The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture surveys over 40 potato varieties including red pink blue white russet and purple to see which catch buyers eye. All are edible though some are hardier than standard stock.
Carroll County's old age assistance payments for September totaled 6 566 to 411 recipients. Thirty eight cases closed, four by death and thirty four for other reasons, many due to a state policy on asset limits. Six new applications were received, nine disposed of in September with five grants and three denials.
A routine session of the board of supervisors yielded no major items for action. Members reviewed standard reports and approved minor housekeeping motions with no notable debates or decisions.
County board approves routine expenses and two resolutions. A second resolution grants Northwestern Illinois Utilities Company perpetual right of way to erect poles and wires on roads and highways under the board’s jurisdiction. The action includes entry rights to install and maintain lines and to trim trees, with safety considerations to avoid highway interference.

Carroll county residents are urged to register their names on the poll books before election day. Judges will be at polling places on Oct 18 from 9 a.m. to finish updating books and Nov 1 from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. to register voters. New residents and recent movers should ensure their names are added.

State police and deputies scoured Stephenson and Winnebago counties Friday and Saturday near Freeport and Rockford seeking two men believed to resemble bank messengers who fled Ottawa after a $60,000 payroll robbery. Authorities blocked roads but found no trace of the fugitives. Detectives speculated stolen Milledgeville license plates may have been used.
Delegates from ten communities meet in Mt Carroll to elect three members of the county farm committee and designate alternates and delegates for the coming year. Elections were held in each community last week with Salem and Mt Carroll townships announced later.

Project champions in Carroll county girls 4-H club work were chosen last week and most record books sent to state headquarters to compete for state honors with peers from other counties. Carroll Friday Edward Verburg was granted divorce from Ottilie Verburg for desertion.
C E Miner reports that since 1935 WPA projects in Carroll County have paid $201,972 to workers and $142,756 in sponsor funds by June 30, 1938. The effort supported relief replacement with work, boosted local trade, and funded major water mains and sidewalk upgrades in Savannah and Mt Carroll.
Ballots will feature only three columns of candidates and an amendment question. The design trims choices to streamline voting and reduce clutter, with party candidates organized in compact columns and the ballot presenting the amendment question clearly for voters.
Carroll county voters will see a smaller ballot on November 8 with three party columns Republicans Democrats and Prohibitionists, plus a state constitutional bank laws amendment and a separate yes or no question on the W H Thompson draft policy for Congress.
