Chicago October 25 Babson argues advertising fuels employment by creating desire but can spark labor troubles. He notes small city papers offer better value, promotes decentralization, and suggests five year tax relief on advertising to smooth economic cycles.
OPA reports a $4731 judgment entered against Roman H. Kluck Motor Sales of Savanna for violating used car price ceilings. The firm was charged with failing to credit trade-ins and selling vehicles at nonauthorized warranty prices and for cars not in good operating condition.
Chadwick residents and guests visited Elwin Allison in Coleta and Wayne in Rock Island and Moline. They later called on Mrs. Kathryne Bundy in Mt Carroll. Clarence Boelkins and son of Lanark joined Vernon Adolph Thursday for evening calls.
Republican leaders predict a record turnout in the county with 21 polling places as voters weigh the veterans bonus referendum and a likely GOP sweep. Governor Dwight H. Green says Illinois could join a national GOP landslide, urging support for the Veterans Bonus Law and a straight Republican vote.
Illinois conservation department and the U S fish and wildlife service plan to develop federal lands on the Illinois side of the Mississippi from Alton to the Wisconsin line. Conservation director Livingstone E Osborne says the project will improve hunting fishing and recreation with refuges mainly in Carroll Whiteside and Daviess counties.
President Truman issued proclamations declaring Thursday November 28 as Thanksgiving Day and Monday November 11 as Armistice Day. The announcements designate the holidays nationwide and specify observance guidelines.
Preliminary plans for a Class C baseball league include teams from Illinois Iowa and Missouri announced after a ten city meeting and four major league clubs. Frank Hern named temporary president and the Central Association chosen as the league name with operation planned for next year. Acting chief Tehon of the Illinois Natural History Survey proposes trapping wild ducks south of Savanna and transporting them to a portable x ray unit to detect lead shot. The field work, aided by a Champaign deputy, aims to measure lead poisoning rates and the share of birds shot but not killed while surveying feeding grounds from airplanes.
Secretary of State Edward J. Barrett announced 1946 motor vehicle license blanks are available at 25 000 locations in Illinois including newspapers, notaries, and clubs. Deadline for re assigning current numbers is midnight December 1. motorists must attach 1946 registration cards and provide complete information. Mrs. Paul Turney and infant son returned home last Thursday from the Savanna hospital.

Miss Mary Elizabeth Truninger daughter of Mr and Mrs Herman Truninger of Savanna married Vernon Buswell son of Mr and Mrs H P Buswell also of Savanna in a 3 30 p m ceremony at the bride’s home. Rev E Cedric Pope officiated. Attendants were Mrs W C Neuschwanger and John Washburn. After a two week honeymoon to Winnipeg Canada they will reside in Savanna. The bride is a Savanna High School graduate and worked at Martha Brothers store. The groom a Savanna High graduate served in the Canadian and US Army Air Corps and now works in the Northwestern Illinois Gas and Electric Company accounting department in Savanna.
Miss Shirley Thruman daughter of Mr and Mrs Wilbur Gates of Apple River married James Sullivan son of Mrs Ruth Sullivan of Savanna at 4 pm Friday October 28 in the First Presbyterian church Savanna. The Rev Russell Shaw performed the single ring ceremony with attendants Mr and Mrs John Sullivan. After a wedding trip to Chicago the couple will reside with the bridegroom's mother north of Savanna both are employed at the Savanna ordnance depot.
Miss Joyce Keim daughter of Mr and Mrs George Keim Mt Carroll and Robert Ross son of Mr and Mrs Albert Ross Waynesboro Va married at 2 pm Oct 20 in Mt Carroll Methodist Church Rev Frank Countryman officiated. Attendants included Miss Beryl Hoover Savanna and sisters of the bridal party. After a reception at the bride’s home the couple left for a wedding trip to Virginia.
Miss Doris M. Brandt daughter of Mr and Mrs Edward A Brandt native of Fulton and resident of Savanna married James F Tipp son of Mr and Mrs Albert Tipp of Mt Carroll in a ceremony conducted by County Judge Orson M Grove at his office Attendants were Mr and Mrs Lyle Tipp brother and sister in law of the groom Both spouses work in Savanna with Doris at the Savanna Garment company and James a Savanna native and World War II veteran.
Two army officers Col Bion C Welker Mountainside Pa and Lt Col Joseph W Schamel Mt Carroll Kr are held for court martial on misconduct in office announced Oct 24 in Bremen Germany. Schamel accused of improper use of Red Cross goods and taking Bremen state government property.
Marriage licenses issued this week from County Clerk W. M. Nipe include Roman Biiukoff and Theresa Pittman of Bettendorf Iowa Allen R. Winder of Burlington Iowa and Maryellen Blenner of Savannah plus Buswell and Mary Truninger of Savanna. Nipe and Deputy Marion Hartman prepared ballots and election supplies for the November 5 general election with a new multigraph machine in use printing instructions to election boards.
A family dinner at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. P. Hartman celebrated the birthdays of the couple and honored returning veterans Lee Hartman Jr, John Stein of Savanna, Kenneth Hartman of Rockford, Robert Hartman of Plainfield Ill, Lee De Chanso of Joliet, and Clifton Hartman of Sterling. Guests included Roy Hartman and Robert of Plainfield, Kenneth Hartman of Rockford, De Chanso of Joliet, Clifton Hartman and family of Sterling, Bill Provant and Shirley, Boyd Handel and Virgil, Lee Hartman and family, Sepha Stein, Betty Wagner and Allen Shoup.
Mrs. Laura Stiles and Frank Croffett of Savanna wed on October 19 at St. Paul’s Methodist parsonage in Papillion Nebraska with Rev. W F Wright officiating. The couple returned from a wedding trip in Nebraska and Kansas and reside at 16 Main Street Savanna.

