An Oklahoma law class elected all officers to avoid slighting anyone.
An elderly man was struck and killed when a car backing out of a side street failed to see him. Police investigating the crash in Carroll County. no charges announced.
Daniel Ackerman 83 of Mt Carroll killed when backed over by a milk delivery car near the Stakemiller home. William James driver, fracture of vented details. Inquest ruled unavoidable accident. Ackerman born 1855 Mt Carroll. survived by brothers Samuel and William and three nieces. Also Orval White, 32, Sabula Junction area, died Oct 18 after legs were severed by a Milwaukee freight train near Sabula Junction.
Carroll County high schools plan a countywide music festival in May 1939 with over 300 students in massed bands and choruses. Chadwick Thorson Lanark Milledgeville Mt Carroll Shannon Savanna schools participate. Two guest conductors to lead massed bands and choruses. David Foltz named general chairman.
Savanna state representative Eve Franklin A. Stransky spoke Monday evening at a Republican meeting held in the high school gym in Dakota Illinois.
Sunday morning collisions leave three young men unhurt after a westbound and an eastbound car meet on a gravel road near the Fair Haven store. Fred Appel of Milledgeville and Eugene Preston of Fair Haven drive the damaged vehicles. Preston’s brother Robert rides with him. In a separate Wednesday incident on Chadwick Morrison road south of Chadwick, Mrs. C A Straka of Milledgeville and Henry Viehl of Fair Haven collide. both cars suffer heavy fender and wheel damage but no injuries occur among the occupants including Mr Viehl, Mrs Straka, her husband, and W H Taylor.
Congressman Allen defends Jewish residents amid Hull note actions and urges the secretary to press Britain not to rescind the Balfour Declaration. He argues the policy supports Jewish rights and seeks continued support for the Zionist project.
Representative Leo E. Allen of Illinois writes Secretary Hull urging Britain not to repudiate the Balfour Declaration amid the Palestine crisis. He cites Jewish contributions to civilization and appeals to defend liberty and tolerance during persecution in Central Europe.
About 75 cars were tested in Mt. Carroll Monday. most vehicles passed. Officials noted few older models were tested since the test was voluntary. The lane moved to Lanark Tuesday to serve nearby car owners.
Carroll county American Legion council held a regular meeting in Milledgeville with Earl Woodring of Freeport addressing members on membership. Legionnaires from Mt. Carroll Lanark Milledgeville and Savanna attended. refreshments followed the business session.
The Illinois state highway department launches a five year plan to permanently close many of its 18 000 highway railway grade crossings aided by a five million dollar program. A five member board led by Alfred Benesch will seek city agreements for closing less used crossings in exchange for improving others with higher traffic.
The Carroll County Tuberculosis Association will meet in Mt. Carroll to plan the annual Christmas Seal sale and to elect officers for the coming year. Dr. R. H. Petty of Mt. Carroll is the current president, and seals will go on sale soon with a portion of proceeds aiding the county association treasury.
A county agricultural conservation committee notice extends the loan application deadline to November 15 for 1937 corn and for resealing corn with prior loans, plus 1937 corn without prior loans, provided the owner complied with the agricultural control act in 1937 and 1938.
A marriage license was issued to Fred Lister and Gladys E Bradford of Savanna. The People vs Neal Dauphin in Savanna was nolle pressed on motion by the State's Attorney. Jurors for the November Carroll County term were drawn, with a long list of names from Savanna and surrounding areas. Real estate transfers and marriage license applications were recorded, and 25 absent voter ballot applications were filed by Monday afternoon.
Parents in Mt. Carroll urge a school patrol to safeguard youngsters crossing Clay Street, a state highway near the school. Traffic is heavy and crossings at three corners near the school would allow east side children to cross only at patrolled points. Scoutmaster F. E. Crain will train boys for service.
Bill Traum launches weekly quiz at the Coronado theatre Rockford broadcast 9 to 10 pm Wednesdays sponsored by Hart Oil. An audience of 2500 attends the live show with relays to Midway Palace and Times theatres. Cash awards total 290 dollars. He interviewed Benny Goodman on air Friday.

Mission Ridge District 55 rural school and Chadwick Lanark town grades earned Superior ratings from the state Department of Public Education this year, matching last year’s results. Certificates were presented at the teachers institute by Mr. Belting. Chadwick’s Esther Zugschwerdt teaches Mission Ridge. school directors include J. H. Linker and Alvin Schneider. Seven rural schools received Recognition ratings this year, repeating last year’s status.
