Babson argues buyer demand for small and mid sized houses is booming while land activity remains slow. He warns of a 1929 style stampede and eventual price drops after the war, urging cautious purchases and steps to save, while outlining a plan to acquire land and a house after hostilities end.
A Sunday picnic at Old Mill park Savanna honored Virgil Tomman who left Tuesday for military induction. Attendees included numerous family members and friends from Mt. Carroll Coleta Chicago and nearby towns.
Thomson briefs show Mrs. Carl Robinson Dean and Mrs. Pearl Gilson and Deanna visiting Lanark last Wednesday evening at the Irvin Merkle and Marvin Andrews homes. Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Decker and son and John Decker visited Sunday at the Louis Oostenryk home in Morrison.
An unexpected order lifts all wartime purchase controls on farm machinery except corn pickers. Marvin Jones, war food administrator, announced the change as the 1944 season nears completion. Dealers expect limited immediate relief due to tight supply and high demand, and say decisions must now be on a first come, first served basis.
Commissioner Joseph D. Nunan Jr announces a new Withholding Receipt system expected to simplify 1944 income tax filing for about 30 million employees. The form requires wages and tax withheld, allows joint or separate returns, and credits prepaid tax. Debits and deductions rules limit itemized claims to excess over 10 percent of income.
County Clerk W M Nipe sues for a marriage license for Raymond E Mellvain and Norma Christenson, both of Savanna. Robert Legel, 14, is held in the county jail awaiting grand jury action on a larceny charge. Legel, arrested last week, was bound over after a hearing before Justice W G Kent in Savanna. He is charged with stealing about 175 dollars from the M C Beck residence north of Thomson while the family was away. Suspicion arose when he tried to buy a car from a Thomson resident with 125 dollars in cash. the seller took the money and delayed delivery. Initial statements blamed a man in Mt Carroll, but later the funds were traced to the Park home.
John C Balk about 60, farmer on William Handel place south of Chadwick, was seriously hurt Friday noon when run over by a manure spreader. He suffered a left knee fracture, deep abdominal gash, and possible internal injuries. He was taken to Jane Lamb hospital in Clinton by Frank ambulance after the horses ran into a ditch and Balk tried to jump from the spreader.
Weekend guests in the Marion Olson home included Sgt. Marion Olson and T. Sgt Roy Gauvin with Pvt Geo Stubbs prior to field maneuvers for a month. Miss Catherine A Fritz and Wayne Smith wed in Mt Carroll Methodist parsonage with Rev. Countryman officiating. The couple, both from Mt Carroll, attended local schools and plan farming and banking careers respectively. Milledgeville pair Miss Mildred Yount and Robert E Gerdes married at St Paul Lutheran Sterling with Rev Doermann officiating. The newlyweds will reside in Milledgeville where Miss Yount has worked at Wahl Clipper Corp and Mr Gerdes has farm experience.
Announcement of the September 20 marriage of Corinne June Hess and Robert K. Myers in Port Orchard Washington. Hess is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Earl W Hess of Savanna. Myers an aviation ordnance man and Savanna native, stationed at Bremerton.
Miss Leota M. Noel of Springfield lrl and Joseph Cravatta of Springfield were married Wednesday September 20 in a Springfield Catholic church rectory. Cravatta, a Savanna native, works as a linotype operator. the bride has worked in a local beauty shop. Numerous local families attended the ceremony.
David P Wolford 72 longtime Carroll county resident died Friday at his Lanark home. Funeral at Frank Funeral Home Sunday at 2:30 pm with Rev. R OC Wedel. interment Shannon. Survivors include wife two children Edward Wolford Lanark and Mrs Emil Pabst Shannon one grandchild and one great grandchild. Nick Promenschenkel 82 died Tuesday at his Savanna area farm after seven months illness. Surviving are widow three sons Homer Raymond and Pvt Paul Promenchenkel overseas a daughter Mia Charles Gable near Savanna and two grandchildren.
Carroll county cattle and hogs led last week’s Chicago Stock Yards trade. Lanark’s Wolf and Klenz sent 58 head of 1158 pound steers at 18.00 per cwt, near the top. Burt Yokem and son of Carroll sold spring pigs at 11.75 per hundredweight, averaging 228 pounds for six month old, high quality stock.
Buford Bros Holsteins topped Carroll County Dairy Herd Improvement in September with 37.6 pounds fat and 1061 pounds milk across 28 cows. J C Bennett Brown Swiss trailed, then Harry Tallman Grade Holsteins and Guernseys. Oostie Buford cow led with 83.1 fat and 2207 milk. five cows sold to butcher.
Mr. and Mrs. Richard Badtke and family visit Clinton as Mrs Emerson Ringson hosts. Lyle Shannfeldt of Clinton will report to Chicago for army induction Monday. Mrs. Ralph Stearns spends weekend in Moline with sister Mrs. Willard Nelson. Ella Stumphy stays in Clinton with son Guy and family. Ida Each of Sabula visits Ella Stumphy and relatives. Ward Mercer and daughter of Sterling and Neil Tousley of Rock Falls visit Tousley Bros. in Clinton.
The sixth war loan drive will start November 20 and run through December 16. County war finance chairman Charles Stuart of Mt. Carroll was notified. The national goal totals 14 billion dollars with five billion for individuals and 2.5 billion for the E bond objective. The E bond accounting period runs November 1 to December 31.
Farmers must file farm reports with seed kind and clean seed pounds or dealer statements. An analysis report is needed for own seed or sales to others, obtainable from the state Seed Testing Laboratory in Springfield before Jan 1, 1945. Additional notes cover mixed seed recleaning, evidence attachments, and specific payment deadlines.
Mr and Mrs Ora C Lamb breeders of top Registered Polled Hereford cattle have been asked by Polled Hereford Association secretary to export two bulls and four heifers to South Africa via New York ports. The Lambs formerly of our village are recognized for their success and Albany is proud of them.
The National War Fund campaign runs Oct 9 to Nov 11 with a county quota over 15000 and a national goal of 1100. Bluffville has donated nearly 100 as the Carroll County committee organizes rural communities and distributes drive supplies for the emergency and relief work of 22 war agencies. A meeting in Mt. Carroll aimed to coordinate chairmen and featured USO director C E Alers and Savanna’s Al Reinehr, plus a film Memo For Joe.
Northern Illinois State Teachers College announces Homecoming activities for October 13 and 14. Events include an Alma Mater welcome, Shakespeare play by Alphia Psi Omega, alumni dance, an alumni business meeting, football at Glidden Field Elmhurst, a service honorees recognition, a McMurry Alumni gathering, open house, and a photos display of servicemen and women. The Northern News weekly will publish a special issue with hundreds of servicemen photos.
Boy Scouts will run their monthly waste paper collection on Saturday October 7. Place bundled scrap paper where it can be picked up during their rounds.
