Eureka Kansas October 17. Babson advocates careful estate planning to stabilize finances as a path to reduce booms and depressions. He urges doctors lawyers and farmers to invest wisely, train in investments, and set up trusts to protect families. He warns against get rich quick schemes in the Wheat Belt and advises quarterly checks with lawyers and bankers.
Unadilla Farm of Chadwick Illinois sold a registered Holstein bull to Kraft Foods Co of Pocatello Idaho. Change of ownership for Valveeta Sovereign Burke Lad is recorded by The Holstein Friesian Association of America. The 1946 year saw 17 465 registry and transfer certificates issued to Illinois breeders.
A CarrolI county circuit court jury found Frank Gierens of Dubuque and Nicholas Fereneak of Chicago guilty of grand larceny for stealing $29.40 from two slot machines at a Savanna area tavern on June 18. Judge Zick had previously ruled theft charges could not apply to illegal machines. Attorneys indicated appeals and further indictments were planned for others connected to the case.
George Dambman Jr and Guy Mackey returned from Denver where they attended the Central State Shrine association meeting with 23 temples represented. The program included Red Rock park amphitheater and a Pike’s Peak visit. Before Denver they joined sessions of the Illinois grand lodge of Masons in Chicago.
Mr and Mrs Harvey Zugsch hosted relatives on Monday night at a post nuptial shower for Mr and Mrs Willard Roderm e of Polo. Honorees received gifts and prize winnings were shared among guests. Attending were numerous local couples and relatives from Milledgeville Polo Lanark and Lanark area towns.
Residents of Fair Haven township rejected a proposal to issue bonds totaling 15000 for road purposes by a 56 to 44 vote in a special election. Fewer than one sixth of the registered voters participated in the polls.
Mrs Kenneth Whitney entertained her bridge club last Thursday evening with Miss Muriel Kness as a guest. First prize went to Mrs Steve Adee of Milledgeville and second to Miss Kness. Mrs Adee will host the next meeting a week from tonight.
The WSCS held a scrambled dinner at Mrs Geo Schmalng with eleven members present. Guests included Mrs Harvey Seim Mr Delbert Nelson and daughter Mrs Thos Kustes Jr and Mrs Lillian Farnsworth. Other couples visited near Marengo and Miss Esther Schmaling spent the weekend away. Sunday school is at 10 and a missionary student will speak at 10:30.
Nine more members of three state commissions have been appointed by Hugh Cross speaker of the Illinois house. Rep. Franklin A. Stransky of Savanna joins the Community Property Legislation Commission and Rep. Marvin F. Burt of Freeport joins the Commission on Administrative Practice and Review. Lt. Gov. Hugh Cross names state senate member Edward E. Laughlin of Freeport to the Mississippi Scenic Parkway Commission.
Over the past week the county clerk issued licenses to Wilmer J. Groezinger of Hanover and Lily M. Ellis of Stratford England George F. Hinrichsen of Aurora and Dorothy J. Sorenson Hayenga of Savanna Henry John Thayer Jr and Jane Elizabeth Clifton both of Savanna. Also noted are guilty pleas in a car theft case by Robert Moser and Frank Speciale of Chicago with probation requests and a parole hearing for Clarence Collins set for October 28 at Pontiac.
The Salem Home Bureau Unit will meet at the home of Mrs. Dorothy Klitz on Tuesday afternoon October 28 at 1 30. Minor lesson Winter Bouquets by Mia Garnet Keim and Mrs Mildred Morgan. Major lesson Broiler and Oven Meals by Mrs Dorothy Klitz and Mrs Augene Eipper.
Mrs Vernon Hohnadel and Mrs Elizabeth Hohnadel hosted a family dinner honoring birthday anniversaries. Attendees included Mr and Mrs Vernon Hohnadel and daughter Sandra, Mr and Mrs Henry Joersten, and Mr and Mrs Fred Prowant and family. Myron Tibbits visited Macy Indiana from Saturday to Tuesday.
The Schneider hog sale drew a full house in Cha wick with buyers from Wisconsin Iowa Missouri Kansas and Illinois. Top boar and gilt sold for $200 each and 66 head averaged $1265. Mr Schneider called it a grand crowd and a good sale.
The Whiteside Sentinel of Morrison was chosen from 172 entries as third place in General Excellence for weeklies in cities under 5000. The award was presented at the Illinois Press Association convention in Decatur last Friday.
