Max Emery a 29 year old Savanna man died from injuries after a Friday night crash four miles north of Thomson. His car left Highway 80 near the Frank Brown home, rolled several times, and Emery, thrown from the vehicle, died at Savanna hospital after an inquest found accidental death. He leaves a widow Dorothy Bouvin and two children, plus his parents and sisters.
Crumpled fenders were the only damage after a minor collision Saturday between cars driven by Mrs. Quentin Holley of Mt. Carroll and Alfred Struve of Chicago. The accident happened at the junction of routes 73 and 64 in Mt. Carroll.
Mt Carroll coroner's jury rules death due to self inflicted gunshot, Norma Storch aged 20 died at the Tipton residence in Savanna area. The .38 revolver was found near the body and a shot was heard by her sister who discovered her in the morning. She had been living with her sister's family and worked in a Rockford beauty parlor. Funeral services held at her parents' home in Stetsonville. Surviving are her parents, six brothers and one sister.
Five purebred Guernseys owned by W G Warnock of Mt Carroll averaged 748 pounds of milk and 81.9 pounds of fat to lead Carroll county dairy herd improvement results. Other top producers include a 19-head Holstein herd led by Clarence Cooper of Thomson and several purebred Holstein entries. The county's 1938 corn crop is being stored in 18 foot diameter steel bins under federal loan programs, with construction at multiple farms and stores across Lanark Chadwick Thomson Milledgeville and nearby towns.
More than 40 pounds of butter fat was produced by 34 cows in association herds last month. Hail sales and high cows for the month are at the Stransdale farm No 1.
Ten of the best corn huskers in Carroll county line up at noon Tuesday October 16 in a field west of Milledgeville for an 80 minute corn husk battle to win the county title and a $10 cash prize. The winner may enter the state meet in Danville later this month. Prizes of 7.50 and 5 go to second and third places. Entries numbered seven by Tuesday noon with more expected. Officials include Naaman Diehl Milledgeville Farm Bureau starter and S O Crom in charge of weighing loads with local high school ag students aiding.
Farmers urged to join the October 24 rat control effort through the Farm Bureau. Red squill poison bait will be supplied via local distributors at 35 cents per package, about 100 baits each. Orders must specify quantity and distributor to govern distribution.
Carroll county will hold a one day county institute on Thursday October 26 at Mt Carroll High School with speakers from Purdue Chicago and state education officials. The district meeting follows Friday in Rockford. Topics include democracy school laws and radio classroom use.
The Savanna Ordnance Depot announced a Six Corps area drive to enlist 5500 men. Applications accepted from Oct 18 onward. Outstanding Carroll County 4 H club boys were named at a Mt. Carroll Farm Bureau meeting. Joseph Rath Paul Doty Savanna and Maurice Guenzler Harry Stengel Lanark named as all round club boys. Project champions included Swine Dairy Beef Sheep with several Lanark Savanna members earning medals from Chicago Producers' association.
Savanna and Chicago judge Franklin J. Stransky is courted to run in the April Republican primary. A Chicago Herald American report by A L Sloan says a coalition of Cook County and downstate leaders is urging his entry. Stransky, a Savanna resident, would be a controversial independent candidate backed by followers of former Gov Emerson and remnants of Gov Small’s organization. He has not committed, saying he will weigh angles and decide later.

Local authorities report a fatal auto accident Friday night north of Thomson near Savanna. Police say the incident remains under investigation with few details released.
Farmers urged to get orders in for poison rat bait to be distributed. Farm committees in four communities were elected Monday and Tuesday evenings to lead the 1940 AAA program. Readings show elections in Fair Haven Woodland York Rock Creek and Lima townships with various chairmen named and alternates selected.
Police and citizens searched hills north of Savanna for a man described as a wild figure in a tattered coat and burlap. Robert Anderson, 26, said the intruder entered his home at 9 30 p m, struck him with a club, and fled. His wife alerted neighbors, Dan Thulen, and officers, but no trace was found overnight.

William J Freeman, a Carroll county farmer, topped the hog trade at the Chicago Stock Yards on Monday of last week. His 53 head of 238 pound butchers sold at the day's top price $7.05 per cwt without sorting. The crossbred Poland China Hampshires were narrowed in April and fed a ration of corn oats and a commercial feed. He now has 110 young pigs five to six weeks old from 15 sows.
Five women serve on the federal grand jury drawn for United States District Court in Freeport. The panel lists 60 persons, with four women from Whiteside County and none from Carroll County. Names include Clara Bell Morrison and Mae Kustes among others.
