Sign up meetings for farmers and tenants who complied with the 1939 AAA program will be held in Carroll County on Oct 28 and Oct 30. Landlords and tenants must sign separate applications for payments tied to the 1984 acreage allotments and soil building practices, with all sessions open afternoon and evening. Local meetings include Chadwick Lanark Savann i Arg o Milledgeville Mt Carroll Shannon.
Seven women and one of the music department at Milledgeville High School have been chosen for the all star chorus. Village President Walter Byers announces Shannon will observe Thanksgiving on November 30 while Carroll county communities celebrate on November 23. The message specifies Shannon aligns its holiday date with the village’s proclamation.
A statewide survey by the Illinois Commerce Commission shows residential electric rates in western Carroll County are well above the Illinois average. Rates vary by provider, with Northwestern Illinois Utilities serving Chadwick, Thomson, Mt Curran, and Savanna at 75 kWh for 4.50 dollars, while Galena via Interstate Light and Power charges 3.59 dollars and Belvidere, Dixon, Freeport, Morrison, and Sterling via Northern Utilities at 3.53 dollars. Since Northwestern Winds Utilities took over, rates here have fallen several times and service has expanded to more customers each year, with more reductions hoped for as the customer base grows.
State Division of Unemployment Compensation announced in Carroll County the September unemployment payments totaling about 850 dollars to jobless workers. State Director Martin P. Durkin notes thousands of Illinois unemployed receive weekly checks ranging from seven to sixteen dollars based on prior earnings, with the average around eighteen dollars.
Mt Carroll school’s grid squad defeated Warren 27 14 in a U S Grant conference game. A light rain cleared before kickoff as Carroll’s substitutes played late, Warren fueled by 27 passes managed seven complete, while Carroll’s aerial attempt was picked off once. The Carroll County Tuberculosis association met in Mt. The group reviewed high school tuberculosis tests and X rays, and reported 274 dollars spent on the program. Sale of Christmas Seals will begin December 1.
Sheriff Ray Westfall and a state fire marshal from Rockford arrived Friday to investigate a fire at the Robert Haley residence in Lanark discovered about two o’clock Thursday morning. Firefighters rescued Ken Roth Bower from the building, he was treated at Freeport hospital for smoke inhalation. Leaves found at the blaze prompted state marshal and sheriff to join the inquiry. Mr Haley and his daughter June were away. Damage estimated at 300 dollars and covered by insurance.
Officials of the International Live Stock Exposition forecast a record entry for the Chicago show at the Stock Yards Dev. 28. B H Heide says more stockmen are inquiring and prize money will exceed 100000 across 30 breeds of cattle horses sheep and swine. Canadian livestock and international entries from Argentina and Australia mark the first South American presence. The event features a 7500 seat central coliseum within six acres of display space at the east entrance.
Seven Carroll county residents and four Whiteside county residents, including three women, were named to the petit jury for the upcoming term of United States District Court in Freeport. Jurors report November 6 to Judge Charles E. Woodward. Names listed include Arthur Deets, Chadwick. Elwood Gipe, Milledgeville. Harold Elites, Mt. Carroll. Vera Behr Wheelock. Mae Wilson Morrison. and others.
The Department of Welfare announces a statewide examination for the position of visitor in 101 downstate counties. Immediate appointments in about 30 counties may occur, with others tied to turnover of eligible lists. Apply on official forms by November 11. salaries from 960 to 1220 dollars yearly.
Four of five low bids on five Savanna Ord nance Depot construction projects were approved by the Washington based quartermaster general. Two projects should begin this week: deep well drilling by C W Warner Co and three miles of railroad track by Warner Construction Co. Two more may start next week: two miles of concrete road by Brooks Construction Co and two smokeless powder magazines plus seven standard ammunition magazines by Manhattan Construction Co. A fifth bid for 19 igloo type magazines by Midwest Construction Co was to be approved soon. Annabelle Howes of Savanna won a divorce from Charles R. Howes in adult court at Mt. Carroll on grounds including drunkenness and desertion.
Construction starts on 256 miles of line with Chicago contractor A B Schulman. Total federal funds reach 349000 including 244000 for lines and 76000 for a generating plant. 30000 grant adds to funds and wiring loans of 5000. A substation near Scales Mound will replace a Wisconsin plant. interim power from temporary hookups or a portable generator is planned.
Edward J. Barrett notes about 76,000 bushels of Carroll county corn stored in steel bins as government security for 1937 38 loans and about 97 000 bushels now with the Commodity Credit Corporation. Also 925 000 held in unclaimed deposits in 211 closed banks, with claims due within one year after final dissolution.
