsworth and daughters visited the Frank Rausch family near Mt Carroll. Mr and Mrs Lyle Mitchell moved into a newly erected home. A son was born to Rev and Mrs Raymond Gowan on Oct 24. Mr and Mrs Sebert Dykstra rented the Schmaling farm in Salem township.

About 200 Legionnaires auxiliary members and guests from 43 posts gathered at Savanna for the 13th district Amer ican Legion fall meeting. Edward Clamage of Chicago spoke on gifts to Yanks Who Gave, rehabilitation resolutions, and anti-subversive activities.
The Hope E. A. B. church Adult Fellowship held its annual Hallowe'en party in Handel Bros. barn with contests including marshmallow feeding, a pillowfight won by Don Bogett, a ghost story, and a showing of Sea Thrills. Crystal Provant won best dressed and Arlene Kaul the most comical. committee members listed.

The Carroll county clerk issued licenses for Fay Neuschwanger and Louis Sisler of Mt. Carroll Charl es Collis of Platteville Wis and Elsie Mason of Detroit Mich Byron Laverne Philbrick and Norma Mellvain both of Savannah. Norma Kosier was granted a divorce from Leonard Kosier in Carroll County Circuit Court with custody of a minor and $10 weekly child support. Frank Gierens and Nicholas Ferencak were sentenced to two to four years in state prison for grand larceny with a 60 day stay and bond set at 4000 each after a writ of error was filed.

Evan Harris a U S Navy midshipman to Pensacola graduated Oct 18 from pre flight training and now starts primary flight training. he is son of Mr and Mrs Don Harris. Regena Beckmire returned to teaching duties at Highland Park after a weekend visit to Humbert Beckmire home.
Plans for a Savanna national guard unit were laid out at a city hall meeting last Friday. Recruiting aims for Nov 6 with officers named on Tuesday. The unit will have 183 personnel at full strength and at least 50 minimum, drawing residents from nearby communities. Members aged 17 to 35 are eligible with I R Sanberg, Savanna mayor, as the point of contact.
Lawrence Woessner of Shannon was elected president of the Carroll County Dairy Herd Improvement Association at the annual meeting and banquet in Mt Carroll. Named officers include Judson Grove vice president John Derver Jr secretary treasurer and Robert Carroll and Ed Keim directors. H B Petty state entomologist presented a fly control film.
The Carroll county Rural Youth annual banquet will be held Thursday evening November 13 in Savanna. IM P Roske farm adviser says a program of music and speaking is planned with John K Morris of Chadwick state representative delivering the principal address. A dance will end the evening.
Mrs. Fred Olson and Mrs. Al ey Temple hosted a dessert bridge at the Olson residence Friday afternoon. High score prize went to Mrs. George Cambman Jr with second to Mrs. Harry Carbaugh. Consolation went to the lowest scorer in the final game.
Chadwick high school will open its annual adult evening classes in Agriculture and Home Economics on Tuesday Nov. 4 at 7 30 p m. All interested in Agriculture or Home Economics are invited. The program includes current topics visual aids and possible laboratory work led by Miss Charlotte Willett and Melvin Stengel.
Miss Phyllis Harris a Pleasant Hill school teacher took her eighth grade pupils Mary Schleuing Marilyn Schreiner and Shirley Friederich to Madison Wisconsin Sunday Mr and Mrs Don Harris accompanied the group after touring the University of Wisconsin campus and the state capitol they dined at the Harris cottage Lake Waubesa M M Stuart left for home in Jersey City after a Ozarks motor trip with his brother in law and sister dinner guests and social visits followed in various households including the Reynold Bloyer home and the Haag home
Plans for a proposed addition in East Savanna will be presented to the federal housing authority in Chicago. The Carroll County Housing Authority, with 22 651 in grants from the Illinois state housing board, oversees an eight acre tract option known as the Ammon Sartwell addition. The authority hopes to start work in spring, using funds for land, streets, gutters, sidewalks, sewers, water facilities, and possible landscaping, with some houses built by Savanna Building Corporation.
Mrs. Ray Angel of Eagle Colorado and her husband Ray Angel died in a head on crash near New Castle Colorado on Sept 15. Funeral services for both were held Sept 19 with burial in Eagle. Mrs Angel, born July 29 1900, moved to Eagle in 1902 and was married Oct 29 1933. Survived by her mother two sisters and by Mr Angels mother a brother and three sisters.
Elizabeth Quest entertained the Junior Fellowship group of Hope E. A. B. church at Mrs. Elizabeth Senneffs garage with games and a marshmallow eating contest. Gayle Weber was voted best dressed. Warner F Schreiner a Carroll county native and Chadwick resident since 1930 died Sunday morning after a lingering illness. Funeral services were held Tuesday at 1 30 p m and 2 p m at Hope Evangelical United Brethren church with burial in Mt Carroll. He leaves two daughters Olive Freeman and Lila Warfield eight grandchildren and one brother Henry. He was active as a farmer and church worker and had served as school director and road commissioner.
Mr and Mrs Joseph Weber concluded a 6500 mile motor journey through Memphis Arkansas Texas New Mexico Arizona Carlsbad caverns and California with Mrs H F Weber joining for weeks in California They faced a snowstorm near Salt Lake City delaying travel before resuming their return trip via Boulder Dam and Salt Lake City home on U S Route 30.
Mrs Pfundstein reports a group of ten Savannah residents chartered a bus to visit the Chicago zoo and fueled a near sellout at the M and M cafe. The crowd ate all but one chicken drumstick and left no leftovers for Monday. Mrs George Dambman Jr hosted Girl Scout activities Wednesday night with games prizes and refreshments.
