Hingis Automotive Trades association endorses moving state license plate issuance to April 1 to ease mail delays and avoid winter spending spikes. April 1 would let enforcement stay tight while motorists pay during spring car purchases and renewal activity, reducing winter bottlenecks.
Seven indictments were returned by the federal grand jury in Freeport. The two charged in separate indictments involve Mont R. Cheeseman of Lanark and Elwyn F. Johnson of Ridott in a May raid that uncovered an illegal still in a Cherry Grove township barn. They face counts for making mash and possessing unpaid tax liquor. The raid angered locals as vats were dumped into Straddle Creek harming fish. Judge Woodward will preside a November-December session. jurors to report November 9 for two weeks.
Carroll county teachers plan to attend the Northwestern division meeting of the Minors State Teachers association in Rockford Friday Oct 30. The program lists morning sessions at Midway Theatre with readings, addresses by Dr L Thomas Hopkins and Dr T W Smith, and sections led by Local educators.
County Superintendent L C Campbell said paving of Route 171 from Thomson to Route 78 may not start this fall. Harrison Engineering won the contract, but a company representative told Dixon highway officials start in fall is unlikely. Residents of Argo Forks complain about delays and road conditions worsen in wet weather, with winter expected to keep the road in poor shape.

D Ellis, Director of Emergency Conservation for the Blines Emergency Relief Commission, says about 4100 CCC applicants will be screened Oct 1 to 15 1926 with 3000 plus coloned youths. Eligibility rules stay mostly unchanged but waivers allow reentry for drought youths from farm families in 43 counties. Age remains 17 to 28.
Carroll County officials report a record surge in requests for absent voters ballots. By Monday noon 84 residents had received ballots while at least as many more requested applications. About 18,000 ballots are ordered for November 3 with seven ballot columns matching party lines and a separate small ballot on tax for tuberculosis care.
Announcement of the marriage of Albert B M Herbig of Savanna and Miss Loraine Linkett of Freeport, performed Saturday in Columbia City Indiana with a single ring ceremony. Afterward the couple dined in Rockford. Herbig, a state highway police member for three years, will reside in Savanna with his wife.
The Ideal Farmers club will hold its regular monthly meeting next Wednesday evening Oct 28 at 7 30 in the Ideal church public invited. It features community singing led by H E Stakemiller prayer by H F E Stakemiller business music readings solos and various musical numbers by local groups including the Hill Billy band of Chadick and performances by the Hartman and Seim families and the Ideal Five followed by a talk by Attorney John L Brearton of Savanna.

Republican rallies were held Wednesday night in Savanna and Hanover. Attorney Ralph M. Eaton of Mt Carrell spoke at Hanover with Representative LeRoy Green of Rockford addressing Savanna. Eaton is also set to speak Friday night at Sealer Mound and Lanark on Saturday.
The Carroll County commission of Public Welfare reports thirty six certificates awarded in recent days for October pension eligibility. Forty more awards are expected next week. To date two hundred ninety two awards have been issued in the county.

A newly finished barn on the Austin Roche farm north west of Mt Carroll was destroyed by fire early Tuesday morning. Two losses were estimated at 8400. Fire originated from spontaneous combustion of soy beans stored inside. Neighboring buildings were spared and insurance covered hay and straw losses. The Mt Carroll fire department was delayed by distance. The old Roche barn burned last year.
Milwaukee and Burlington railroads had objections sustained on several tax levies in county court. Pension and police pension rates were found misrecorded. district 98 funds deemed sufficient. Shannon village public benefits rate exceeded statutory limits. Hearing on other objections continued to Monday Oct 26 as a supreme court ruling on a similar case awaited.

Carroll county automobile owners saved 6973.50 in state license fees in the first eight months of 1936 after the fee reduction effective Jan 1. Secretary Hughes said the reduction amounts to about 45 percent per car and did not diminish revenue, noting an increase in license fees and registrations through Sept. 1936. He forecast yellow license plates with black numerals next year and free application forms soon. Ballots for county 4-H contests were issued this week with expected high turnout.

Hunters along Carroll County and neighboring areas watch migratory flocks as cold weather nears. Large numbers of ducks and geese move south near river sloughs and lakes, with several flocks seen near Flag and Clear lakes west of Thomson. Weather could bring more birds into range before opening day, but beware hazardous drives on the island.
Mrs. Hendel, living seven miles north of Savanna, was seriously burned Monday morning when cleaning fluid she used to remove mattress spots ignited. Her clothing caught fire, she smothered flames with a blanket, and was treated by a physician in Savanna. She is resting at a daughter’s home on the Ridge road.
Harvey Donahoo 34 a Milledgeville resident for most of his life died Saturday night at his Lanark home after weeks with Bright's disease. He is survived by his widow, his mother Mrs. Kate Dean of Milledgeville, a sister Mrs. Clara Hodge of Milledgeville, and two half brothers Harry and Leonard Dean of Milledgeville. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at Shirk Funeral Chapel Milledgeville with Dr W S Bell officiating. Interment was in Brethren Cemetery.
