Woman Found Dead In Chicken Coop By Hanging

Body of Shannon woman recovered Saturday after an apparently self inflicted death. Investigators believe the circumstances point to suicide or self harm with no immediate evidence of foul play. Local authorities continuing to study the scene and a routine investigation is underway.

Deaths of Carroll County Residents Reported Inquest Details

In Shannon two deaths were reported by inquest and funeral notices. Mrs. Esther Tinner Wirtjes, 37, of Shannon township, died by her own action. her body was found in a chicken coop west of Shannon. Private services were held at Sharman funeral home. She leaves husband, son Gerald, two sisters, and two sisters in law. William J. Patton, 74, of Mt. Carroll, died after multiple heart attacks. funeral rites were conducted at home with Rev. J. A. Foard officiating. Burial followed at Oak Hill cemetery. He was born in Stephenson county and survived by wife Martha, son Leigh, four grandchildren, and a sister.

Mrs Elias Smith aged 69 dies at 4 50 PM Friday at her Woodland township home northwest of Mt Carroll Funeral services were to be held following the death obituary notes her residence and age with a local township location and timing.

Parolee Bound Over In Larceny Case In Carroll County

Joe Deets a 27 year old Sterling man charged with larceny was remanded to the county jail to await the November grand jury in Carroll county. He could not post a 1000 bond. Deets was arrested after a Milledgeville calf theft and was turned over by Rockford authorities following a Winnebago county tip. He confessed to stealing the calf near Milledgeville after an initial denial and had been paroled from a state prison seven months earlier following a Whiteside county stock theft conviction in 1935.

Savanna Township high school football team trounced DeWitt 34-0 Friday night at DeWitt in a Homecoming game in the Iowa City area. Savanna scored in the first three periods and added two more in the final frame while DeWitt threatened once in the second quarter but failed to score.

New Cold Storage Locker Plant Opens Tuesday at Lanark

Carroll county opens its first complete cold storage locker plant in Lanark designated as open house day. The Carroll County Locker company offers 240 lockers each about 200 pounds capacity with room for 400 more. Manager George Lang oversees cutting packaging and storage.

Towers Seen Over Illinois Iowa Border Survey Party

A Coast and Geodetic Survey party of forty arrived in Mt. Carroll last week and set up camp in the city park to start a triangulation survey across the Illinois Iowa boundary. From Hampton Iowa, they aim to locate latitudes and longitudes and link stations into the national triangulation network. They have erected 100 foot steel, two-tower frames near Chadwick Lanark Milledgeville Polo and Argo Fa to gain intervisibility for readings, using the outer tower for observers and signals with electric headlamp lights.

156 Cars Tested in Mt Carroll Lanark Safety Lane

Sixty tests occurred in Mt Carroll and Lanark last week with 156 cars checked for brakes lights tail lights windshield wipers and horns. Ninety eight approved by inspectors while 23 failed for faulty brakes 19 for headlights 39 for stop lights not working 4 for tail lights and 17 for wipers. Most cars were late models requiring only minor adjustments. older cars often failed to pass through the lane.

Miss Helen Mulerone of Savanna was named to the post of stenographic clerk in the county old age assistance office last week. She had previously served as secretary to Attorney W G Kent of Savanna, the Democratic candidate for county judge, until last Monday.

Lanark school superintendent Leonard I Wierson was named vice president of the northwestern division of the Illinois Education Association at Rockford. Delegates were chosen from Carroll County for the state meeting at Springfield. Berg of Rockford was unanimously elected division president. Officers include Cully Welsh Claus and Garrett. Kloos re-elected secretary. Conklin treasurer. A resolution urged pension eligibility for non teaching employees and a plan for sound retirement. A new representative assembly will conduct future business. districts get one delegate per 20 teachers. A higher professional standard for teachers and a teacher tenure law were urged, plus state aid for high schools and studies on alcohol and narcotics effects. Dues increase pro-rated to salary. Missing Savanna man believed to have fallen in Mississippi River

Sheriff Eber Shepherd investigated the Sunday disappearance of Erhart Goss, operator of a Savanna billiard hall, from a Maple Grove cottage along the Mississippi River seven miles north of Savanna. Despite searches by Goss, Kenneth Mosher, and Charles Young Jr., no trace was found and river drag efforts continued.

Carroll Receives 180 Dollars for November Relief

Carroll county has been allocated 180 dollars by the IERC for November relief. A statewide 3.8 million dollars funded relief efforts, representing 74.56 percent of the needed total. The commission said 1,037,431 dollars would come from local relief efforts during the month.
