Private funeral for Lt Col George W. Graham former Savanna Ordnance Depot commander was held at Fuller funeral home Savanna. Officiating pastor Rev H Foster Whitney the Episcopal church. Burial in Champaign. Died of a heart attack in Lanar’s apartment early Thursday. Born January 26 1832 in Filthian Illinois son of George W Graham and Julia S Dunn Graham. Commissioned 1917 served in ordnance officer reserve corps promoted major 1919 and 1920 later major again and Lt Col August 1 1935 retired August 11 1935. Survived by widow Mrs Gen J W Graham Pasadena California son George W Graham Jr Mt Carroll Texas daughter Mrs Theodore Colehour Mt Carroll stepdaughter and four grandchildren. Clyde Bowman Mt Carroll pleaded guilty vagrancy sentenced 90 days.
The old Pleasant Valley mill near Mt Carroll, long a county landmark, was dismantled by Adam Fulrath and Joe Furubwagh using timbers from the mill to build a double garage and woodshed at the Fulrath home. The mill, built over six decades, ran by water power and faced past cyclones and repairs.
About 15 people joined a soil and water conservation tour of three Carroll County farms on Wednesday. The Olivet Heisler, Carroll County Farm, and Ralph Blake properties showcased contour farming, terracing, lime and phosphate use, and erosion control, with yields and fertility improvements highlighted by participants and soil conservation staff.
Relief allocation for Carroll county for October is $50 per report by the IERG, lowest locally besides Lee which receives none. Other counties listed include Jo Daviess $1,867 Whiteside $455 Stephenson $6,267 and Ogle $1,531. IBRC expects home relief caseload to drop from 180,032 in September to 177,771 in October, with only 74,012 downstate counties anticipated to receive home relief.
A series of five community meetings to elect community committeemen and discuss the 1940 farm program is planned in Carroll county. Sessions begin Monday at 7 30 pm with two meetings that day and one each evening through Friday. Eligible voters include farm participants or those agreeing to cooperate in 1940, with one vote per member and no proxy voting.
John Collins a 17 year old Chicago Negro convicted July 12 of Lt Paul La Master murder Mt Carroll CCC camp commander received a two month reprieve from execution. Circuit Judge Harry E Wheat granted stay to allow appeal to state Supreme Court. Original date Oct 18 page now moved to Dec 13 with possible further delay if Supreme Court acts. Collins ill with influenza after imprisonment but recovered per officials.
Savanna and Stockton high school grid squads played to a scoreless tie on Friday night at Weidman field. Stockton dominated territory and yardage but failed to mount a serious scoring threat. George Perry of Thomson pleaded guilty Friday in county court to driving while intoxicated and received 90 days at Vandalia state penal farm with a one year license revocation. Perry was arrested Thursday night near Thonwen.
Nine deaths in automobile accidents occurred in six northwestern Illinois counties in September, bringing the year total to 34. Carroll and Jo Daviess had no fatal Augusts, Whiteside and Lee had three each, Ogle one, and Stephenson two, with nine deaths by September for the nine months.
September checks went to 455 recipients totaling 7900 dollars, up six from August. Four new applications were approved, four from previously denied, seven cases reviewed, seven awards granted, and two cases closed one by death and one by transfer.

Carroll county entrants dominated the Freeport Horse Show held Sunday at Taylor Park with multiple wins across 14 classes. Winners included Mary K. Holt on Argyle Prince in class 4 and Margaret Fritz riding Rex in class 2, with trophies, ribbons and cash prizes awarded.
Friends of Mr and Mrs Kenneth Pessman held a charivari Thursday night following their wedding at the home of Mrs Alice Bush. The group later entertained the couple at an ice cream supper Wednesday at Mrs Bush's home.
Cecile Williams took third and fourth grade pupils from Mission Ridge school to Mt Carroll on Monday night to see the movie The Wizard of Oz. Mrs Carl Zugschwerdt accompanied the group on the outing.
A county wide corn husking contest will be held Tuesday Oct 17 at the Henry P Rahn farm two miles west of Milledgeville. Ten entrants will compete for 80 minutes starting at noon with wagons provided. Final scores weigh loads after reductions for cleanings. Ten county winners with top scores advance to the state contest later this month. If weather delays occur the event may shift to Oct 20.
Paul S Wallace 44 formerly of Savanna died last Thursday at his Denver home after a long illness. Born in Henry Indiana he grew up in Savanna and graduated from Savanna High School. He served in the US Army with the 13th Railway Engineers in France 1917 to 1919, saw action in the Argonne, and later lived in Los Angeles before moving to Denver nine years ago for health reasons. Survived by his parents one daughter and a sister.
Marion Lee 31 of Milledgeville suffered eye injuries in Chicago Monday while mounting a stock truck tire. A dual rear wheel was lost before reaching the yards. while Lee prepared to mount it, the other tire blew out, throwing dirt and gravel into his eyes. Doctors removed the dirt at Home hospital Sterling. Tuesday his condition was reported good and vision expected to be unaffected.
