Babson warns in his weekly report that railroads must slash expenses amid high maintenance costs and aging equipment. He cites vapor seasoning for ties, longer lasting rails, and more power equipment as efficiency gains, but warns government control could loom if capital is scarce and labor unions gain influence.
William Heinze returns home from St Francis hospital Freeport as a surgical patient. The Meyer and Nelson families host visitors. Willing Workers class hosts guests from Hickory Grove and Thomson churches. Economics club meets at the church with officers and luncheon. Esther Schmaling visits Freeport and Rockford. Dan Nipe hospitalized at Jane Lamb hospital Clinton. George Schmaling hurt by a bull. Willard Welch visits from Elkhorn Wisconsin. Hiram Green hosts Milwaukee relatives. John Wilburn to visit relatives in California for winter.
Carroll county voters will find three ballots on November 5. The large ballot lists Republican Democratic and Prohibition candidates and a state constitutional amendment. Two small ballots address a tuberculosis sanitarium levy and a World War II veteran bonus bond issue for Illinois. Specimens appear in this issue.
Bids for furnishing and delivering crushed rock for township road improvements in Carroll county were opened in the county superintendent of highways office. Commissioners and supervisors attended. The many bids and itemized sections delayed a decision on low bidders, with awards not expected until later in the week.
Lanark Polo and Prophetstown are among northern Illinois towns listed as eligible for new post offices due to 1944 postal receipts of $10,000 or more and inadequate current facilities. The program, postponed in favor of veterans housing, awaits congressional funding meeting in January, with substantial time before complex construction begins.
J. W. Erdmeier, Carroll county AAA chairman, says the government seeks greater hog output in 1947. The National spring pig goal is 58 million, 11 percent above last spring, with Illinois suggested at 988 000 sows up 17 percent. Price supports remain in effect at 90 percent parity, varying by season, and farmers are urged to prepare for market conditions.
Mrs Harlan Johannsen of Fulton joined Chadwick residents Chadwick briefs as Sunday evening supper guests of Mr and Mrs Glen Bower. Also Mr and Mrs Charles W Miller and family of Thomson visited Mr and Mrs George Kaufman on Sunday.
Carroll County Council of the American Legion will hold a meeting Tuesday evening Oct 29 at the Chadwick town hall chaired by county commander O H Emnyre. It opens at 8 p m and is billed as Get out the Vote night to plan driving ex service members to vote in the Nov 5 general election.
Mr and Mrs Paul Turney announce the birth of a son on Wednesday October 16 at Savanna hospital. The baby, named David Paul, weighed 7 pounds 3 ounces.
Rural fire prevention enthusiasts gathered in Boone County Illinois from as far as Lansing Michigan for the Contour Plowing and Fire Prevention Field Day held October 10. They joined two WLS broadcasts and saw a rural fire fighting demonstration using soybean foam to extinguish a staged blaze during Prairie Farmer’s Dinner Bell on WLS. Attendees included Leon Miller and C M Root of John Bean Co Lansing Michigan James Mathis and Robert E Warner of Rock Falls Fire Dept Whiteside County Illinois Lee Baker Woodstock McHenry County Illinois Arthur C Page WLS farm program director and Prairie Farmer associate editor Basil Polo Harlan Handle and Russell Park among others.
Five Carroll County youths entered the 1946 International Live Stock Exposition in Chicago. Dittmar Cassens Lehreiner Rahn and Zuck will exhibit steers and enter contests. The event runs Nov 30 to Dec 7 at the International Amphitheatre, with entries accepted by Nov 1 for some shows and Nov 24 for carlotes.
Martin M. Wilson 86 of Lanark died Oct 19 at his daughter's home. He was born April 4, 1860 near Greencastle Pennsylvania, married Lucinda Weigle in 1884, and left a farming life for 31 years as Lanark Church janitor. Survived by two daughters, three grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and a brother. Burial in Lanark cemetery. James Martinello 79 of Savanna died about 7 am Tuesday after a year of illness. He was born Feb 10, 1867 in Montreal and worked for the Milwaukee railroad. Survived by widow Mary Ann Bryans, a daughter Bessie Jorgensen, a son Cyril, and sister-in-law. Funeral plans pending at Oak Park Christian church in Savanna.
A 1946 letter from the U S Interior Fish and Wildlife Service relates to Carroll county Illinois residents seeking a six month delay in the opening of hunting at the Spring Lake refuge. It documents a federal decision to extend the closed area at Spring Lake despite local objections, citing national waterfowl program concerns and input from state and federal agencies.
Jacob Hart and a friend built a device that separates buckhorn seed litter and dirt from clover seed. It reportedly yields cleaner seed than state law requires. With no suitable large building, operation is limited to 20 to 36 bushels per day in Milledgeville.
Miss Marjorie Irwin and Donald Morhardt both of Mt Carroll were married Saturday evening in the Mt Carroll Baptist parsonage. Testimony indicates a REA worker died by arc while at work on a pole. November meeting of the Black Hawk Fighters association set for Thursday night November 7 in Savannah under the Savannah Fireman's association. The session at the VFW clubhouse opens at 8 p m with business, then program, social period and refreshments.
Selective Service announced that no more men will be drafted into the army for the rest of the year with effect Oct 15. The army also stated that 435000 officers and men will be discharged by year end.

Alfred A. Artman of Elizabeth, an REA lineman, died after arcing while installing a transformer on a pole near the Herman Daehler farm south of Chadwick. A corner's jury returned a verdict of death by electrical shock after testimony from foreman Alex Schleicher and ground man Lawrence Biesman. Artman, 1908 birth, served in the war and had worked for Jo Carroll Electric. survived by his mother, two sisters, and three brothers. Funeral held at St Mary’s in Elizabeth.
Carroll Harrison Freezer 57 native of Carroll County died at 12 30 p m Saturday Oct 19 at his Mt Morris home after a long illness Funeral services were 130 p m Monday with Rev Ridell Kelsey officiating burial in Oak Hill cemetery Mt Carroll Born Dec 26 1888 in Mt Carroll he married Mae Ludvik Dec 15 1909 In 1930 they moved to Mt Morris where he worked as a proof reader for Kable Brothers Printing Surviving are his widow and a sister Mrs Lura McGrath of Macomb

Katherine Slade of Rockford was elected vice president W T Kreider of Rockford treasurer and Clyde C Kaiser of Freeport secretary. Floyd Brett of Belvidere is new chairman of the executive committee with W R Brach Pearl City and Vera Scotchbrook Warren as new members. Mrs Kenneth Krempel and Mrs Robert Smith of Argo Fa drove to Elkhorn Wisconsin last Tuesday taking the Krempel sons to stay with Mrs Krempels parents Mr and Mrs Paul Freitag They returned that night and Wednesday Mr and Mrs Krempel went to St Louis where they attended a session of the Illinois State Grange at the Statler hotel until Saturday Sunday the Krempels again went to Elkhorn and also to Waukesha Wisconsin to visit Mr Krempels parents.
George Schmaling of Argo Farmer suffered a head laceration Saturday evening when a bull broke loose from a lead rope as he led it to a water tank. He was treated by a Mt. Carroll physician.
