Fair Haven ladies aid society met last Wednesday in Chadwick at Mrs. Maude Alexander home with co host Mrs. Amelia Spearman. The program included songs prayers devotions articles poems and readings by several members and a closing prayer. The Rev and Mrs E E Peacock and daughter of Clinton visited Fair Haven and Chadwick friends Friday.
Carroll county schools dismiss two days next week as teachers attend the annual county institute October 19 at Mt. Carroll high school. Speakers include Dr. Beryl D. Orris, Bert Levy, and Jane Shover. Friday October 20 the Northwestern division meeting takes place in Rockford with Stulkens, Fielding, Herrick and Stoddard among the speakers.

Sgt John Bittner 29 former Chadwick student wounded in action in Germany on Sept 19 reports a war department message to his mother Mrs Cora Bittner Mt Carroll. He said to have wounds in left arm and side while serving in a tank unit overseas a year. His brother Cpl Robert Bittner has arrived in France.
State Auditor Arthur C. Lueder reports September disbursements across two programs. Old age pensions in Illinois totaled 5,882,776 to 282 recipients in Carroll and 713 recipients in Whiteside. Aid to dependent children paid 672,279 supporting 47,962 Illinois children. Carroll pension payments reached 8,281 to 282 people while Whiteside County paid 21,218 to 713 recipients. In Carroll the ADC payments were 667 aiding 50 children, and in Whiteville ADC totaled 2,229 for 163 children.

Carroll county cattle from Denny Schreiner Lanark led the Tuesday Chicago Stock Yards sale. A 39 head drove Hereford beeves sold without sorting at 18.25 per cwt, averaging 1354 pounds per animal. This price marks the highest October cattle sale in seven years.

Mrs Myrtle Bull Mrs Eugene Bull Henry Young Sr and Ronald Bull visited Sunday at the Roy Hockman home near Mt Carroll.

Five Carroll county residents have been drawn for grand jury service for the October term at Freeport and three for petit jury duty. Whiteside county supplies three grand jurors and five petit jurors. Carroll grand jurors include Harlen Handel LaVonne Sucher William P B Kauck Garnet Keim and Ray Moll. Carroll petit jurors include Arthur Deets J W Wagner and Rhea Dahl. Whiteside petit jurors are Minnie Vogel John Davis William J Forth Myrtle Florence and Mrs Grace Ridd.
The Jo Carroll Electric cooperative plans 25 miles of rural power lines in Carroll and Jo Daviess counties once materials reach the area. Approved by Rural Electrification Administration loan examiners, the project will serve 225 new customers with 103 miles of line funded from unexpended RFA contracts.

Sergeant Blaine B Lohmeier was seriously wounded in action in France on Sept 26 according to a war department message to his parents He is the son of Mr and Mrs John Lohmeier 2710 1 2 N Third St Clinton He enlisted Sept 17 1943 trained at Camp Wolters Texas and has been overseas since April He attended school in Argonaut California and worked at the Sevanna ordnance plant before joining the armed forces
The United Lutheran Church in America holds its three year budget vote at Central Lutheran in Minneapolis from October 11 to 17. Delegates consider 7.5 million dollars, with three million for postwar global emergency needs, and discuss urging peace policy proposals and opposition to universal military conscription and conscription of two men.
Brother Carol Langston and his wife from Sciota Illinois visited the George and Herbert Ores home on George Street. Joe McGinnis of Savanna and Mr and Mrs Vaughn McGinnis and their baby were Sunday callers of Mrs Ella Stumphy. Mr and Mrs Charles Allison of Orangeville visited last Wednesday with the Stephen Switzer family.
Mrs Adda Tallman of Lanark died Thursday afternoon in the St Jean hotel following a paralytic stroke. Funeral held 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church. Burial in Lanark cemetery. Survived by two sons Ray Tallman and Fred Tallman and daughter Edna Ditteworth. Preceded by husband and daughter Effie Bloyer.
Mrs Cora Brady Longshore 75 of Mt Carroll died Sunday at St Francis hospital Freeport. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Frank funeral home Mt Carroll with burial at Oak Hill cemetery. Born December 6 1868 in Woodland township she was the daughter of Joseph Everhart and Ryan. She had lived in Freeport many years and is survived by a daughter Mrs W J Henderson of East St Louis.
Pfc. Henry J. Rath, 26, son of Mr. and Mrs. Julian H. Rath of Savanna area, was killed in action September 21 in Germany after a year overseas with a tank unit. Telegram from the war department gave no details. Born January 5, 1918, he attended local rural schools and Savanna Township High School. Surviving are his parents three brothers and two sisters.
The Carroll county farm machinery rationing committee issued permits to purchase new farm equipment from Oct. 2 to Oct. 7. Named purchasers include Frank Westendorf Lee E Shaver and Joe Schriner for corn pickers.
Mr and Mrs Rush Carroll traveled to Ovid Colorado on Saturday to attend funeral services for Ethan Carroll who died Friday morning. Neighbors and friends gathered at Mrs George Schmaling's home Saturday evening to celebrate her birthday with gifts cake and refreshments.
Four Carroll County farm youths participated in the Chicago Junior Market Hog Show and Sale at the Chicago Stock Yards on Sept. 28. Everett Rey Martz Loren Martz and David Lee Rahn of Lanark plus Frederick L Volkers of Milledgeville were among 121 exhibitors raising 570 hogs across three weight classes. Martz and Volkers placed 9th and 10th in the middleweight single barren class, while the sale saw hogs average 225 pounds at 27 cents per pound, headlined by a champion Chester White at 82 cents.

Carroll County Board of Supervisors met for October session. meeting delayed one day due to precinct voter registration. Nipe noted 99 absent voter ballots returned from armed forces, with 480 mailed to service members.
A Sunday blaze on Adam Voeckel’s farm six miles southwest of Chadwick destroyed a frame barn and hoghouse. About 19 tons of hay and straw, a calf, and two sets of harness were lost. Fire trucks from Chadwick and Mt. Carroll fought the flames. wind kept the house safe, but a nearby corncrib burned briefly. Loss estimated at 2600 to 4000 dollars, partially insured.
John Herbert Ryan a 45 year old Milwaukee railroad extra gang worker was killed instantly about 0 30 a m Wednesday Oct 4 when he was run over by an eastbound Milwaukee train about a mile and a half west of Kittredge An inquest in Lanark Frank funeral home returned a verdict of death by own action Testimony showed Ryan lay across the tracks with his head on one rail and legs across the other He had earlier been moved from the track when another train approached and was not seen afterward The body was buried in Lanark cemetery with no known relatives.
