Savanna WPA Worker Dies in Accident

Henry Francis Kosier, 53, longtime Savanna resident, died after being run over by heavy damp truck at Savanna Ordnance Depot. Working with PWA road crew, Kosier fell from the truck on unloading. Inquest held. survived by three sons, five daughters, mother, two brothers, a sister, and 14 grandchildren.

Low Bidders Named On Army Depot Projects

Bids opened at Savanna Ordnance depot last week showed Brooka Construction of Fort Wayne Indiana, Warner Construction of Chicago, and Manhattan Construction of Muskogee Oklahoma as low bidders on three projects. Brooks bid 43007.35 for two miles of concrete paving, Warner bid 66168.12 for about three miles of railroad track, Manhattan bid 264850 for two smokeless powder magazines and seven standard magazines. Final awards await review in Washington DC.

Collins Boys Indicted for Theft by U S

John Collins 17 and his 14 year old brother Clarence, both in custody for earlier crimes, were indicted in federal court at Freeport on charges of stealing 1158.21 from Lt LaMaster and a .41 caliber automatic weapon. bonds set at 5000 each. Payroll funds and gun were recovered by Carroll county authorities weeks earlier.

REA power line construction ready to start statewide

Program for Carroll County Teachers Institute Made Known

The annual Carroll county Teachers Institute will be held at Mt Carroll High School next Thursday October 26. Officials Say Error Fixed Two Weeks Ago

Carroll county officials question a Chicago attorney Ira Silbar who rushed to correct a stay of execution for John Collins. A miswritten order swapped it and is now corrected two weeks before the original Oct. 13 death sentence, with a Dec. 15 rescheduled execution date. Collins killed Lt. Paul LaMaster during a payroll holdup at the CCC camp near Mt. Carroll.

High winds imperil boats on Pool 13 and 18

Strong northwest winds last Thursday and Friday stirred up three to four foot waves on Pool 18 of the Mississippi River. Small boats and towboats faced trouble, with one towboat forced to tie up after failing to buck the waves. Motor and rowboats also struggled to traverse the pool amid dangerous conditions.

Savanna Man Loses Hand In Hunting Accident

Devon Richmond, 25, of Savanna, was hunting on the Adam Rath farm north of Savanna when his right hand was shot off. He was taken to Savanna hospital where doctors amputated at the elbow. J Lynch, Director of Conservation, warns that Illinois quail and pheasant season opens Nov 10 and reports of early hunting have reached the department.