About 26 students at YCHS joined the new Photography Club under Mr. Brooks. John Stearns is president with Harvey Houzenga as vice president and treasurer Norma Strub. The club offers weekly classes plus optional extra studio time and a dark room with equipment for amateur photography.
Clarence Gieson and wife hosted an ice cream supper at the Schreiner home on Friday October 17. Neighbors and friends attended including Fred Gieson E M Murney Spearman Barnhart Queckhoerner Mennenga Rahn Walter Gieson Mary Ritchie George Weber Donald Queckhoerner Herbert Barnhart and Lawrence Weber. The couple received a blanket as a gift and thanks were extended to all contributors. Earl Weber and family could not attend due to illness.
Mrs. Mattie Johnson, confined to a wheelchair for 32 years, received cards and letters from strangers after her name was mentioned in a popular farm paper. She has long been cared for by her daughter Mrs. Albert Hartman and now awaits daily mail with gratitude and renewed sunshine.
Vernon McGinty arrived Saturday from Bridgeport Conn for a two week visit with his wife and son at the J Stickell home. He will visit his parents Mr and Mrs Charles McGinty and other relatives in Thom son. Ted Olson of Clinton Indiana and his parents hosted Kent Olson in Rockford on Sunday. Lois Smith RN daughter of Mrs Miles Byers left Monday for a visit with her brother David in Flushing Mich then will join two friends from Rockford Memorial Hospital for a trip to Boston New York City and Washington DC.
Delbert Merle Etnyre, son of Mr and Mrs Lee Etnyre of Chicago, and Charlotte Harriet Thom, daughter of Mr and Mrs Allanson Thom of Chicago, wed at 4 pm Saturday Oct 11 at Ingleside Avenue Methodist Church in Chicago. A church reception followed. Etnyre, a Chadwick native, served in World War II before settling with his parents in Chicago.
Miss LaVonne Kunde and Harry Martens wed at 7 p.m. in Sterling with Rev. Elder Mueller officiating. Attendants were Miss Jean Woudyatt and S. Martens as the couple plans to live on a Milledgeville farm. Separate ceremony in Savanna joined Mrs. Dorothy Sorenson Hayen and George F. Hinrichsen in a 9 a.m. service led by Rev. H. Foster Whitney. The pair will reside in Savanna after a brief honeymoon.
At 4 p.m. Saturday in St. Peter’s Lutheran Savanna Miss Lily Ellis of Stratford England married Wilmer J. Groezinger son of Savanna residents. The single ring ceremony was by Rev. Gerhard P. Fischer with attendants Mr and Mrs Floyd Niles. The couple will live on a farm north of Savanna. Ellis flew to the U.S. Oct 8 arriving Oct 10 in Savanna, tying a postwar romance to a wartime meeting while Groezinger served in the army.
Miss Mary Dolores Cruz daughter of Mr and Mrs Jesus Cruz Savanna and William K Young Savanna were married at 11 pm Saturday in the rectory of St John’s Catholic Church Savanna officiated by Rev P E Kunkel. Miss Alverda Tyler Savanna was maid of honor and Miss Louise Wiersema Fulton bridesmaid with Robert E Young Newport Ky brother of the groom best man. The couple will reside in Savanna where he works for the Milwaukee railroad.
Lute Geisinger and his orchestra will furnish music for a Legion Dance in the YCHS gym Friday evening. Sponsored by American Legion Post No 1025 and the auxiliary, pop and candy bars will be sold. A RCA Victor radio console and phonograph will be given away, and tickets are on sale now.
Tuesday evening Mr and Mrs Otto Switzer hosted visitors in the Frank Switzer home. Clinton guests Mr and Mrs Joe Larson and Charlene joined Sunday evening at the Otto Switzer residence.
Roy Parker of Savanna announced the activation of the 530th Composite Savanna Sub-group a training unit for army reserve officers. The unit will include officers living in Carroll and Daviess counties with Lt. Col. Roy G. Noble Maj. Harry C. Minteer and Capt. Roy Parker currently serving as officers. Officers assigned will be notified and those in the area urged to send name rank serial numbers and mailing addresses to the 530th Adjutant at Box 266 Savanna NL. Headquarters will be in the Savanna area soon.
Mrs Fred Sack 73 of Mt Carroll died Saturday at her daughter's home in ill health. Funeral held Monday at 2 p m Frank Funeral Home Mt Carroll with Rev W N Lyons officiating. Burial Oak Hill Cemetery Mt Carroll. Born April 15 1874 in Mt Carroll she is survived by two sons Fred Jr Savannah and Howard of Mt Carroll two daughters Mrs Tyrell Davis Mrs Carroll and Mrs Robert Lewis of Thomson, a sister Mrs Susie Back and brother John Summerville.
