Adams Couple Observes 57th Anniversary in Ill and S Dakota
Mr and Mrs A J Adams of Watertown South Dakota marked their 57th wedding anniversary on Oct 16 while spending summer in Illinois with relatives. Former Illinois Senator Dieterich Dies After Heart Attack
William H. Dieterich, former U S senator from Illinois, died Saturday night in a Springfield hotel of a heart attack. Funeral services were held Tuesday in Beardstown with burial in Rushville. He served in the Senate from 1933 to 1939 and earlier as congressman at large, after a term in the Illinois legislature.

Savanna Coroner Rules Two Local Deaths Accidental
A coroner's jury in Savanna ruled both deaths accidental. Frank Haberman died of asphyxiation in a gas filled room behind his confectionery store. Oscar LaShelle perished from burns in a bed fire. Haberman was found by building owner Lindsay Trader after gas odor detection. LaShelle's body was found by James Marken while LaShelle was to report for work. Damages Sought in Damage Suit Against Kyle Turney
A civil suit filed in circuit court seeks damages of 5000 to 7500 dollars from Kyle Turney county farm superintendent. William French accuses Turney of assault in a Mt Carroll tavern on August 31 1940 causing injuries and medical costs. The county farm committee found no official action and French had been an inmate for years. Marriage licenses issued in Clinton Iowa to four couples including Balk Smith Salton Thulton Simpson Falesnik Brown Miller and others.

Ten contestants from eight townships entered the 1940 Carroll County cornhusking contest. Palmer Dauphin, the 1930 county champion, will attempt to defend his title despite rheumatism. The event on October 25 on the Harlan Diehl farm near Lanark offers cash prizes of 10, 7.5 and 5 dollars for first through third place.

Trapped Trucker Dies After Truck Plunges Into Slough
Carl Seba a 25 year old Brady transport driver was killed when his truck veered from the Savanna Sabula bridge pike into a slough trapping him in the cab. The wreck occurred about 1 am and his body was recovered around 9 am after rescue attempts. Seba had been en route from Mt Carroll to Waterloo Indiana with an 11 ton load of fence wire. His body was sent to Jefferson City Missouri for funeral services. Separately James McCue and Herbert Sigulus of Savanna were granted probation after a circuit court verdict of assault with a deadly weapon.
