Stranger Found Dead in Savanna After Mattress Fire
In Savanna a stranger identified as Frank Novak, an itinerant laborer on a Milwaukee railroad crew, was found smoldering on a mattress in a rooming house. Coroner’s inquest ruled death accidental suffocation. Firemen reported smoke from the unfurnished room and Novak had signed in under that name earlier that day. Officers began locating relatives for proper disposition.

Black Mutant Pheasants Released in Carrol County
A truckload of nearly black Mutant pheasants was released last week at multiple sites in Carroll County by the Yorkville state game farm director and Steve Rigney of the Department of Conservation. About 100 birds, similar in size to ringneck, were released near Chadwick, Thomson, Lanark and Argofa. All birds are banded and described as rare locally.
