Grand Opening of new fire station draws crowd

A good crowd attended the Grand Opening last Saturday with free coffee and doughnuts served by local firefighters. Lions Club plans to purchase new furniture for the station soon. Also noted are sports updates on the Yankees leading 3 to 2, and several local happenings from fishing to a band, a Twist contest, and community remodeling projects.

Fire wipes out block in historic Leadville Colorado

Ely Cochran reports a gasoline explosion that destroyed a business block in Leadville a historic mining town. The Simmons Hotel and the Stapleton Chevrolet Co. were razed. Two men were killed and nine injured in the disaster.

Open House Draws 200 at Thomson’s New Fire Station

About 200 people attended the open house last Saturday for Thomson’s new fire station held from 10 AM to 6 PM. Free coffee and doughnuts were offered by officers of the Thomson Fire Protection District. The district commends the new building for improving the appearance of Thomson’s Main Street.

More blinds announced for Potter’s Marsh duck hunting

Springfield Ill Oct 9 an extra eight to ten blinds will be available to duck hunters on Potter's Marsh in Navigation Pool 13 Mississippi River Carroll County Illinois Department of Conservation said. Blinds will be assigned by a 5 AM drawing at a check station and hunters must present licenses. Ident cards will be issued at check station before hunting and licenses retrieved after. Data on duck species bagged hunter success and area use will guide future Mississippi River management improvements.
