Thomson's Band under Earle Mailand travels to Southern Wisconsin University Platteville Wisconsin on Saturday for Homecoming events. The band marches in the parade, competes for trophies and ribbons, attends the football game, and returns that evening.

Earn Certificates For Training In Children's Services

Mrs. Mildred Brach librarian Margaret Bensinkveld and Marian McKee of the York Township Public Library have certificates from the Illinois State Library for completing a Children's Services workshop. The program, arranged by the Northern Illinois Library System, was led by Anthony Baldarotta from Rockford Public Library with sessions in Mount Carroll and Crystal Lake. Grace Shope of the University of Illinois conducted the courses on children's library service materials reference and reading programs. The workshop is the first in a series for the 46 libraries in the NILS network.

Operation Across Mississippi River Modernizes AT&T Cable

The Mississippi River operation nears completion with 22 000 feet of dual 4 ½ inch cables laid under the river bed by Pentzien Inc. of Omaha. Supervisors say the project, begun July 24 1967 and costing about 1.5 million dollars, supports a continental AT&T communication line and will move to Ottawa Iowa after finishing in Thomson.

Local Youths Report Injuries and Illness

Debra Brown, daughter of Mr and Mrs Kyle Brown, is confined to bed with a mild rheumatic fever. Dale Eslinger, son of Mr and Mrs Calvin Eslinger, injured his right foot in a Fort Benning accident while working with a tank. He reports crushed bones, a nearly severed big toe, and a four week cast. He was treated at the base hospital and released.

Thomson PTA Plans Mardi Gras Halloween Celebration

The Thomson PTA committee led by Mrs Hal Hoy schedules a Halloween carnival Monday October 30 in the school gym starting at 7 pm with costume judging in four age groups and a group-costume category. Prizes, treats, and after events include a Witch Wagon call, registration at the door, and chaperoned dances for teens ending around 10 pm.

Ernest E. Smith 59 of Thomson dies suddenly on farm

Ernest E. Smith 59 died Monday morning of a heart attack while working east of Thomson. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Frank Funeral Home in Mount Carroll with Rev. Peter J. Surrey. Burial in Upper York Cemetery. Survived by Dora Lee Wilson. three children Marjorie Nancy Larry. five grandchildren. two sisters. Smith was a York Community High School 1927 graduate and longtime farmer. former Mount Carroll Mutual Fire Insurance director and Carroll County Farm Bureau member.

Goodwill Truck Pickup Scheduled at Mrs Sippels Home

Announcement says the Goodwill truck will stop at the home of Mrs Donald Sippel on Wednesday November 15. It welcomes donations of used clothing toys electrical appliances and small furniture. Items in need of repair are accepted to provide work for handicapped people. Leave items with Mrs Sippel or call for other arrangements.

The Science Club of Thomson High School reports success in their first subscription drive. They solicited the Village for renewals and new subscriptions totaling about $150, with remaining rural areas to be canvassed this week as the campaign expands into new districts.

PTA Enjoys England Slides

The October PTA meeting opened with president Mrs. Paul Green presiding in the school cafeteria. Reports covered the 1967-68 budget and current membership drive by Mrs. Merle Bielema and Mrs. Larry Geerts. David Pease of Geneseo showed slides and narrated his exchange teaching year in England. The attendance banner went to Mrs. Jecklin’s fourth grade, and the November meeting will be an Open House for Education Week.

MacDonald pleads guilty to new charge in court

In a circuit court hearing on Thursday October 19 Assistant Judge Edward J Turnbaugh dismissed arson against Robert MacDonald 22 of Thomson and a new complaint for criminal damage to property was filed. MacDonald pleaded guilty to the new charge and requested probation. A psychiatric examination was ordered and the case continued to November 3 at 1 50 p m.

Mrs Murray Wins Two Ribbons at Palisades Art Show

Mrs. Eugene Murray earned a red and a white ribbon for two of her pastel entries in the Palisades Art League exhibit held in Savanna. Her pieces included a twilight farm scene titled Chore Time and a Mississippi contrails scene near River View. The show surpassed prior years with 253 exhibits and crowds estimated at 350 to 400.

Girl Scout Cadettes Elect Officers for Term

The Girl Scout Cadettes held a meeting on October 13 electing Patrol Leader Louann Bellich Assistant Patrol Leader Cindy Halfman treasurer Sherry McCrudden and secretary Rhonda Brown. They will meet biweekly on Mondays with the next gathering October 23 from 3:30 to 6:00 p.m. at Potters Road for a cookout. The group will provide babysitting at PTA meetings as a service project.
