Carroll county teachers institute October 19 program

Carroll county schools dismiss two days next week as teachers attend the annual county institute October 19 at Mt. Carroll high school. Speakers include Dr. Beryl D. Orris, Bert Levy, and Jane Shover. Friday October 20 the Northwestern division meeting takes place in Rockford with Stulkens, Fielding, Herrick and Stoddard among the speakers.

Sgt John Bittner 29 former Chadwick student wounded in action in Germany on Sept 19 reports a war department message to his mother Mrs Cora Bittner Mt Carroll. He said to have wounds in left arm and side while serving in a tank unit overseas a year. His brother Cpl Robert Bittner has arrived in France.

Illinois auditor cites state pension and aid payments

State Auditor Arthur C. Lueder reports September disbursements across two programs. Old age pensions in Illinois totaled 5,882,776 to 282 recipients in Carroll and 713 recipients in Whiteside. Aid to dependent children paid 672,279 supporting 47,962 Illinois children. Carroll pension payments reached 8,281 to 282 people while Whiteside County paid 21,218 to 713 recipients. In Carroll the ADC payments were 667 aiding 50 children, and in Whiteville ADC totaled 2,229 for 163 children.

Top Cattle Sale At Chicago Yards Sets October High

Carroll county cattle from Denny Schreiner Lanark led the Tuesday Chicago Stock Yards sale. A 39 head drove Hereford beeves sold without sorting at 18.25 per cwt, averaging 1354 pounds per animal. This price marks the highest October cattle sale in seven years.

Lanark Woman Mrs Adda Tallman Dies After Stroke

Mrs Adda Tallman of Lanark died Thursday afternoon in the St Jean hotel following a paralytic stroke. Funeral held 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Trinity Lutheran Church. Burial in Lanark cemetery. Survived by two sons Ray Tallman and Fred Tallman and daughter Edna Ditteworth. Preceded by husband and daughter Effie Bloyer.

Mrs Cora Brady Longshore Rites Held In Mt Carroll

Mrs Cora Brady Longshore 75 of Mt Carroll died Sunday at St Francis hospital Freeport. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Frank funeral home Mt Carroll with burial at Oak Hill cemetery. Born December 6 1868 in Woodland township she was the daughter of Joseph Everhart and Ryan. She had lived in Freeport many years and is survived by a daughter Mrs W J Henderson of East St Louis.

Savanna Youth Killed in Action Pfc Henry Rath is Dead

Pfc. Henry J. Rath, 26, son of Mr. and Mrs. Julian H. Rath of Savanna area, was killed in action September 21 in Germany after a year overseas with a tank unit. Telegram from the war department gave no details. Born January 5, 1918, he attended local rural schools and Savanna Township High School. Surviving are his parents three brothers and two sisters.

Hogs Shine at Chicago Junior Market Show with Carroll County youth

Four Carroll County farm youths participated in the Chicago Junior Market Hog Show and Sale at the Chicago Stock Yards on Sept. 28. Everett Rey Martz Loren Martz and David Lee Rahn of Lanark plus Frederick L Volkers of Milledgeville were among 121 exhibitors raising 570 hogs across three weight classes. Martz and Volkers placed 9th and 10th in the middleweight single barren class, while the sale saw hogs average 225 pounds at 27 cents per pound, headlined by a champion Chester White at 82 cents.

County Clerk W M Nipe reports a marriage license issued to James Belcher of Peceria and Jane Bradley of DeKalb. Carroll County Board of Supervisors met for October session. meeting delayed one day due to precinct voter registration. Nipe noted 99 absent voter ballots returned from armed forces, with 480 mailed to service members.

Fire destroys barn and hoghouse on Chadwick area farm

A Sunday blaze on Adam Voeckel’s farm six miles southwest of Chadwick destroyed a frame barn and hoghouse. About 19 tons of hay and straw, a calf, and two sets of harness were lost. Fire trucks from Chadwick and Mt. Carroll fought the flames. wind kept the house safe, but a nearby corncrib burned briefly. Loss estimated at 2600 to 4000 dollars, partially insured.

Section Worker Killed By Train Near Kittredge

John Herbert Ryan a 45 year old Milwaukee railroad extra gang worker was killed instantly about 0 30 a m Wednesday Oct 4 when he was run over by an eastbound Milwaukee train about a mile and a half west of Kittredge An inquest in Lanark Frank funeral home returned a verdict of death by own action Testimony showed Ryan lay across the tracks with his head on one rail and legs across the other He had earlier been moved from the track when another train approached and was not seen afterward The body was buried in Lanark cemetery with no known relatives.