Mount Carroll high's grid team lost to Polo 19 to 6 in a Rock River game at Polo. Polo scored in the last three quarters while Mt Carroll's lone score came on a 25 yard run by Phillips and a 28 yard pass to Sisler in the final period.
William Railling 88 former Milledgeville farmer died Friday night Oct 25 at the Dixon home of his daughter Mrs Ida Kump where he had lived the past five years. Funeral services were held in the Kump home Monday at 1 30 p m and at 2 p m in the Dutchtown Church of the Brethren. Born June 5 1868 in Pittsburgh he moved to Milledgeville in 1903 to farm. After his wife died April 25 1941 he lived with his daughter in Dixon. Surviving are three daughters Mrs Kump Mrs Ralph Heimaugh Dixon and Mrs J A Cordell Fort Worth Texas.
Mrs. Anna Greison, 77, died Oct. 25 at her Savanna home after a long illness. Funeral Feb. 26 held at the family home with Rev. T. Cleworth. burial in Savanna cemetery. Anna Fennie born 1869 in Denmark. married 1891 to Chris T. Greison, who died 1937. surviving son Hans P. and Albert M. Greison of Savanna, daughter Mrs. A. S Hill of Pittsburgh, seven grandchildren, brother Ever Harritz of Tucson. Mrs. Laura Frazee, died Oct. 24 at Carline Mark home for aged ladies in Mt. Carroll. Funeral Feb. 26 at Frank funeral home, Mt. Carroll. burial in Lanark cemetery. Born 1857 in Clifton Park, N. Y.. moved with husband to Lanark, then to Nebraska, returned to Carroll 20 years ago. A sister survives.
Mrs. Mary Sargent Smith died at 1 05 a m Tuesday after suffering a stroke at the dinner table Monday. Funeral services are set for 2 p m Thursday at a Warren Illinois funeral home with burial in Elwood Cemetery. She is survived by two daughters Mrs H C Doll of Lena and Mrs Machen and one grandson.

Vernon Fink of Chadwick entered two Herefords, Howard Huggins of Thomson entered two Herefords, and Willis and Arnold Sikkema of Thomson each entered one Hereford.

Miss Janet Standish became the bride of Delbert Gaar at 2 oclock Sunday afternoon in the Baptist church at Marengo. Attendants were Miss Ruth Standish and Vaughn Gaar. The couple will live in an apartment in Mt. Carroll while Mr. Gaar is employed by John Derver Jr.
Regular fall meeting of the 13th district of the American Legion will be held in Dixon on Sunday Nov 3 at 1 30 p m. Dixon post 12 will host the event with Commander Walter C Knack inviting all Legionnaires to attend and see post improvements. Douglass Getchell of Grayslake department senior vice commander will be principal speaker and Congressman Leo E Allen of Galena will deliver a message to veterans. Harold Eldred of Sterling district supervisor will urge passage of the Veterans Recognition Act and district delegates to the San Francisco national convention will report on highlights. The district covers six counties and about 40 posts, with a large attendance anticipated.
Soil tests from Carroll County show wide fertility differences among 196 farmers and 1,886 phosphate samples and 1,837 potash samples. Potash results exceed 200 pounds per acre in 47.3 percent, 150-200 in 24 percent, 100-150 in 19.7 percent, and under 100 in 9 percent. Phosphate tests show 51.7 percent low readings with 25 percent slight, 11.4 percent medium, and 11.9 percent high.