NIU State Teachers College DeKalb reports 1635 full time students for 1947-48, the largest in its history, drawn from 216 Illinois communities and 12 states plus Illinois. The fall registration includes two Chadwick students. Chicago and DeKalb contribute the most students with 435 and 179 respectively.
Mrs. Harvey Zugschwerdt and co-hosts entertained Thursday afternoon at the Zugschwerdt home with a dessert bridge party. Guests included Mesdames Murray of Thomson Runnels of Milledgeville Sta del Clements and others. prizes awarded to Mrs. Dambman, Mrs. Murray and Mrs. Harris.
Chadwick Boy Scouts plan to collect waste paper this Saturday afternoon asking residents to have old papers magazines ready for pickup. The local troop enjoyed an outing Saturday afternoon and Sunday at the Strauch cottage at Riverview.
Mr and Mrs Henry Grim of New Sharon Iowa stayed with Mr and Mrs Albert Bowles Jr Friday they attended the funeral of Mrs Mary Dyson in Lanark W H Smith with son Arthur and family visited Jefferson Wisconsin Sunday with Mr and Mrs Robert Smith and Mrs Dorothy Derr Mr and Mrs C R Way plan to return today from a three week motor trip through the Ozarks
Illinois automobile license plates will be orange with black numerals as announced by Secretary of State Edward J. Barrett. A new numeral style will be used this year and license applications will be distributed by November 1.
Mrs. Robert T. Adams 70, native of Carroll county, died Oct 16 at her Savanna home. Funeral in Savanna with Rev. Russell Shaw. burial Oak Hill Cemetery Mt. Carroll. Born Anna May Arb March 4 1877 in Mt. Carroll. survived by two daughters Luva Asay and Floyd Collwell, four sons Chester Benjamin Richard Adams and Wallace, 100 grandchildren and two great grandchildren, brother Warren Arb of Chicago.
Richard A. Kersey 80 of Shannon died at 7:30 p m Saturday in a Freeport hospital where he had been a patient since September. He was born April 14 1867 in Cherry Grove township and farmed near Shannon until 1916. He directed Shannon State Bank since 1920 and served as Shannon township supervisor for years. Survived by Miss Marie Kersey Miss Fay Kersey and sister Mrs Ada Catchpool. His wife died in 1914.
Burial services were held Saturday in Chadwick cemetery for infant Robert Wayne Martin child of Mr and Mrs Wayne Martin of Blackhawk Village. He died Friday en route to a Peoria hospital after birth the previous Wednesday in Savanna hospital. Surviving are the parents a sister Linda and grandparents J D Martin Chadwick Wesle y Kness Thomson 0 A Manning 91 passed away at 7 15 Sunday in a Moline hospital. He was born Sept 11 1856 in Carroll county married Katherine Ryan in 1888 and farmed near Milledgeville before moving there. He leaves a daughter Mrs Walter Voltmer of Milledgeville a sister Mrs Chris Ackerman Jerome Arizona a brother Albert Manning Sheff ield Ia and two grandchildren Mrs Co B Heyer Milledgeville and William Vollmer Philadelphia. Private funeral services were held at Shirk funeral home and burial was in Bethel cemetery.
Mrs Lillian Hohnade was pleasantly surprised Saturday afternoon on her birthday as Mrs Harve Schreiner and Mrs Frank Hawkins hosted relatives and friends at the Hawkins home. Prizes in games of chance went to Miss Mary Taylor and Mrs Charles Linker. Guests included Mesdames George Schumacher Morrison Charien Bertholf L H Kuntzelman Savanna Elizabeth Hohnade Jack Doden Fred Provant Charles Linker W H Taylor and Mrs Mary Taylor.

Farm Adviser M W Kocke and University of Illinois representatives work with Hl P Petty to harvest check plots of corn to evaluate the dusting program earlier in the year against the corn borer. Findings aim to measure effectiveness of dust treatments in reducing damage.
The Harmony Birthday torele was entertained Thursday at the Adolph cottage at Hiversen in Heanor of Mieiuthdasy of Mims Jind Mattinin. She received a gift and a prize ticket for Mrs Adolph. A scramble fete was part of the day. Mr Adolph led a boat mile on the river. Mr and Mrs Ben Dykstra with children were dinner guests Sunday of Mr and Mrs LeRoy Rus at Garden Plain.
