Eureka Kansas October report notes farmers earned rising net income from 15 to 18 billion dollars since 1945 with expectations above 20 billion this year despite poor corn crop. It argues farm prosperity, debt payoff, and asset improvements, but urges judging profits by a twenty year average and calls for wiser consumption and investment.
Chadwick Bries hosted Sunday guests including Jess Schreiner and Marilyn Schreiner. Monday visitors at J Y Stickell’s included Charles and Dick McGinty and Babette. Other gatherings featured Vernon Hohnad and Sandra from Oregon with Elizabeth Hohnadel and Kathryn Rahn, plus from Ohio the Frommell family visiting Charles L. Er. Edward Manning was confirmed at St John’s Savanna.
A Carroll county circuit court jury selection began for Frank Gierens and Nicholas Ferencak, nicknamed slot machine bandits, after Judge Leon A. Zick overruled a defense objection to the use of an electronic notice system. By day’s end four jurors were seated, with more to come after a one day recess for a district bar meeting.
Marriage licenses were issued last week from the county clerk to several Savanna area couples including J. Fe. Van Dyke and Nellie Heikes, Carl Handel and Georgianna Wurster, Wilbur Miller and Naomi Nicklas, Vernon Gordon and Lenorah Pickens, Jack Bowman and Dorothy Fehler, with others in Savanna and nearby towns. Sheriff Henry Truninger was notified that a stolen automobile found in a Wauwatosa garage belonged to W. W. Wagner of Savanna. repair bills cited at 187 dollars.

Overnight guest Chadwick News LeMoyne Baker stayed Saturday at the Marshal Far thing house. Georgee Yost and Mrs. R. H. Heybeck of Elgin visited Sunday and Thursday respectively. Mrs. Heybeck and Mrs. D. L. Plumer of Naperville spent time with the Zugschwerdt family. Mary Sheridan of Thomson visited the Stickell home midweek.
About 4 000 adult fish including crap pies bluegills and largemouth bass were planted in Spring Lake north of Thomson last Thursday by Fred Lashbrook supervisor for the union department of conservation and two assistants. The fish were transported by truck with 8 000 more largemouth bass planned in three to four weeks once Geneseo water is drained.
Matt Law, 21, of Savanna, son of Mr and Mrs Loyal L Law, suffered severe burns after pouring gasoline on a rubbish fire on his uncle John Breitbach’s farm southeast of Savanna. William Siedinburg, nearby, found him rolling on the ground to smother flames and he was transported to a physician then Savanna hospital with second degree burns to the face hands and wrists and first degree burns to the neck with singed hair.
Miss Naomi Nicklas and Wilbur Miller wed at United Brethren church Center Hill with Rev S A Bird officiating. Erma Polhill as maid of honor. They plan a southern wedding trip and farm residence near Savanna. Georgianna Wurster and Carl Handel wed at Mosquito Hill Lutheran with Rev Gerhard Fishier officiating. Virginia Wurster maid of honor. Joes Millerschoen best man. The Handels will live on a farm east of Savanna after returning from their wedding trip.
Chadwick Briefs detail visits to Katherine Shaw Bethea hospital Dixon and social hosting across Milledgeville Chin Fu and Mt Carroll. Many names and households are listed as guests for meals and Sunday gatherings, with nursing board activity by Lenora Queckboerner and staff changes noted.
Chadwick Woman's Club project moves forward as three Girl Scout troops and leaders are lined up. Brownie Troop led by Laura Daehler with co-leaders Eugene Miller and Albert Hartman meets Saturdays. Intermediate and Senior troops organized by George Cambman Jr and Ora Thomas with respective co-leaders. Plans include hikes, wiener roasts, and a troop crest Kardinal.
Three hundred young pheasants were released in Carroll County on Saturday by the State Conservation Department with help from local sportsmen's clubs and game wardens.

Afternoon guests included Flora Becker and Roscoe Dial and Mrs Leonard Fink. George Cambon Jr hosted Sunday priests with Mrs Harvey Zuyschwerdt and others at a bridge luncheon. Herbert Stein family outing and Dickeyville trip followed. Harmony Circle birthday at Adolph Riverview cottage. Buss family Dixon visited Rogers home and Ted Olson of Clinton stayed with his parents.
Circuit Judge Leon A. Zick ruled cash found in slot machines is not tainted by illegality and can be used as evidence. Frank Gierens of Dubuque and Nicholas Ferencak of Chicago face theft charges for taking machines and cash from the Indian Head tavern near Savanna on June 18. The ruling followed suppression motions and led to new indictments and a Monday trial date.
Mrs Phoebe Knox died at her Milledgeville home Saturday at 4 p m aged 5 Surviving children include three daughters Nellie Rickett Harlie Brown and Clarence DeWolf two sons Leonard and Wayne a sister and two brothers A service was held at home and Lutheran church with Dr F M Keller officiating Interment in Pough cemetery Coleta Illinois
Harry M. Rowland, longtime Lanark farmer, cattle breeder, and bank director, died aged with a life of dairy and beef cattle, horse and buggy days fading into car trips. He served as Lanark postmaster, directed Exchange State Bank and Lanark Mutual Telephone, and was noted for charity and punctuality. Burial in Lanark Cemetery beside family. He married Sibyl Wolf in 1906 and left a son John Loren and two grandchildren. Burial followed a funeral at Frank Funeral Home led by Rev. E. Y. Knapp with Rev. Donald Olson.
In Dutchtown Mrs Lawrence Post hosted a gathering of women from local chapels to can 45 quarts of apples for relief. A relief truck will pick up the supplies and distribute them to the areas of greatest need.
The October meeting of the Chadwick American Legion Auxiliary unit will be held next Monday night in the home of Mrs. John Magill.
Mrs Burger Runnels hosted a dessert bridge party Saturday at her Milledgeville home. Overnight guests at Mr. and Mrs. O. H. Rahn were Miss Mattie Gregg of Oak Park Miss Mildred Moore Miss Frances Hubler and Miss Helen Johnson of Chicago. The Prairie Club travelers plan to meet 25 members aboard Burlington Zephyr cars. About 45 attended the Monday Masonic hall smoker with guests from Mt. Carroll and Milledgeville. The next smoker is set for Monday evening, Nov 10.
The fall conference met Tuesday at the Church of the Brethren in Lanark with Dr. Carpenter of Baileyville as principal speaker. Chadwick delegates included Mesdames Schreiner Rahn Kingery Carbaugh Plock Sollenberger and Larem.
Mrs. K. W. Senneff assists in running a book fair that opened yesterday and runs through today in the old Mt Carroll school gym. The event is sponsored by the Mt Carroll P E O chapter.

Shimer College in Mt Carroll announces Dad's Day events for November 1 and 2. Brendon Kneale will chair the weekend program. A Sunday church service at the Baptist church features Rev Carl Winters delivering the sermon. his daughter attends Shimer.
Churches across Lanark Chadwick Milledgeville and Pearl City organized a Saturday auction to aid European relief. Goods ranging from livestock to furniture and a goat sold for hundreds while lunch proceeds and cash donations added to the total. Community volunteers and visiting auctioneers supported the effort, stressing Christian service and gratitude for participants and local merchants.
Lt Duan Linker son of Mr and Mrs W C Linker of Chadwick arrived at Sterling airport in an SNJ navy plane for an overnight visit. He stayed with his parents and left Sunday morning for Anacostia Field Washington DC for training after refueling in Columbus.
