A good crowd attended the Grand Opening last Saturday with free coffee and doughnuts served by local firefighters. Lions Club plans to purchase new furniture for the station soon. Also noted are sports updates on the Yankees leading 3 to 2, and several local happenings from fishing to a band, a Twist contest, and community remodeling projects.
Mrs Helen ONeal spends week in Chicago with Mr and Mrs Melvin Brocious. She will visit Avon Ohio with sister and brother in law Herschel and family. Picklums with daughter and son in Davenport. Willie Leopold weekend guests of Wayne Wright in Marian Iowa. Mrs Jack Reynolds and daughter visit Charlotte Iowa relatives and friends. Frank Graves in Stockton Monday. Donald McBride and Dale Morrison join Wesley Sack for Sunday dinner. Louis Schreiner Clinton weekend at cottage. Sack and Picklum hosts and visitors in evening.
Thomson News notes Mr and Mrs Kenneth Kem mer and Coyle Morrison with Mr and Mrs Ben Stage visited last Sunday with Mr and Mrs Paul Stage at Rockford. Mrs Virl Johnson and her mother Mrs Ella Taylor returned Sunday from Western Grove Arkansas after a week with relatives. Mr and Mrs Clarence Sweets of Garden Plain were Wednesday visitors in the N D French home.
Fragmented minutes describe Thomson District 174 special session and regular meeting proceedings. Motions on secretary contract, overtime reimbursement, invalid payment, architectural services, district bills, and new filing purchase are recorded with roll calls and adjournment at midnight.
Marvin Stiles and Carroll Dimmick of Thomson performed the carpenter work for the new Thomson fire station. Goral Brothers Roofing Company of Dixon installed the built up roof. The omission of these names from last week’s Thomson Review story is acknowledged and apologized for.
Ely Cochran reports a gasoline explosion that destroyed a business block in Leadville a historic mining town. The Simmons Hotel and the Stapleton Chevrolet Co. were razed. Two men were killed and nine injured in the disaster.
Mrs Paul Heusinkveld and Mrs Eugene Murray stayed in Western Springs Illinois with Mr and Mrs C T Heusinkveld Friday night and Saturday. Paul W Kitt and daughters visited Mrs Gertrude Smith at Dubach-Thomas Nursing Home Freeport. John H Buike Ma and Phyllis visited Mr and Mrs Rinkie Lantiga Fulton. Norman Millard Chadwick visited Mr and Mrs Ben Stage. Paul James Green and family visited Mr and Mrs Geradus Vogel Fulton. Charles Hogg called on Mr and Mrs Ben Stage. Ed Samuelson Moline and Hazel Whitney Davenport visited Riverview residents.
U S Senator Everett Dirksen and Congressman John B Anderson will speak next Tuesday October 16 at Meeker's in Savanna at a noon luncheon. Public invited. Reservations should be made through Republican precinct committee man.
The menu lists daily offerings for October 15 through 18. It includes Wieners with Kraut and mashed potatoes on Monday, Goulash and spinach on Tuesday, Chicken A La King with rice on Wednesday, and Sloppy Joe sandwiches with corn on Thursday, each served with bread, milk, and fruit or dessert as indicated.
The Churches Work Community lists Baptist and Methodist services and Sunday schools with times at Thomson Argo Fay Hickory Grove and other locales. Catholic services are noted for Fulton and St John’s Savanna with multiple masses.

Charles Geerts of Fulton visited the Prins family in Clinton while Mrs Ernest Rathje stayed with Elva Connor. Pfc Larry Grim left for Fort Sill Oklahoma after a week’s leave with his parents Claude and Mrs Grim. Leslie Grim and family with Nancy Finn of Clinton fed Sunday dinner at Grim home. Francis Toepfer of Tremont Illinois visits his sister and brother-in-law Robert Bristol and family. Gertie Kindle of Sterling visited her son-in-law and daughter John Sloan and family. Fay Ashby and family joined Ervin Stuart and family of Morrison for Sunday supper.
Mrs. Harry Gaar expresses gratitude to all who sent cards gifts flowers and prayers during her hospital stay and thanks friends and neighbors for meals after returning home. God bless you all.
Friends and relatives of Frances Hemmer thank everyone for letters cards gifts and prayers. She remains very ill in the hospital in Stendal Indiana. Ima Carlisle signs the note dated 10 11.
Mr and Mrs Harold Daehler of Thomson announce the engagement and approaching marriage of their daughter Mary Ann to Lester J Elder, son of Mr and Mrs Joseph Elder of Moline. The wedding is set for October 27 at St Marys Catholic Church in Moline at 2 p m. Mary Ann is a Thomson High School graduate and Peter Pan Bakery employee. Lester also graduates from Alleman High School and is employed by Peter Pan Bakery Davenport.
About 200 people attended the open house last Saturday for Thomson’s new fire station held from 10 AM to 6 PM. Free coffee and doughnuts were offered by officers of the Thomson Fire Protection District. The district commends the new building for improving the appearance of Thomson’s Main Street.
James Keller, a Chicago Daily Newspaper boy, reports losing a money pouch in the west end of town recently. He asks that anyone who finds it notify him as soon as possible.
All girls who want to join Girl Scouts or Brownies are asked to attend at the school cafeteria Monday afternoon October 15 at 3 45 p m with their mothers. If you cannot attend contact leaders Mrs Merle Cate or Mrs Robert Falls. Girl Scouts must be 10 years old or in 5th grade. Brownies must be at least 7 or in 2nd grade.
The Thomson State Bank will be closed all day Friday. A local observance named Columbus Day is noted. No banking services will be available for customers that day.
