Illinois survey plans x ray ducks near Savanna

Acting chief Tehon of the Illinois Natural History Survey proposes trapping wild ducks south of Savanna and transporting them to a portable x ray unit to detect lead shot. The field work, aided by a Champaign deputy, aims to measure lead poisoning rates and the share of birds shot but not killed while surveying feeding grounds from airplanes.

Deaths of County Resident William Railling at 88

William Railling 88 former Milledgeville farmer died Friday night Oct 25 at the Dixon home of his daughter Mrs Ida Kump where he had lived the past five years. Funeral services were held in the Kump home Monday at 1 30 p m and at 2 p m in the Dutchtown Church of the Brethren. Born June 5 1868 in Pittsburgh he moved to Milledgeville in 1903 to farm. After his wife died April 25 1941 he lived with his daughter in Dixon. Surviving are three daughters Mrs Kump Mrs Ralph Heimaugh Dixon and Mrs J A Cordell Fort Worth Texas.

Mary Sargent Smith, 83, Dies in Savanna Home

Mrs. Mary Sargent Smith died at 1 05 a m Tuesday after suffering a stroke at the dinner table Monday. Funeral services are set for 2 p m Thursday at a Warren Illinois funeral home with burial in Elwood Cemetery. She is survived by two daughters Mrs H C Doll of Lena and Mrs Machen and one grandson.

Fall Meeting of 13th District Legion Set in Dixon

Regular fall meeting of the 13th district of the American Legion will be held in Dixon on Sunday Nov 3 at 1 30 p m. Dixon post 12 will host the event with Commander Walter C Knack inviting all Legionnaires to attend and see post improvements. Douglass Getchell of Grayslake department senior vice commander will be principal speaker and Congressman Leo E Allen of Galena will deliver a message to veterans. Harold Eldred of Sterling district supervisor will urge passage of the Veterans Recognition Act and district delegates to the San Francisco national convention will report on highlights. The district covers six counties and about 40 posts, with a large attendance anticipated.

Fertilizer need varies across Carroll county farms

Soil tests from Carroll County show wide fertility differences among 196 farmers and 1,886 phosphate samples and 1,837 potash samples. Potash results exceed 200 pounds per acre in 47.3 percent, 150-200 in 24 percent, 100-150 in 19.7 percent, and under 100 in 9 percent. Phosphate tests show 51.7 percent low readings with 25 percent slight, 11.4 percent medium, and 11.9 percent high.