The York Township Library announces new titles including A Study of Communism by J Edgar Hoover, Nine Saturdays Make a Year by Dave Camerer, and A Shade of Difference by Allen Drury. Hours are Wednesday 6 to 8 pm and Friday 2 to 5 pm.
In Puerto Rico Mr and Mrs William Hamm have learned their son Private First Class Francis Hamm of the U S Army is now stationed in Puerto Rico.
Mr and Mrs Marvin Baker and family from Clinton were evening visitors of Mr and Mrs Jake Baker and family, sharing a social gathering and greeting relatives.
Mr and Mrs Robert L Hardin of Little Rock announce the engagement of their daughter Roberta Louise to William H Feddersen son of Mr and Mrs Harold E Fedder sen of Thomson Illinois Roberta a 1962 Hendrix College graduate taught third grade at Surfside Elementary Satellite Beach Florida William a 1962 University of Illinois graduate taught sixth grade math and science at Surfside He is past president of the Student Illinois Education Association The wedding is set for November 22 at Trinity Presbyterian Church Satellite Beach.
Springfield Ill Oct 9 an extra eight to ten blinds will be available to duck hunters on Potter's Marsh in Navigation Pool 13 Mississippi River Carroll County Illinois Department of Conservation said. Blinds will be assigned by a 5 AM drawing at a check station and hunters must present licenses. Ident cards will be issued at check station before hunting and licenses retrieved after. Data on duck species bagged hunter success and area use will guide future Mississippi River management improvements.
Sunday dinner guests at the home of Mr and Mrs Albert Prins and family included Kenneth Ven Huizen and daughter Leslie Prins and son and Jan Faber and daughters from Hamp shire Illinois. They visited until Saturday with her son-in-law Merle Prins and family. Additional visits featured Mrs Dean Rathje and Steven Savanna and Mrs Ernest Rathje with Mrs Urban Meier Bellevue Iowa. Jack Ferris and daughter of Savanna joined Friday evening at Atherton home. Ralph Townsend Green Rock and family visited Merle Atherton Sr and Dolly Atherton Sunday evening. Merle Bielema and children visited Henry Bielema. Clarence Bolhous attended an insurance meeting Tuesday at the Faust Hotel Rockford.
Mr and Mrs Vernon Workman of Milledgeville welcomed a daughter Jerri Lynn born Sunday Oct 7 at Morrison hospital weight 8 lbs 11 ozs paternal grandparents are Mr and Mrs Louis Workman of Thomson. Mr and Mrs Jake Englekens of Fulton, formerly Thomson, welcomed a son born Tuesday Oct 9 at Savanna hospital weight 8 lbs 2 ozs.
The October meeting featured a fall fashion show with clothes from Lou Marge Shop Clinton and jewelry by Sarah Coventry. Members modeled the latest fashions as Terry Lee Kness narrated, with 25 members present plus guests. The club plans donations for a community Halloween party and parade and prepares for the Carroll County Woman's Club fall conference in Thomson on October 9.

American Legion Auxiliary holds monthly meeting Oct 15 at the Legion hall.
The second meeting of the Thomson F H A chapter held October 4, 1962 began with roll call and was chaired by F H A president Vera Hickey. After business, entertainment was provided by Marcia Melton Merrie Jo Sipper Jane McGinnis and Susan Spencer. Connie Schmitt served as reporter.
Thomson FFA chapter held a meeting at Thomson High School with the Green Hands initiation. Attendees for the national convention were Larry Hook, Walter Holland, Duane St. Ores, Harlan Hoff, Burton Prins, and the advisor, with basketball listed as the evening recreation.
Miss Jeanne Houzenga was honored at a bridal shower Friday evening at Mrs. Arnold Sikkema’s home. Prizes went to Mrs. Lawrence Beck, Mrs. Lyle Williams, Ardella Houzenga, Mrs. Charles Cravatta, and Mrs. Gilbert Robertson. Fifteen guests from Savanna, Chadwick, Fulton, and Thomson attended. gifts were given and refreshments served. Miss Houzenga will wed Robert Williams of Thomson on November 9.
The Ruth Circle of the Thomson Methodist WSCS will hold a bake sale at Starr's Cafe starting Saturday morning October 13 at 10 o clock. Members are asked to bring homemade goods as early as possible.
Mr and Mrs Roy Heitman visited Mrs Edith Robison at the Caroline Mark home in Mt Carroll last Sunday evening and found her in quieter health. Mr and Mrs Myles Haas and family joined Mr and Mrs Gene Marken and family for Sunday evening supper.
Mrs. Marvin Holesinger of Thomson chaired the Milledgeville fall PTA conference at the Methodist church. Key points included a progress report on county special education, Dr. Carl O D Stewart of Albany speaking on Cuba experiences, round table discussions on parent education, and a nominating committee for next year. Attendees from Thomson included Mrs. Merle Cate and Mrs. John Sour.
The sick list includes Mrs. Willard Tichler of Morrison who is critically ill at Morrison General Hospital. N D French entered Mercy Hospital Clinton as a medical patient. Harold Melendy returned home after cataract removal in Marshalltown Iowa. Dick Stagg broke a bone in his right wrist last Sunday. Dale Holesinger, son of Mr and Mrs Marvin Holesinger, remains a medical patient at Savanna Hospital. Mrs Albert Lynch went home after a three week medical stay at Jane Lamb Hospital Clinga. Deborah Falls, daughter of Mr and Mrs Richard Falls, was a surgical patient at Savanna Hospital last week and has been dismissed.
